Breville The Barista Pro BES878 Questions & Answers
VerifiedI have a relatively new Barista Pro BES878. When texturing the milk, the steaming cuts out automatically before the milk reaches the desired temperature. Isn't this supposed to be a manual system? It is a problem as the milk is not hot enough when the steaming cuts out.
It does cut off if it senses it's pushing thru a lot of steam. My suggestion is to clean it as sometimes when the nozzle is partially blocked, i had experienced it cutting off a lot earlier and milk is then not hot enough. The way to tell a nozzle is blocked is when you stop the steam, it is still hissing out steam via the unblocked holes. When it's completely unblocked, i found it stopped immediately and no more hissing, Good luck.
Thank you. I will check that out.
Hi, my BBP steamer and extractor seem to lack pressure. The steamer starts ok then the steam reduces to a trickle. The extractor also seems to be short on pressure and takes a lot longer than normal. Any suggestions bplease?
Flush and descale. And replace water filter
Hello I have a Barista Pro BES878 "Fill the water tank" is displayed on the screen. i thought the water pump is not working i replace it but still not working Is there anyone has the same issue
I am extracting coffee but the water flow stops after 20 seconds. I have tried different baskets and different grinds all with the same results. Any tips please?
need new pump, 5 second trick solution plush won't fix this just a quick fix not repair the problem, i did these quick fix many times then after all replace new pump with 51w work amazing.
When I flush my barista pro (with duol wall and clean disk), the water coming out from portafilter. Is it normal?
Use the rubber insert disk
I purchased the 878 about 6mths ago. The tap for the steam wand is easy to turn on but once tecturing the milk it is extremely difficult to turn off. Seems like there is an expansion problem in the tap mechanism. Any ideas? Thanks Peter
I have just purchased the Barista Pro and used twice. This morning I can’t turn the arm on the portafilter into the group head? Any ideas please?
Not asking you to suck eggs...but the only reason on a normally functioning machine I could see this happening is if the Portafiller is overfull. Have you used the Razer to ensure it is not overfilled?
Sure have
Even when the machine is off but plugged into the power socket, it keeps running water into the drip tray until it overflows with a low buzz sound, kind of like it would briefly do after releasing pressure after using the steam. Anyone else had this or any tips for fixing? If it's out of warranty what should I do?
Have not had that issue with ours. Most definately a fault that should should be covered by warranty.
Hi, We turned our Barista Pro on yesterday and heard an audible pop then, all the lights started flashing and continue to do so, we can make coffees as normal just this continual flashing lights Anyone else had this happen and if so did you manage to stop it. thank you.
My machine turns off after 5 seconds..everything….steam, hot water, etc. Tried descaling but it wont either descale and flush. Problem started after i flushing. Jave anyone experienced same and have a fix?
I have the same problem. please help
Mine is doing the same thing but if I wait half an hour it unexpectedly decides to work. Machine has been temperamental at times inthe year and a bit I have owned it. Do not recommend.
I had the exact same issue and made me go crazy for over a week. As someone suggested, flow meter isn’t the issue if you get water from group head / hot water tap and steam wand for those 5 seconds. I had a cracked elbow connector to thermo jet which got a few components wet. I gave my machine a good clean up while replacing that elbow or so I thought. Apparently, there was some water damage to heat sensor and calcification on connector caused the sensor to go dud. This made thermo jet to over heat and shut down in 5 seconds. For me, the solution was as simple as cleaning the connector. Some people may have to replace this part but I wish good luck to all and hope this helps anyone having this issue.
Had exactly the same problem, my machine is 2.5yo. Tried descaling multiple times with no effect. Took it apart, cleaned the connector (it looked pristine for me, no water leaks anywhere or calcination), cleaned the meter itself (it opens easily, just turned two halves in different directions). Put it all back and rather to my surprise, it worked again.
Hey Gary, hey Alex, do you happen to have some pictures of the components (thermo jet, elbow connector, meter) - I have the same issue but so far no luck with descaling.
Brand new machine out of the box. Turned on to do initial setup and it will not complete the flush cycle. Counts down for 2 seconds then beeps three times and resets to flush. Help
Air lock in water filter
Today my machine turns off after 5 seconds..everything….steam, hot water, etc. Tried to descale but it also stopped after 5 seconds…machine just 12 months old
Same problem;( Did you fix this?
It had to go back to Breville to be fixed. It needed a new part…back now and working My machine was under warranty
Do you have to turn your machine off after use
Hey Linda, our machine has now been fixed so yes we do turn it off after use
It will turn itself off after 20mins
My Breville steamer is not functioning properly. It cannot heat and steam enough milk for 2 coffees. It also lets off a lot of steam from underneath (around the drip tray).
I have the same problem :( have you figured it out?
I have the same problem what do I do
Having the same problem, but only after owning the machine for a few months.
This is a design fault. It seems that the Steam runs for just 90 seconds then stops. This is not quite enough for two cups.
you need to clean the tip of the steamer. My works fine now.
Agreed. I had steam coming out from behind the drip tray. Must be a pressure relief valve. Just clean the steam wand holes.
Glad I found this before I raised a warranty job. This appears to be cumulative also ie. 30 secs to pull the shot, 5 secs to purge the steam wand leaves you with 55 seconds of actual steaming time before you need to switch the steam off and back on if you want to continue.
For Breville Barista Pro the maximum temperature (on the highest - hottest setting) for either water without the portafilter attached or with the portafilter after running an expresso (double) shot is always around 60-65C (after even repeating process a number of times consecutively). Has anyone else had this problem? I would have expected at least 75C at the hottest setting! The hot water outlet temp. is around 70-75C and the steamer works fine - I can get water to 90C. Very frustrating and I like my coffee hot. I have contacted Breville but they keep coming back with more of the same questions (which I have already answered!). Machine is just over a week old!
Same problem here. Michael, what was the outcome?
When I push the power button the machine lights up and a beeping sound starts for a few seconds. The machine won’t start brewing but I can get hot water and the steamer works. Anyone having the same problem?
you need to change the solenoid valve, as the water will go to the drip tray instead of the brewing head
mine is haveing absolutely no flow. no coffee, no hot water, no steam. everythin stops after 5 sec. faulty solenoide?
You are lucky think you can just change the thermoblock it should work.
My machine won't complete a flush cycle. I have followed instructions, it begins and shuts off within 4 seconds. Screen returns to ready but still displays flush.
Did Breville not help?
You need to change the flow-meter
Considering purchasing the Breville barista pro (sea salt) however concerned about the overall paint finish as some consumers commented on poor finish and resultant scratches after short time.
I recently purchased a Barista Pro and noticed that the steam shuts off at about the time the milk is at temperature. Is this a feature of this model? I can find no mention of it in the instruction book of online.
I have the exact same issue & no it is not normal. The steam function is 100% manual & should not cut off until you shut it off, or you leave it going for some ridiculous amount of time. I contacted Breville & now have it for repair under warranty (I hope). The communication & assistance from Breville is very poor to say the least, & unfortunately I only have 1 service centre to pick from in the ACT region & they are even worse at communicating. Having now read a lot of other issues people are having with this particular machine I am regretting the purchase. And as it is not that cheap an outlay it will be an Italian made machine next time for sure.....Rant over.....
Update on this issue: I have had my machine in for repair under warranty which has been for over 5 weeks. I spoke with the repairer today (they were fantastic, despite my first impressions). Even though there is nothing in the manual, online or publicly told to the consumer, the Barista Pro steam function will auto cut-off after 90secs. Which with all things being equal just get's you to 60 degrees. If you want hotter milk you will have to turn off the steam & start over. If I had known this I would not have purchased it. Bad form Breville, this will be my last Breville coffee machine.
This is not a fault, but a design setting. You will hear 3 beeps and the steamer will shut off. This is just short of my temperature liking at 65-70 degrees. Surely this is adjustable. I’m yet to find this setting.
Why does my steam turn off when milk is only at 58deg C ?
My best guess is the faulty temperature sensor
See my reply above
I am no technician but the biggest difference between this machine & the Barista Express (which lasted me over 5 years) is a thermojet vs thermoblock. I think this so called better tech is far from it & the cause of all of the issues people are experiencing.
Yes thanks for you response, I now know from Breville the reality is that there’s a 90 seconds (H&S !!) time out in the software that stops the Pro will producing steam so it is exhausted well before it steams mugs of coffee. The only fix available is to turn off the steam before that time and quickly turn it back on again to fulfil its role, so not the end of the world compared to the other benefits of the Pro version. Rgds
This device does NOT know the temperature of the milk. It simply shuts off after 90 seconds.
I am disgusted that it’s taken your support team, marketing, engineers and designers so long to provide a response only to offer such an outrageous excuse that I’m struggling for words to express my view. How you expect loyal and repeat customers such as myself to accept your frail excuse when I had previously alerted you to comparison of my new Barista Pro BES878 performance against my previous lower specification Barista Express that also does not read the temperature of the milk yet managed for many years to heat up the volume of milk required for a man’s sized mug without cutting off prematurely is basically an insult to my intelligence. You openly market the Pro BES878 as a superior model with many sophisticated advances over the less expensive models but are unwilling to providing an honest description. While awaiting a response from you I discovered the truth that the actual reason the pump cuts off prematurely is that it is a timer based mechanism required to compensate for an inadequate steam pump that is not able to proved the volume of steam reasonably expected from such a machine without failure, a fact that you fail to mention within your marketing spin or your reply. I suggest the omission of this flaw in design is bordering on a breach of the sale of good Act under fit for purpose and am confident that your sales of this particular model at some ca$500 more than the lower specification model would be vastly reduced if you had provided an accurate description advising the inadequacies in terms of the steam pump. Your apparent shoddy mishandling of my complaint regarding a genuine flaws within your machine’s performance is the sort of matter that finds its way to the various fair trading TV shows and authorities that I’m sure would alert a lot of potential and existing customers to what can only be described as an inadequate barista. I only upgraded to the Barista Pro BES878 based on its advertised performance as my Barista Express was fairly new and working very well.
There are no "other" benefits to the Pro. We have 4 Barista Express machines all going much better tahn the Barista Pro less than 1 year old!
Nice rant, but I doubt they read this thread. There should be ample time to stream milk.
We are actually struggling now for two cups regular sized coffee with the steam wand shutting off mid-frof. This 90seconds people have mentioned, is this for STEAM function only or does it include the pulling of a shot also which would use the heat pump.
May just mean there is a pause period between coffee shot and using the steam wand..
There has to be a reasonable and practical solution. Its definitively not the end of the world..
