Cabot's Aquadeck Questions & Answers
VerifiedHow do I clean this horrific pigment from your aquadeck product off my colorbond??? This product is a joke - it’s not decking oil at all - it’s paint and it’s ruined my deck
Why are you asking how to remove Aquadeck off Colorbond and also saying that your deck is ruined. For me Aquadeck is to apply to decking, timber furniture, timber screens, etc. Why would you apply it to Colorbond, and I really don’t understand how you are saying Aquadeck is paint, please explain. I would contact Aquadeck and ask them, as you will find them, in my experience, very helpful, however, I would imagine they will also need similar answers to the above questions. Cheerio, Zowner
Because my deck is attached to my outdoor studio which is clad in colorbond. When I applied the Aquacrap, the applicator rubs against the colour bond depositing the Aquacrap on it. It dries in about 2mins and does not wipe off. I’m not an id*ot …
Aquacrap is pretty much paint. It’s so ridiculously heavily pigmented it’s a joke. When applied, it foams up and drips down any vertical surface and dries like running paint. The pigment deposits into the grain and dries. It does not penetrate the timber like the hydrocarbon based decking oil.
I have spotted gum boards which are now stained a crappy brown colour. I can only hope that a few weeks of sun and rain strips that trash out so I can apply some proper oil …
I feel your pain We had exactly the same problem. And yes I agree is more paint than anything. Sun will make it worse - it will start to peel and won’t cone off by itself Solution Cutek stripping solution - not cheap but it worked and didn’t pour horrible chemicals into the garden. For the older aqua deck we eventually learnt to put 3 or 4 boards on , left for 15/20 mins , reapplied , left for 15/20 mins , reapplied a 3rd time left for 15/20 mins then removed with high pressure sprayer. And it did look like paint - it came off in strips. Deck underneath was fine and we have used Cutek oil to restore which is great. Colourbond - repaint. We had metal posts the stuff got on and nothing would shift it! We repainted. Good luck.
Hello Paul L., Thank you for reaching out to Cabot’s via Product Review. We are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the results of our Cabot’s Aquadeck. You could firstly use metholated spirits, but it will depend on how long the product has settled on the Colorbond. To help with the application to the vertical surface and understand the specifics of your project, we would like to ask you a few questions—that way, we can find the potential reasons and, more importantly, a solution. If you wish, feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006 and quote your ticket number 1262182 to our Cabot’s technical consultant who takes your call. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:00am to 6:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 3:00pm AEST. Kind regards, Kaaren - Team Cabot's
Cabot's - I don't need 'application to vertical surfaces' - I need it REMOVED. Take a look at reviews for this product - it rates VERY POORLY on every platform. I didn't think to look up any reviews because I trusted your brand...... frankly, if I had a product that fared as badly on review platforms as this junk, I'd pull it from sale. I spend a lot of money on my timber - spotted gum. This trash has ruined it. Now I have to find out how to get rid of it. BTW metho does nothing to remove it from my colourbond. This is PAINT, not decking treatment. It's beyond unacceptable
Marianne - Thank you. I'm looking forward to spending hours getting rid if this garbage. This product is a joke..... and not a funny one ........
Can Cabot's clear exterior (water based) be used over Cabot's Aquadeck (water based)
Hello Don E., Great question! Thanks for reaching out with your enquiry. We wouldn't recommend using Cabot's Exterior Clear as it isn't formulated for foot traffic (if the project is decking). The Cabot's Aquanamel will be the final finish and won't need any additional product over it. Please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006, and we can discuss all the ins and outs of your project! Our operating hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm AEST. Kindest regards, Kaaren - Team Cabot's
Hi. I used aqua deck water based deck oil in Merbau on pine. I have done three coats and it is basically bright orange! What can I’d do to make it match my Merbau decks? Stain over the top? Do I have to sand it back to bare timber (which will be impossible in some spots).
Hello Monica, Sorry to hear of your dilemma. Google Cabot’s Aquadeck Colour Guide. You will find examples showing colours on Pine boards when oiled, you may have been better off using the Jarrah tinted oil, however I would have a look at the **stain colour guide** and contact Aquadeck. They are very helpful and knowledgeable. We have not tried to do what you have attempted to do. Best of luck.

Hi Zowner, Thank you for your fabulous feedback regarding our Technical Team! Kind Regards Kaaren - Team Cabot's
Can I use a roller to apply Cabots Aquadeck, rather than the lambs wool applicator? Last time I used the applicator I ended up with tufts of wool all over the deck.
I would not recommend aqua deck It did not last well and had to be stripped off before a proper product was applied Huge waste of money and time.
Hello Ian C You are correct a wool applicator is hopeless. There are applicators that use a different material which will work better for you. I would not use a roller, as it won’t be easy to achieve an even finish. We have always used a thick soft haired broom about 300mm wide, and a 75-100mm standard bristle brush to cut in against any walls or posts, prior to brooming the oil on. Essentially a broom is the same as a brush with a long handle. You will find the broom easier to get the most even finish, and it is super quick. Use a wallpaper bucket or a wide roller tray or bucket to place the oil in. Unlike Marianne, we, (as a decking contractor), have always had a great experience and happy customers that we often did more work for at a later date.
Hello Marianne, please reach out to us on 1800 011 006, quoting your ticket number 1202278. We would like to ask you a few questions to identify potential reasons. Kind regards, Kaaren at Cabot's
Hi Ian C. Thank you for your enquiry. As an alternative, you could use the Cabot’s Deck Brush, rather than a roller. The quality filament blend ensures consistent product coverage. Please contact our senior woodcare team on 1800 011 006 if we can help with your enquiry further. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm AEST. Hi How long after applying the second coat of cabots aquadeck do I have to wait before putting furniture back on the deck? Thanks
Hi Mary, Thank you for reaching out to Cabot’s via Product Review. For an exterior deck, it is usually 1-2 days after the second coat. However, this is heavily dependent on the weather conditions. It is a little tricky to discuss products & applications over this platform, as there could be many factors that need to be considered for this process. Please give us a call at 1800 011 006, and our Cabot’s technical consultants can help you with product recommendations.
We hope to hear from you soon! Thanks, Minidu at Cabot's
We always told the customer, In Queensland, no furniture for 7 days minimum in winter and 5 days in Summer.
I have a deck that has been coated with Intergrain Ultradeck Natural. Can I use Cabots over the top of the intergrain finish
I don’t know the intergrain product but what I would say is Aquadeck is an awful product. It does not last it appears to be more like paint than deck treatment. Ours flaked and we spent a lot of money stripping it off
Hi Joe, Thank you for reaching out to Cabot's via Product Review. We'd love to help with your query, but in order to do so, we need to ask you a few more questions. Please give us a call at 1800 011 006, and our technical consultants can help you with this one.

The issue isn’t complex - the product did not last at all well under Australian conditions. It was flaking, looked awful and certainly was not providing protection to the decking. Water was not being repelled at all. We found a solution. We used another company’s stripping product, applied 3 coats of that, used a high pressure cleaner to get it off. It came off in brown flakes/strips including where it still looked ok. We then used actual decking oil made by a different company. Looks fabulous, has lasted well and is protecting the deck
After all the applications of Aquadeck that we have done as a contractor, I am baffled regarding your experience. I have no connection with Cabot’s, I can only think that you had a bad batch, the preparation was not up to scratch, or maybe preparation cleaner still on the decking, prior to the coating.

@Zowner please don’t assume that you know anything about how we prepared our deck , who did it or to understand our experience. I have given my honest review.
Hi, I am restoring a deck that's been exposed to a lot of sun and rain and lost most of its previous stain. I have thoroughly sanded and washed the deck. However I accidentally bought and applied ONE coat Aquadeck (Jarrah) when I actually intended to use Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain.
Since I have only put one coat (which almost immediately got absorbed into the timber), can I do my second and third coat with Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain.
Also - which is more durable of the two for a deck that's heavily exposed to sun and rain?
Thank you for your help. Pallavi

Whatever you do, don’t put more aquadeck on. Worst decision we ever made. Took 3 coats of stripper to remove it. Personally I would strip it before putting anything else on. It’s more like paint so it whill prob impact the effectiveness of what you put on after. Durability is very poor - it peeled in the sun and didn’t repel water. Frankly I think Cabot’s should remove this product or call it decking paint - would be more accurate.
Hi Pallavi S, Since you’ve already sanded and washed the deck, the surface is well-prepared. Applying one coat of Aquadeck Jarrah shouldn’t cause major issues, as Aquadeck is a water-based penetrating oil and it tends to absorb quickly into bare timber. Because it has soaked in, it won’t leave a heavy film that could interfere with further coats. You can generally apply Cabot’s Deck & Exterior Stain over the top, provided the first Aquadeck coat has fully dried. However, results may vary slightly in terms of colour consistency, as you are layering different products. To minimise any patchiness, do a small test area first. If the colour looks good and adhesion feels sound, go ahead with the 2nd and 3rd coats in the Cabot’s stain. As for durability: • Aquadeck is easier to maintain, quick-drying, and designed for re-coating without heavy sanding, but it typically requires more frequent re-application in high sun/rain exposure. • Cabot’s Deck & Exterior Stain tends to be more durable and longer lasting, especially in harsh conditions, because it penetrates deeply and gives stronger protection against UV and water. Recommendation: Stick with Cabot’s Deck & Exterior Stain for the remaining coats. It should give you better long-term protection for a deck that’s heavily exposed to the elements.

Hello this is Ross l have brought Cabot's aquadeck Merbau colour 4 Liters buy mistake and lost receipt l brought from Bunnings and asl can't return l have Cabot's aquadeck Natural Colour 3/4 tin 3 Litres if l mixed together what colour would l end up with ??? Thanks My Email address is rthomas6917@gmail.com regards Ross.
Hello Ross, Thank you for reaching out! We would not recommend mixing the two colours, as we would not be able to predict the final colour outcome, and it would be very difficult to replicate the colour if you needed more product now or for future coatings.
If you wanted to discuss further, please reach out on 1800 011 006

The instructions on the pail say "Do not apply...when rain is expected during the drying time." What is the drying time? 20 minutes? 1 hour? 7 days?
Hi Cliff H, Drying times can vary, but we recommend applying Cabot's Aquadeck within 48 hours of clear weather to avoid any disapointment! If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach our team on 1800 011 006. Wishing you the best with your project! Kaaren - The Cabot's Team
I have bought some cane stools. The cane on the new stools is much lighter than the stain on the chairs they are meant to match. I would like to stain the lighter stools to match. Which is the best product to use? Is the Cabot's Aqua deck stain suitable?
Hi Sally, it sounds like a great update. Please note, that due to the complex coating and finishing of cane, we haven't a recommended stain or varnish, it would be best to check with your local cane furniture supplier for their recommendation. We wish you all the best with your project! Kaaren - The Cabot's Team
Thanks so much Kaaran. I will do some test runs! Merry Christmas. Cheers, Sally
Hi,
I am looking for a suitable varnish for my outdoor table and other furniture that goes through the Qld weather which is wet at the moment. Currently have a Semco Teak Sealer on our teak furniture but looking for a Varnish that may be a bit more hardy.
Would Cabot's have a particular product or could I use the Exterior Clear or use the Aquadeck for the table and other furniture?
For outdoor furnitures I will recommend to use "Sadolin".It's an oil for hardwood, find in any paint shops or Bunnings. It rejuvenated the hold wood and protect for long time better than varnish, as over time the"UV" destroyed ant type of varnish. I use Sadolin for all my outdoor furnitures and I am very happy with it.
Hello Jon, Great question! When it comes to coating exterior furniture we would recommend using an oil rather than a varnish. Exterior varnishes are designed to be slightly flexible to allow the timber to expand and contract without cracking. Noting the weather conditions, we would recommend coating with our Aquadeck instead as it is our most durable exterior timber oil. If you have any more questions, please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006 and we can discuss all your project’s ins and outs! Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm AEST.

Hi there, I’ve got a deck with Cabot’s water based aquadeck applied to it in good condition, but I need to increase the slip resistance of the surface. I want to avoid stripping or sanding the decking back if at all possible. Is there a compatible product, coating or system that you can recommend that can be applied over the top of the aqua deck finish in order to significantly increase the slip resistance, especially in the wet? Thanks
Hi JMT, Thanks for getting in touch; this is a great question. To increase the slip resistance of your previously coated deck, we recommend adding our sister brand, Intergrain's Ultragrip Additive, to your Aquadeck before applying another coat. If it has been a while since you applied the previous Aquadeck coat, you will need to clean with Cabot's Deck Clean and then apply 2 coats of Aquadeck with the slip additive to renew the durability while increasing slip resistance. Please note that while this will give added slip resistance it won't be certified with a Slip Resistance Certificate. If you have any questions about this or any other woodcare projects, please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm AEST.

Thanks so much for the quick response. I’ve just double checked the product that I used and it is actually the Cabot’s water based deck and exterior stain ‘Blackburn’. Will the same solution work for this product? Thanks again, JMT
Hi JMT, No worries at all, this additive solution will also work in our Deck and Exterior Stain Water Based, just know that adding more stain will intensify the colour. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our technical team on the number above if you need further assistance. Kind regards, Team Cabot's
Hi My builder applied aquadeck stain to my new blackbutt deck and it has ruined the colour. It is now a cheap trashy orange colour. Can it be removed? Does the colour fade and how quickly? Can you recommend something which will not make it orange and preserve the original colour. Many thanks Jackie
Hi Jackie, We're sorry to hear about your experience with our Aquadeck. This product is designed to enhance the natural colours in the timber, as the pigment in exterior timber oils is what gives them UV resistance. Because Blackbutt decking is quite warm-toned, it is understandable that the enhanced colour would be orange. If you are interested in an oil with no pigment, we would recommend having a look at our sister brand Intergrain's Universal Timber Oil.

This clear product does not have as much UV resistance but will maintain the natural colour of your timber. We would suggest sanding to remove your current coat and be sure to test the new product on an offcut to ensure you are happy with the finish before committing to the whole surface. Please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006 if you would like to discuss this further, our technical experts are always happy to assist! Thanks. How does one sand the stain between the boards? I am concerned this product has ruined a very costly expansive deck.
Hi Jackie, It sounds like it would be best to reach out to our technical team in regards to the process from here. Please give us a call on 1800 011 006 so we can look into your concerns and find a resolution. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind Regards, Team Cabot's
Hi i want strip all previous aquadeck from my deck and start fresh its looking pretty ratty atm what is the best method to remove old aquadeck????
Hi Therese, great question! If your deck has started to get too weathered to be recoated, you would be best to sand it back to bare timber. This will give you not only the most consistent finish, but also the longest lasting. We recommend starting with sanding, followed by cleaning with Cabot's Deck Clean once the timber is sanded to prep it before applying Cabot's Aquadeck in the colour of your choice.

sanding with what equipment is easiest and quickest is really my ???
Hi Therese, The easiest way to sand the deck back is using a drum sander. This will make the process fast and less physically demanding. You can also use a finishing sander to do any of the finer edges and harder to reach areas. You should have no issues hiring a sander from your local hardware store. We hope this is helpful!

Hi - we used Aquadeck Exterior Decking Oil on a deck and the stairs coming off it. Apparently we need to ensure a sufficient anti-slip rating under the building code (basically P4 or P5 for this area which is not undercover). Our deck is rough sawn decking wood (blackbutt) for both the deck and stair treads. Do you have an example pendulum tests that give a typical P rating for natural decking boards with Aquadeck over them? A P-value for any wood/finish would be useful. Thanks, Pierre
Hi there Pierre, Unfortunately, we don't have a system we can recommend that will achieve the results you are after. We would encourage you to reach out to our technical team so we can suggest an alternative. Please contact us on 1800 011 006. Hi, Should I pressure hose between coats of Aquadeck water base stain, and does the deck need to be completely dry before application. Cheers Jeannette
Hello there Jeanette, Thank you for reaching out via Cabot’s Product Review. As long as you apply your next coat after 1-2 hrs of the first being applied, there is no need to pressure hose between coats of Cabot’s Aquadeck oil water based. However if you should leave the coated deck over night or a few days after that initial first coat – Then yes, a nice thorough hose down is ideal, just to remove any potential dust settlement or other contaminants that may have landed over the dry fresh coating.

Hi, have just applied 2 coats of Aquadeck to a Merbau deck. The product says leave for 7 days to fully cure but how long until it can be walked on (or let the dog on)?
Just like I mentioned in my review this paint is basically water, it does not matter how many paints we put on.
Hello Daniel, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your enquiry. Once our Aquadeck has fully cured, you can absolutely walk on it, replace furniture and allow the dog on it. As you mentioned, For the product to fully cure can take up to 7 days
