Hi Penny, Ive always used the 98 octane premium fuel. If you want to check just call a Honda mower shop, they will tell you what to use or any shop that sells Honda mowers

Gday,
love my HRU 216D mower its about 7 ish years old now has cut wet and dry grass without effort and never failed, I am having just now a fuel supply problem and have taken apart the carburetta, cleand it out and reassembled it.
So what is happening is it starts and runs for about 6 mayby 8 seconds and then cuts out not to start unless I drain the fuel and clear out (as it seems) excess fuel in the chamber. Can you advise if this is a float problem or something else.
I like to repair and understand these things my self and look forward to your reply.

HI Vicki, power wise no problem however I have had a few issues in long grass if it is damp. The rear shut tends to get blocked. I still think that it is the best value for money and reliability. cheers Greg

Hi John N. Not sure why you need to know which is the left side of the mower. My guess would be from standing at the handle looking down to the mower, only a guess though.

Thanks for your answer but I read that if you lift to the right so the air filter is on top then you can reason the you must stand behind the machine to determine left and right As for why I needed to know I broke a drive pawl and they are right or left so there you go!

If you want to tilt the mower over for any reason make sure the oil entry point is on the side you are tilting to.
If the oil entry point is on the high side oil from the sump will pour through the engine. Not good.

HI, I have just bought a HRU216D self propelled mower second hand and would like to touch up the paint scratches etc. on the deck but can not find the colour of the deck and a paint (aerosol) supplier. Could anyone please advise.
A Australian supplier if possible.
Thanks in anticipation TT

Have just discovered by accident that Dupli Color Autospray available through Supercheap Auto stocks an exact match for the dark grey Deck on my Australian Honda HRU216 Self propelled mower. Its the same as the Toyota Graphite. My 8 year old mower now looks brand new again after the quick touch up of the scratches on the sides of the mower deck. I don't normally partake in these forums, however I know the pains and dead ends I went through to research the answer. None of the professionals I asked knew the answer. Here is the link to the Supercheap stock item.

Hi, my Honda HRU216 throttle cable is kinking at the control lever, and so the mower does not turn off. It seems that there is a design problem because the cable routing has been changed and cable is passed through a drilled hole through the plastic cover (as an after thought) rather than the original slot. So my question is, have Honda modified the cable? If so could you please give me the part number?

Hi Abe
I'm not connected to Honda and don't know the part number. Google might help. Probably best to go to a Honda mower dealer and ask. I have had problems with the cable not being stiff enough (or its sticking somewhere) thus not turning off the motor on my last mower. I had it repaired but it started doing it again intermittently about a month after. As I didn't have time to muck around I just pushed the lever forward that the cable is attached to on the engine to stop if it didn't stop as it should have.

Abe
Abe

Hi, thanks for your reply. As the length of throttle cable is too long (after re-routing by Honda), Honda has to come up with a stiffer and slightly shorter replacement throttle cable. Thats why I did not take the mower to the repair shop, because as you mentioned the replaced part did not work for long and never will. In short Honda had a problem and tried to fix it cheeply by drilling a hole in plastic cover rather than redesigning a new cable suitable for the new path.

Sounds like a Bodge job at the shop all 216 throttle cables should be same length

Just purchased one of these today. This is my first self propelled mower. It has three speeds. I asked at the shop as to whether changing the speeds could be done on the go. The shop said yes but the book is a little unclear but seems to say that one should release the clutch to change the speed. Any thoughts on that. Thanks in advance.

No it can't be changed on the go. You must disengage, change gear then re-engage

Papamike
Papamike

I was told to stop before changing gears, and to push off before engaging gear to increase the life of the gear box. I learned to be pleased with 2 to 3 years use out of a machine used commercially.

I have a Honda HRX217 which is self-propelled as well and I can easily change speed on the go. Doesn't seem to have any affect on the mower though I often do stop or at least slow down so i can be sure it has changed to the right speed. Not sure if its the same with the 216 though I would imagine it is

Hey Dennis, now while I may not have one of these myself (yet.... getting one soon) my friend does and I have a mowing business which we often use his mower for. If when you say the self propelled pro series you mean the HRU216M2 (the top-of-the-top-of-the-range one) it is rather heavy (around 60kg from what I remember) but if you have a trailer or ramp it should be fine. It is self propelled as you know already so it is a dream come true for big yards and thick grass. Tried using my own push mower yesterday on foot-high grass and it was absolute torture. The HRU216M2 is incredibly powerful though and has a blade brake which is helpful. As for the price RRP is currently $1,750 but a few places have them at $1,449 so its expensive but well worth the price. Not sure about trade-ins it probably varies by dealer so maybe ask your local mower shop.
Hope this helps.

Is it possible to make the mower self-propelled without the blade spinning since sometimes I need to move the heavy mower across places like driveway on a slope where is no grass to mow?

2 answers

Not sure what model your mower is but all mine are self propelled, and stop spinning as soon as I let go of the bar . I believe one model came out without this function.

Hi Corey, my name is Sarah and I work in marketing for Honda Power Equipment. This sounds like your Roto-Stop cable needs an adjustment. We recommend you to have the unit assessed an authorised repaired. You can locate your closest authorised repaired at :http://dl.hondampe.com.au/Default.aspx?d=P/E.

Hi, I don't have any movement in mine, as slight 'play' could cause dramas. Hope this helps.

Why are the blades on my mower HRU216 loose?

The nut, bolt and washer is designed to allow the blade to swing back if it hits an object such as a rock. Centrifugal force will return it to the cutting position when it is clear.

Am trying to change the rear wheels because the self-drive slips too much. One wheel changed but I cannot lock the axle to get the other wheel off. Is there an axle locking socket that I have missed?

4 answers

I think you would have to talk to Honda about that one

Rover177
Rover177

Had another look and then the brainwave - Stilson wrench. It locks onto the axle against the direction of movement and the wheel nut came loose immediately. Videos had just shown the thing being undone with a normal socket but in this case, the whole shaft and gearbox had turned. The Stilson did the trick and have cut the grass without the wheels falling off.

Chicka
Chicka

If you hold the clutch in while undoing the bolt on the wheel it will lock the gearbox and enable it to be undone the same as the other wheel. Hold the clutch in again when tightening back up.
