Hello Ali, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. We do not recommend using our water-based Cabothane Clear in this way. Our Cabothane Clear water or oil based is specifically formulated for bare or stained interior timber surfaces, only. You may want to look at something like the Duramax Terracotta Primer & Sealer spray pack.

Does Cabot Deck & Exterior Stain Oil Based treatment wash after the 24/48 drying period. My deck has a used area underneath and I do not want staining later on the pavers underneath.
Hello David, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. Our Deck and Exterior Stain Oil Based will not wash off of pavers once dry, as it is a penetrative product it will cause staining to the pavers too. We highly recommend the use of drop sheets under your decking if you use this area and be sure to do so when you are using our New Timber Prep and Deck Clean too.

I used an exterior oil-based stain to cover an outdoor wood table. Do I need to put a finish or varnish on top of the stain before proceeding to use as a table?
Hello there Rachael D, Thank you for your important question via Product Review. There is no need to apply a protective clear coat over the specifically formulated durable Cabot’s Deck & Exterior Stain finish, water or oil based by two coats. The Deck & Exterior Stain is a highly durable penetrating stain that also dries to a water repellent barrier aiding protection against mould and minimizing surface marking.
For this or any future timber projects, feel free to give our Cabot’s Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm AEST.

Sorry but I have no experience with the Cabots OIL based stain, only Cabots WATER based stain.
Can I change colour over existing oil based cabolt stain?
I have no experience with oil based Cabots however I would not have anything to do with any Cabots products ever again.
Hello Harald, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. You can absolutely change the colour of your currently coated timber by coating over it, but there are a few variables. Firstly, be sure that you are using the same product as last time, just a different colour. Secondly, be sure to clean your timber with Cabot’s Deck Clean as per label instructions to remove water resistance before coating. Thirdly, if you applied the first colour only recently, be sure to allow the current stain 14 days to completely cure before applying a new colour over the top.
Please bear in mind that as our stains are semi-transparent, you will have the old colour still show through underneath so be sure to test your new colour first in a small hidden area to be sure you are 100% happy before committing to the whole expanse.

I've re painted my decking timber using the same oil based Cabots Deck and exterior paint. the first coat has dried with a glossy finish and the second coat won't stick to it? It separates and leaves a streaky finish. I've never had this problem when using the same product on previous occasions. What's going on???
Maybe you have tried to put water based over oil based stain [paint]? I used water based. I would never ever again buy a Cabots product given my experience, water or oil based.
No, it was definitely oil based over oil based. Three tins of the supposedly same colour and they're all different shades. No idea what's going on?
Hello Mark Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review with your query. Very sorry to know of your unhappy result via the Cabot’s Deck and Exterior Oil Based. It’s very unusual to know of your two coats of product displaying different sheen levels, and adhesion issues.
In order to understand far more detail about the specifics of your project, we would need to ask you a few questions so as to find potential reason and more importantly a solution

Hi, Our deck is about 4 years old. (We only just bought the house). I understand if the current coating is oil based I should use oil again - however how can I be sure. I read about the test with Metho on a rag where if rag turns deck colour its water based - is this right?
Hi Steve. I cannot comment on an oil based Cabots product but I re-iterate the waterbased product is 'not fit for purpose' which is a legal term. Probably the oil based product is substandard but I am only suggesting that based on my experience with the water based 'stain' which is not a stain.
Hi Steve, Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review with your query. You are correct, the best way to test if a coating is water or oil-based is to use a clean rag with some Methylated Spirits on a clean hidden area of the deck. If the colour lifts it is water-based, if not it is oil-based. Be sure to use Metho and not Turps.
Once you know what kind of coating is currently there, you can begin prepping the deck with Cabot’s Deck Clean, as per label instructions. Once the deck is clean and dry you can begin coating with the appropriate stain. Do not mix water and oil as they are not compatible.

I’m having our previously water based decking finish on our meranti deck professionally sanded back to bare clean boards. Want to use an oil based stain on the pale meranti this time. Don’t want too dark a finish so considering 1 -2 coats of oil based deck stain depending on colour then finishing with 1 coat of natural decking oil or some other product. What do you suggest?
Hi Lyndalls 1, Thank you for reaching out to us at Cabot’s via Product Review with your query. We do not recommend this process as decking oils and stains are not compatible. Once you have removed the previous coating, you will need to wash the deck with Cabot’s Deck Clean to remove any possible contaminants and prepare the timber for coating. You can then coat with 2 coats of either a decking oil, such as Cabot’s Natural Decking Oil, or a stain such as our Deck and Exterior Stain. Do not mix these two products.
In order to be sure you are happy with your chosen colour, we recommend testing a sample on an offcut or a small clean hidden area. Please use 2 coats to be sure you are happy with the finished look before committing to the whole expanse.

My deck was done 12. months ago with Cabot oil based exterior stain. Can I put Cabot water based decking stain over the top?
Hello there Mary C, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. That's a great question and the good news is - Yes, you can apply the Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain water based over your current 12month old oil based deck stain. You will first need to give the current oil based surface a light even sanding over the expanse, using an 80 grit sanding pad with extension pole for easier process. Then pressure hose the surface thoroughly and while the timber is wet, apply the Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions. Once the Deck Clean has been applied and rinsed off thoroughly and deck is nice and dry, you can begin your water based Deck & Exterior Stain application in colour of choice by two coats. Please be sure to first apply a small stain colour sample pot by two coats to a hidden, clean dry section of the deck, just to make sure you're happy with the dry colour result before committing to the expanse.

I have used Cabot's Deck and Exterior Stain Oil Based on a new garden bed and bench made of treated pine sleepers, but thought I was using a water based product and so applied a second coat after only 4 hours of drying. Is that going to be a problem? Should I put another coat over the top once it is completely dry?
Hi there Paul, Thank you for reaching out to Cabot's via Product Review. This shouldn't be too much of an issue depending on the timber porosity ,timber surface preparation and especially how heavy you loaded up the coating. I would suggest letting the current second coat of the Deck & Exterior Stain oil based dry thoroughly for 18 hours or so,and assess the dry stain colour finish to see if you wish to strengthen the colour depth or leave it. Generally, two coats of a stain is enough to achieve a durable UV blocking finish. If you do wish to achieve more colour strength, you need to make sure the dry coating is dust free by dry brushing or vacuuming away carefully, and wipe down lightly with a clean lint free cloth, slightly damp with mineral turpentine. Then you can choose to apply a final third coat of the Deck & Exterior Stain oil based if you wish but please note -You will achieve more of an opaque,deeper/richer colour result,by doing so. It's best to apply a test coat first to small section of clean dry coated area , just to make sure you're happy with the final dry colour result, before committing to the expanse.

I have used Cabot oil stain can I used regular stain over it?
Hi Pattie, Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us via Product Review with your enquiry. It is a little difficult for us to advise you without being able to ask a few more questions, as the answer depends on what you mean by ‘regular stain’. If you are referring to another oil based stain then this may be possible depending on the preparation process and your desired finish. We would love to discuss this with you, so please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm AEST. I recently sanded and oiled my treated pine deck. I actually used integrain natural timber oil. The deck does not look good, the timber is super yellow and even though it cured for 10 days before it rained it looks even worse with a coat of rain on it.
I think the only thing I can do is paint it with cabots decking paint. However am I going to have to sand it considering it is freshly oiled? I literally sanded it prior to oiling so I don’t think I have the energy to do it again. Help!
Hello Clair, Thank you for taking the time to contact us at Cabot's Australia via Product Review. I'm afraid to change a freshly coated unwanted colour finish over your deck, it would best sanded back to a nice bare timber finish again, and then wash/scrubbed down with the Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions. You can reduce the water resistance of a new dry deck coating by just washing/scrubbing down with the Cabot's Deck Clean two-three times but it will still have the previous colour over the surface area, which will affect the new stain colour finish result. So it's highly recommended to view a few sample pot colour options before committing to the area first.

We have an oil based stain on our deck- it looks pretty old. Am I able to prime the deck instead of sanding it? I want to be able to paint the deck in a monument colour.
Hello there Ldavis, Thank you for reaching out to us here at Cabot's via Product Review. If you wish to paint your stain coated deck with the durable Cabot's Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint, you can do so by first washing/scrubbing down your deck using the Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions. Once rinsed, clean and dry, you can then apply two - three coats of the self-priming Cabot's Timbercolour Deck & Exterior Paint in the Colorbond Monument colour. Please be sure any loose surface materials are scraped off and any highly textured/raised timber grain is sanded off evenly with a 120 grit sandpaper, before washing down the deck expanse.

After cleaning our deck today, I painted it with Cabot's oil based decking oil. It was originally painted with water based decking oil about 4 years ago. It is now over 6 hours since, and the surface is still sticky (not drying). Have I made a mistake painting over water based oil, with oil based oil? If so, how do I fix this?
Hello Barb, Thank you for reaching out to us here at Cabot's. At times a new deck coating may take up to 7 days or so to dry completely, due to surface variables, application load up and surface/air temperature at the time of application. We suggest waiting 7 days to give the coating the extra time to dry. If after that 7 day period your deck coating is still a little sticky to the touch - You can rectify this by hosing down the deck expanse and applying the Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions. Once the Deck Clean has been rinsed off clean and dry - You can assess the surface and apply one last finish coat over the deck. This should rectify the sticky surface.
Please note - A quality penetrating oil like the Natural Decking oil requires a timber surface to be dry, clean and absorbent. So you need to first check that the well cleaned and dry deck surface is absorbing water by applying the water bead test as follows - Sprinkle droplets of water over the dry clean timber’s surface. If the water beads on the surface of the timber, the timber is not quite ready for a new coating, further sanding/stripping is required. If the water droplets readily soak into the surface of the timber in under 15 seconds, this is an indication that the timber is ready for the new coating.

i have began sanding lightly my doors and window ledges replacing varnish with decking oil its ok but patchy and marks in places should i continue or stripp it more heavily with sander to then oil
Hi, I have sanded my deck and applied 2 coats of cabots oil , natural. Can I put a gloss coat on top ?
We're not sure if our house has an oil or water-based stain. It's become quite faded in exposed areas and needs re-staining. Assuming we can't determine whether the existing stain is oil or water-based, are we better to choose one or the other for re-staining?
Hello there Matt, You can check if an old coating of paint or stain is a water or oil based, by applying some methylated spirits onto a clean rag and wipe/rub over a small section of your wall, for about ten seconds or so. If the cloth is stained with the wall colour, it is water-based. You can certainly use one of the durable water or oil based Cabot's exterior or interior stain options, but just depends on the type of application needs you have there. Both oil and water based Cabot's stain coatings will achieve excellent results by two - three coats as per label instructions, with the oil based needing far more time between coats and overall curing times.
Always be sure to apply a small colour test over a hidden section of an area first, just to make sure you're happy with a stain, paint or oil colour result before committing to an expanse.
If you need any further assistance on this or any up-coming projects, please give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm AEST.

Can I put an oil based Aussie oil on top of a water based Aussie oil?
Hello there Pam, If that's an exterior timber area you have coated there in the water based Cabot's Aquadeck or Deck & Exterior Stain - You can apply the Australian made, oil based Cabot's Natural Decking Oil or oil based Deck & Exterior Stain over it,but you will first need to reduce the water based oil coating water resistance right down before doing so. You can do this by firstly - Sanding the water coating down to a nice even smooth finish and then hose down with pressure, scrub over the wetted down surface with Cabot's Deck Clean as per label instructions, using the Cabot's Deck Prep bristle brush and pole handle.
Water bead test - Once all is rinsed off clean and dry, you need to test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the dry clean timber. If the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot's Deck Clean. If the water is absorbed into the timber, it is ready for coating. For a more transparent look, sand the timber back to bare before coating and apply the wash down process outlined.

We have a deck previously coated in marine varnish.
The varnish is not in good state and where the deck gets wet the wood desperately needs treatment. Can I use a decking oil over the varnish to treat the deck?
Hi Helen, Thank you for reaching out to Cabot's, we always recommend to sand back the timber before applying any new product, this way you will achieve greater results and you will be removing any old coating.
