Tefal Smart Protect Questions & Answers
Verifiedhave a 4yr old Smart Protect Iron. Power light is illuminated but iron will not heat or operate. There is water in it. Tried gently shaking to reactivate and have tried different power points but no luck. At one stage all the water started dripping through the holes in the plate. Any idea what could be wrong or what else I could be doing ?
Hi Munia, Thank you for contacting us, and sorry to hear about the issue you’re experiencing with your Tefal Smart Protect iron. Based on the symptoms you’ve described — the power light illuminating but the iron not heating or producing steam, along with water draining through the soleplate — this is unfortunately indicative of an internal fault rather than a user-adjustable setting.
On Smart Protect models, the temperature is electronically controlled. If the internal heating element, thermostat, or thermal safety fuse fails, the indicator light may still illuminate even though the iron no longer heats. The sudden release of water through the soleplate can also occur when the steam valve or internal solenoid is no longer operating correctly.
At this stage, we recommend trying the following final checks if you haven’t already:
Empty the water tank completely and allow the iron to dry for 24 hours.
Refill with fresh tap water only (no additives) and test again.
Ensure the steam trigger is not being held down continuously when testing.
If the iron still does not heat after this, it would require internal repair. As the appliance is approximately 4 years old, it is likely outside the manufacturer’s warranty period, and repair may not be cost-effective compared to replacement.
For safety reasons, we do not recommend attempting to open or repair the iron yourself.

Fv4970 Smart Protect Iron Auto off light is illuminated and iron will not heat or operate. Tried gentle shake to reactivate tried different power points. Clearly it has power but I am unable to disengage the auto off Any tips please?
Hi ... I have a Smart Protect FV6872 (Australia). Just unboxed and tried ironing. Seemed great for a few minutes, then started leaking water from the soleplate onto my clothes while ironing. Water level is no where near overfilled, so it's not that. It's happened on both garments I've ironed so far. Very annoying and time-consuming.
Hi Valerie, sorry to hear about your Tefal iron. Are you able to send us a private message with your name and contact details, so that we can offer our help and hopefully resolve this issue?
Kind regards, Tefal Australia
My pro steam express is about 6 years old and has been brilliant. Now most of the holes are filled with hard calc material. Have cleared a few with tooth pick and steaming with vinegar and water but there are a lot of holes which are completely blocked and can not be cleaned. Do I need a new iron. thank Chris email jwheal@bigpond.net.au
Why does the steam iron leak?
Hi Francis, are you able to share more about when the iron leaks? Here are some tips from our blog that you may find helpful: - To avoid any water dripping, set the steam control to « dry » mode while filling the iron water tank and while the iron is not being used (this would be the icon with a steam image crossed out).
- Do not push the "Turbo Boost" steam trigger more than 3 times in a row. Wait for a few seconds before starting again.

My iron is spitting out all this calcium grit. Can I put demineralised water in my iron? And where is the Anti-cal filter. How do I remove it I can't find it! HELP.
Hi Cookie, sorry to hear that. If you would like to use demineralised water, we recommend to use a 50/50 mixture of demineralised water and tap water. As we are unable to upload images here, please find the link to download an image of where the anti-calc is and a copy of the manual for your reference (https://we.tl/t-jJTMqcECtz). Hope this helps!

I have loved this iron for many years, and yes initially it did spit water but over time it settled down.. however I’m very depressed at the moment as I plugged it in yesterday and it won’t heat up and if I fill it with water it leaks out everywhere? I believe I have had it for 2-3 years is it time for a new one ?? I have only ever used demineralised water
I love mine Best iron ever
I am having this same problem @christine. did you find a solution
What are the instructions re spray function
Tafel iron not getting heated and water is leaking from side. Why?
How to perform self timescale clean
Hi I cant find in the instructions what the eco and normal setting is for?
When you first turn it on does the temperature go all the way up and then drops according to type of fabric or what?
That might be too late if I start ironing something requiring low temp.
How do you know that temp is ready to iron?
Thanks
Just turn it on and you're good to go. It really is that simple. I went from a silky top to denim jeans without stopping and it was amazing. I took that chance mind you because the top had grease stains on it from cooking :( There are lots of youtube videos on it if you want to check them out. I found out that I could adjust the steam on it by watching youtube. The first time I turned it on the steam was pouring out and I had to refill it two or three times. I thought it was faulty. Then I checked out a couple of videos and found that I could adjust it and it's perfect now. I really do love this iron. I'm not sorry I bought it.
By the way. I noticed you asked the question on the 16th. Please don’t think I was slack and didn’t bother answering till the 20th. I have literally just received it tonight.
My brand new Tegal Smart Protect FV4970 iron spits and sputters quite violently each time I turn it on. I am filling it with distilled water to the required level. Is this normal? Thanks Carmel
Can't agree, Don. When the tank is almost empty, it still tends to spit.
Hi Carmel, my Tefal iron has not behaved in this way . I woulld think may be one of your settings may not be working correctly or you may have a faulty iron. Return to store of contact the Manufactor.
How did you go with this Carmel? I find mine to be very noisy regardless of water level. Also sounds like it spitting as it releases lots of steam when I stand it back up. Not sure if this is right.
I have the same problem with my Tefal iron (same model). Have tried reducing water etc but continues to spit out water including leaking from the hotplate at the bottom. I am giving up on it and going to buy another brand as it is marking my clothes.
when I use the steam function water spurts out on the clothes. Any ideas?
You may have over filed the water level. I had the same problem till I realised there is a water level you fill to. Hope this is of help to Jack.
