Feast Watson Decking Oil Questions & Answers
VerifiedHi, I have applied two coats of natural wet look decking oil to my new Blackbutt deck. It's not at all the colour I would like. I thought natural would mean it stayed looking natural but it now looks almost orange. How do I remove it and get the original timber look please.
I have applied two coats of Feast Watson Merbau Decking oil after 12 hours it is still tacky on top. What am I doing wrong. Thanks.
Hi There Frank and lorraine. firstly was the weather above 10 degrees and did you allow enough time between coats and was the timber dry and allowed to weather naturally and did you do the initial prep work ie:- leach resins out of the timber then allow to dry. Is the surface milky.
If the timber is not dry and you apply an oil based product it will remain sticky until all the moisture dries through the bottom of the timber as it wont evaporate through the oil applied.
You can buy products/deck wash that fast track this procedure but its always better to leach the resins out naturally. do not despair it will eventually dry, the timing weather wise is the secret and attention must be paid to the prep work. This is really important.
You wont get much help from the manufacturer as the generally don give a hoots other than selling you the product.
Agree with Spanner...and suggest that a little judicious heat applied by hair dryer or heat gun should assist drying.
Hello there Frank and Lorraine, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. There are a number of potential reasons for a fresh deck coating resulting in a tacky/sticky finish. Some of the more common reasons are: • The porosity and oil content of the timber can significantly affect drying times. • Humidity, surface and air temperature on application. • Not stirring the product thoroughly enough to achieve a complete formulation. • Insufficient/incorrect deck wash down process. • Heavy flood coated application over the area. • Deck board cupping in sections that causes pooling of the coat.
The good news is - The deck coating will certainly dry but may take longer than quoted on the label. If the coating is still a little tacky after 7 days or so - Give it a light wash down with the Feast Watson Woodclean dilution as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry, the tacky surface should be no more. We recommend applying one final well-stirred, even coat of your Feast Watson decking oil, to finish.

I have put a first coat of FW oil base stain black japan on my decking. The rain has settled in for the next few days. It is a covered area so can i continue whilst the weather is wet. Thankyou
How can I change the orange colour of my deck? I used Feast Watson (matt) decking oil - Jarrah colour. Can I oil over with a different colour without sanding?
My question is to Feast Watson please. We have a Spotted Gum deck, recently professionally sanded. Our sander recommended Feast Watson decking oil and we purchased the natural "wet" (rather than matt) variety from Bunnings. After reading the (mostly) horrific reviews, I am unsure whether we should take a risk or return the product for another brand. Q: will our purchase turn our beautiful new deck into an orange, streaky mess, needing to be resanded and recoated often?
Hi, I have a treated pine deck and fence which I applied Feast Watson Traditional Timber Oil to 2 years ago. I now would like to paint it with a water based Monument grey to match my Colourbond fence. What minimal steps do I need to take? Thanks John
Hi John. Nappy san,hot water, good stiff brooom and brush. A pressure clean if you have one otherwise a hose will do. Mix up a strong mix and spread all over. Keep working it not letting it dry out. You should start to see it change to a brown colour and feel quite oily. When you’ve made enough mess wash down and repeat until the timber is really waterlogged. Watch out your broom/brush doesn’t start damaging the timber. Let it dry for a few days and you should be good to go.
Hope this helps.
Btw you don’t need to scrub to hard the nappy san will do the work.
Can I paint over traditional oil with a dulux weathersheid water based paint?
Short answer is no. Get yourself a good stiff broom and some nappy san wet down the deck throw the nappy san on and scrub along the boards keeping it wet all the time. This draws the oil out of the timber. You might have to do this a few times letting it dry in between. Don’t rush this and you should be good to go.
Ok,The job is wall cladding (spotted gum) .it has only ever had traditional oil on it and was last done 1 to 2 years ago . I'll give it a go, thanks
Can I mix in feast Watson Timber stain (walnut) into sikkens decking oil to make it darker
I wouldn’t mix them together. Cant see why you couldn’t stain the timber first though. Alternative would be to use sikkens deck stain walnut and sikkens oil on top.
Does the merbau decking oil have the merbau colouring pigment in it as I have a sliced pacific maple door and I want to colour it to look like merbau
It wrecked my deck. Worst product on the market. Use anything but Feast n Watson!
Why is my deck still tacky after weeks?
Not sure....what did you put on it?
Feast Watson Natursl Traditional Timber Oil
did you wipe off the excess before it got sticky? I went over mine with a clean whool mop. You may have put to much on at once. I know this doesn’t really help though. I’d get a new whool mop and start rubbing of the excess. It’ll be hard work but it’s all I think you can do.
Im looking at Feast and Weston Traditional Oil vs the Matt Oil what is the benefits. Its the Traditional Oil the same as Feast and Weston Decking Oil which is meant to be discontinued?
Hi Lynda. If your deck is fully covered traditional oil is ok and very forgiving to use. However if you have some covered some exposed like I do the exposed areas weathered much quicker and looked terrible. I persevered with it for 18 months until I switched to Matt oil. It soaked in and seems to seal the timber much better. And is holding up to the weather very well. I used natural on blackbutt.
I Done the first coat on the merbou post and it really darkened and I don’t want the posts any darker so my question is if I give it the second coat will it darken it even more or is it ok with only one coat. I used natural decking oil
I done the first coat on the merbou posts and it really darkened the posts I don’t want it any darker so my question is will the second coat make it darker and if so is it ok just to do one coat I used natural decking oil
Hey Anthony. Yes they will go darker every coat. I’ve got Blackbutt posts which I put one coat of natural timber oil on about 18 months ago and they still look ok. Vertical post don’t see anywhere near as much weather as decks do. They will get lighter as they age.
Cheers
i have applied F&W black japan deck stain today i notice some parts soaked in really well but others did not. I sanded the entire deck back prior (this also had a 5yr old coat of black japan)
unsure if i should wipe the sticky parts with turps before doing my second coat or should i do this after the second coat?
Hi Isszmeja. Just wondering if the sticky parts are where you’ve overlapped your brush/whoop mop. If this is the case try another coat trying to spread it differently. If the timber has knots in it you’ll see a difference where they are as well. More coats should even them out. Sometimes the first coat of many products looks pretty ordinary. Second and third coats usually sort things out. Hope I have been some help.
I have coated my timber weather boards with Feast Watson Matt Look Deck water based modified oil and run out of stain. I have checked my new cans of stain and see I have picked up Feast Watson Timber and deck stain which is oil based wash up brushes in turps by mistake. Can I apply the Feast Watson Timber and deck stain over the Feast Watson Matt look deck? Stuck in Covid 19 lock down and would like to finish the job.
I wouldn’t. They are two totally different things. The colour won’t match. The Matt seals the timber and the oil needs to soak in. Send it back and get some Matt to finish the job. Bunnings delivers give them a call to see if they can help.
Thanks Not the answer I wanted but as expected. Sadly Bunnings will only deliver for urgent essential Guess I’ll start my paving
Hi I’ve just re piled my deck (first coat) with matt tinted oil.. an hour later the rain has started.. I can see it’s not penetrating as the oil had a chance to dry just a little but what should I do to take care of the deck? Will it be ok?
The deck will be fine. Give it a miss until the weather clears up. If you can see water marks once it dries give it a wash with nappy san and start again. Otherwise just keep throwing on the coats on.
Can one put a Jarrah oil base on clear timber

Just applied first coat FW matt decking oil after professional sand and clean of new spotted gum deck which had been allowed to weather for a month first. The coat is thick and rough and gives a v. patchy appearance. On the door sill, it has formed dark runs, presumably requiring a thorough sand and repeat. I used to use Sikkens but didn't like the colour. FW's natural has a yellowy tinge which is also unpleasant after the beauty of the natural wood a morning ago. Very disappointed with c. $200 product. Do we have to sand the bloody thing back to put on another coat to get rid of the roughness? Note work done by professionals.
Scotty, It sounds like the "professionals" were not very professional & should come back & redo it. Hope you have not paid them yet! Without seeing it, it may be that they didn't use a correct paper for the final sand or apply the necessary 2 coats of what I consider to be a very poor product particularly if it has pigment in it.
So much so that after 7 years of my current spotted gum deck, and after talking to a lot of deck builders, I am replacing it with TREX composite decking which once down does not require any further maintenance or visits from these so called professionals.
For what it is worth, all of the deck builders reckoned that all Australian hardwood has too much sap & that if you want a timber deck only use merbau; which I did on a previous deck, coated regularly with Cabots natural timber oil, & had no trouble over a 20 + year period.
oh no, we applied this product to 3 decks 2m ago, after using the correct cleaner- so far so good, but does this product need to be sanded off to be reapplied IN 10months??? because its REALLY JUST ACRYLIC PAINT???
I have water based exterior stain on my gazebo decking. The sunlight exposed areas have the coating lifting when scrubbed with soapy water. How do I get an evenly cleaned deck to reapply a new coating?

I'm not an expert just a diy guy. Depending on what type of timber the deck is you may want to do what I did. Punch any nails down about two millimeters or if screws get them down then hire a sander and sand down to bare wood. Suggest only do this if the timber is totally dry. I guess the reason that the existing coat is lifting is that it hasn't bonded in the timber. It's not an enjoyable task but your be satisfied if it works. If you don't want to hire a sander to do it yourself you could always get it done professionally. Just a warning a drum sander, if you are not carefull, can really dig into the timber good luck
