iRobot Roomba 980 Questions & Answers
VerifiedMPN: 36403495I have 2 Roomba 980's. One runs every other day while the higher traffic area one runs daily. The one that runs daily has began not being able to leave the docking station correctly after charging is complete or to begin it's programmed time. It seems to be "stuck" to the station and pulls it with the unit. It will eventually turn loose, but likely will not begin running. Even if it does run, I must replace the docking station as it is now away from it's place at the wall.
I have rugs with Fringes. Will that work?

I have roomba over a year old and I have few problems that I notice is happening. 1. Roomba sometimes its not starting the schedule clean up and only making the sound when its time to clean I have manually press the clean button on the roomba or through the app 2. Keep getting Error 2 (Clean Roomba debris extractor), in which I always make sure to clean the everything after each use. 3. Is it normal that the roomba making a rattling noise while cleaning in hard surface floor?

Will the room a get stuck if I have a fringe rug?
Hi Nancy It is possible, I have a couple of rugs that i have to fold or pick up so my Roomba doesn't get stuck on them. The alternative is to have the fringe under the rung when the Roomba is on.
Has anyone else updated to the latest iRobot app and after the update got an error 15 with no option to reset? I downloaded the app update and my poor Roomba 960 seems to have been bricked... Ive only had it out of the box for 6 months or so... is this a faulty version of firmware?
Is anyone having issues with the Recharge & Resume function on the Roomba 980 model. Mine just depletes the battery and runs out of power as it does not recognize a low-level state anymore.
Hi Ray, We aren’t having any problems with the Recharge and Resume. Having said that it has only run low on battery once and that was when we first got it, it went home and came back out and continued on once it had enough charge.
Ok, thanks. We've had our Roomba 980 for two years with no problems but in the last couple of months, the unit no longer returns to the charging station when it gets low on power and just keeps running until out of energy (around 110 minutes), then chimes to place Roomba on the charger.
Hi Ray, Based on the fact you have had your Roomba for approx 2 years, it sounds as though the battery may need replacing. You can also try, if not already so, having the docking station in a central location of the home, that way the Roomba doesn't have too far to go back to recharge. Kind regards iRbobot
Thanks, Rebecca. The battery has been replaced (about 7 months ago as the first one wasn't lasting very long). The new battery reduced the number of times the Roomba paused the cleaning job to recharge before completing the task. While the base station is centrally located in the home, I don't believe it contributes to the issue as the unit does not attempt to return to its base station anymore (prior to the problem, the home button would flash to indicate a return to base to charge)....now it just keeps working until the power supply runs out.
Update...The Roomba 980 was sent off for repair through an extended care plan. We've been informed that the fault is a product controller failure and is not able to be repaired. The unit has been written off and will be replaced with a new 980. Hope this helps anyone with a similar issue.

Does the Roomba 980 work on black carpet? I have a 780 & it will not work on dark carpet. Cheers Sue
Our carpets and flooring are fairly light or mid toned so can't really help you. Sorry.
I would assume so. We have light beige and grey carpets and it works fine. I have also vacuumed my dark blue mat and it worked fine.

Can you use more than one Roomba 980 (one for upstairs and one for downstairs), and will the smartphone feature work for the two individually or will they clash? Other brands really 'suck' when it comes to this.
I think you may be able to. I have my Roomba paired with my phone but it gives me the option to add another Roomba. Maybe it has different frequencies? Both my husband and I have the same Roomba on our phone apps and can control it without any issues either. You can also pair a Braava jet mop and a Roomba on the same app.
Good Morning Pollyfodder You sure can operate multiple iRobot Roomba 980's on one device. Once the app is downloaded. You have the option to add a Roomba. You can operate upto 10 Roombas on one app. These can be individually schedule for different times. Allowing customers to have a Roomba up stairs and downstairs. Kind regards iRobot

What floor surface are you cleaning on? Agreed, check the rotors (and the Motorhead’s) for hair or other debris. It doesn’t pick up dirt if it’s not rolling completely. Also check the suction area, something might be blocking it.

I am thinking of irobot. I have open plan living. Floor boards and tiles & Pets. How efficient is this unit?
We have a border collie dog that shreds his coat all the time and it collects all his hair. You will need to check the rotor every week to check the hair doesn't get caught, unless your dog has short hair then it would be fine. Its very effective between our tiles and carpet. The amount of dust that came out of our carpets when we first moved into this house was incredible. It also has long bristles that get into the nooks around your furniture. We highly recommend it, its very effective in our house. I also like that I can turn the vacuum on when I am not at home using the app!!

I have a i inch drop between the bathroom and hallway, and lounge and bedroom, will Roomba navigate this?
I would think it would get stuck a few times but saying that Roomba 4wdrives over our fireplace area which is about one inch from the ground. She always manoeuvres over carpets/rugs and our foam kids placemats so it might be ok but do expect it to get stuck sometimes or just miss that area because she's decided to go elsewhere.

Will this vacuum work on black carpet?
HI Elizabeth The iRobot Roomba are not suitable for dark to black surfaces. Due to their cliff sensors they see this colour as a drop and will asked to be moved to a new location. Kind regards iRobot
I have black carpet. My stairs are timber. Cliff sensor no problem. Mine works well on dark carpet in terms of cleaning and on and off rugs. You could always use the barrier if you have black carpet on stairs.

what does code 15 mean on a irobot roomba 980

I have three 980s, first 2 are over a year old - third one was new at xmas and purchased from HNorman. Beside the voice being different to the other 2 - it leaves the dock and immediately errors with #6. This is on light cream coloured tiles. Its new. The sensors are not dirty. The bin is not full. I have factory reset it via the app and also holding the clean button down. I even reset its connection to WIFI (knowing this wouldnt help but wanted to do it anyways). To get it to do some cleaning, I have to be home and pick it up and move it to the middle of the floor but it has not completed a single cleaning job to date. Yet when I place one of my existing roombas in the same spot - I get a completed clean job. My first question is why is the voice different in this 980 to my other 2 x 980s? Second question why does the new one keep giving an error #6 as soon as it leaves its dock?
Why does my Roomba stop in the middle of the room when there are no obstacles and it is still charged?
I have a Roomba 980. I’ve owned it for about 3 mo. At first it was doing great with my golden retriever hair but now when I run it after it’s done there is clumps of white hair all over. The bin and filter are clean and I take out the rollers to remove the hair usually every other use. What is wrong?

Just bought my room a. It leaves the dock and cleans about 7 ft and then returns to the dock. What about the rest of the room? Did I miss a step in set up?
Sorry. I have no idea. Mine worked fine from the first day and continues to be great.

Good Morning Pij Thank you for contacting us. I would recommend resetting your Roomba back to factory settings and starting again. Press and hold the "Clean", "Home" and "Spot" buttons together for 10 seconds. Once this is completed the Roomba will play you a little tune.

Every 15-30 seconds error 16 comes up, its def on a clear flat surface (tiles). I've followed all instructions and it still keeps happening. Also doest go in a straight line even though its an open area, it keeps going around in circles. Any ideas,purchased yesterday??

Just got a Roomba yesterday, and after 90 mins of vacuuming, the same problem developed - Roomba moving in a circle followed by error 16 or error 9 after about 10-20 secs.
Can I change the permanent location of the home base of an i7 after it has mapped entire house?
