How are the Kelly Safari TSRs in wet bitumen conditions?

Mike5353

The ones we had were brilliant. Left the Mickey T's and Cooper (the worst tyre I've ever experienced in the rain) for dust. No tram tracking or aquaplaining. I ran 265/75 - 16 and never had the tyres over 34psi. The Coopers in comparison were an exercise in terror and survival. I've heard they've improved but I won't risk it. I can't get the TSR in my current size so I've switched to Toyos and have been equally impressed.

hi guys I have a mitshi challenger and am tossing up between the maxxis at980 , cooper st maxx but leaning towards the Kelly safari tsy but they don't make them in 265/65 r7 only a 265/70 r17 which doesn sound bad but in SA its over legal limit :( any ideas?

Are you sure about the legal limits? ADR's talk about 5cm height variation as I have the same issue with the Pajero. Standard is 265/70 16 and I run 265/75 16 which works out at approximately 2cm height difference. Insurance company couldn't care less. Perfectly legal. It will change your gearing, braking and handling & might affect your fuel economy. Personally I haven't noticed any difference. As for tyres, I have had nothing but trouble with coopers. Maxiss seem good but I'll stick with Kelly's. Pulled a mates patrol out a muddy paddock in Gippsland yesterday. He's running coopers, bogged to the sills and drove past him, hooked and snatched him straight out all at 16 psi. He got to wash both cars!

When your speedo reads 100km/hr you're actually at 103.3 km/hr

so apparently the increase is too much in sa :( do i bother and just get em?

Good choice of car, I worked at mitsubishi for 5 years and am a big fan of the challenger, VP in my 4wd club has one on 33's and it is very very capable. Anyway.. You will find that your speedo is approximately 3% below accurate anyway and that going up one profile (size) will make it spot on. I would be very surprised if that isn't legal in your state. You will also find that any chunky/mud tyre is only available is a 70 profile for 17" rim, that is because that profile is a Light Truck Profile, which are stronger construction and a far better option.

Help plz , iv allways run BF A/T & got about 70000km out of the last set & can't fault them apart from the price . Now I'm thinking of giving Kelleys TSR a run . Is this comparing apples to pairs or is Kelleys a good thing?

Mike5353
Mike5353

Sort of. The Kelly TSR are far more off road oriented. I use Kelly's on my personal car, 03 Pajero. I've unfortunately had to drive new patrols every year for 8 years with new BFG's for work. Nothing will help a patrol ride, steer or grip better but in saying that the BFG's work well. The Kelly's continue to amaze me. Quiet, fantastic grip and great ride. Can't tell you how many times I've been up to the hubs in mud with a trailer full of wood behind and the Kelly's just rip out. BFG would be stuck solid. So to with Coopers & Mikey T's I've had previously. The BFG's get the job done but wear quickly. In saying that, the Patrol is the single worst vehicle I've ever driven. So no, apples ain't apples. I'll be buying Kelly's again.

Hi would you pick the kelly safari tsr

Or the maxxis at 980.. Would only be doing recreational 4x4 nothing serious... Thanks

I have not seen the Maxxis 980, but the Kelly Safari TSR I have used for the past 100k+ km's have never let me down, either on the black stuff (Qld, SA, Vic, NSW, & ACT), dirt (Outback QLD & Cape York), sand (Fraser Is), balloon well at lowered pressures & never had a puncture. As with any tire careful monitoring of pressures & rotation usually sees a tire last. Value for the $$ I'm happy with the TSR.

Hey what psi should the Kelly TSR be run on around town thank you ?

Craig54

I run mine at 40psi for the blackstuff, 36psi on dirt but have never had to gone below 18psi on soft sand. They balloon really well & have never been bogged or had a puncture in 100000 km.
