Cabot's Deck Clean Questions & Answers
VerifiedHi I plan on using Cabot's deck clean before oiling my deck however I don't have a high pressure washer and was wondering if a normal garden hose will work?
Hello Mary H., Great question! Thanks for reaching out with your enquiry. You can use a normal garden hose, yes, to rinse off the Cabot’s Deck Clean after scrubbing vigorously with a brush or broom. If you need more information or advice, please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006! Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm AEST. Hi I have just sanded a 7 year old merbau deck and it has come up really nice naturally with the original stain mostly gone. However when I wet the deck to clean it before oiling, I noticed black scratch marks re-appeared everywhere. Obviously they were there prior to sanding but once I sanded they weren't noticeable and I thought they were gone. I'm presuming once I oil the deck they'll stand out again. They are like black scratch marks from dragging metal furniture across the deck. I can't sand them out. After sanding with a 40, 60 and 120 grit they're still there. The surface feels nice and smooth. So I'm wondering what product (if any) I can use to get rid of them before I oil the deck.
Hi Mary, Thank you for reaching out regarding the black marks on your merbau deck. To help resolve this, please contact our Technical Support team on 1800 011 006 and quote ticket number 1217361 The team would like to ask a few specific questions about your deck so they can provide the best possible assistance. Kind regards, Donna Cabots
I am using the deck clean on my outdoor setting will it damage the pavers under my table?
Hi Don, Using our Deck Clean of your exterior table is a great way to prep it for coating! That being said, it is likely that it would mark the pavers, so we would recommend avoiding this. Please feel free to give us a call on 1800 011 006 if you wish to discuss all your project further! Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm AEST.

Hi, I'd like to freshen up our log fence. It is made of ironbark, and has Long-life blue fence chicken wire on the posts to make up the fence. Because I'm going from Cabot's Natural Decking Oil to Cabot's Jarrah Aquadeck, I will use Cabot's Deck Clean due to patchy discolouring over the past 12 months, especially on the vertical logs. My question is will the Deck Clean affect the Long-life blue wire if I follow the Clean instructions?
Hello Brendan, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your enquiry. This one is a little tricky. We would recommend instead of using our Deck Clean, that you have a look at our sister brand Intergrain's Garden Safe Ultraprep Timber Cleaner. This product is less likely to damage your chicken wire, especially if you hose off the metal after applying the cleaner to the fence. It is best not to let it sit, the same way we encourage for the timber.

Hi I have timber outdoor chairs that have greyed over time. Will the Cabot’s deck clean take them back to their natural color? Ta
Hello Catherine, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your enquiry. Deck Clean would bring some natural colour back to your outdoor timber chairs. Once cleaned, you can apply a fresh coat of oil, stain or paint and keep them protected from the harsh UV.

Hi, I need to re-oil a deck that is above a paved area. Will Cabot's deck cleaner stain the pavers underneath when the existing oil is being removed? Regards Rob
Hello Robert, Thank you for reaching out to us via Product Review with your enquiry. Please hose down the area underneath your deck first, then place the lightweight plastic down over the expanse to protect the area. Once you've rinsed the deck down thoroughly - Rinse the plastic also and then remove to rinse the pavers.

1} Does Deck Clean damage pebblecrete if it gets on to it? 2) How quickly will Deck Cleaner damage a metal drainage grill? 3) Does Deck Cleaner damage concrete if it gets onto it? Thanks
Hello Annemarie, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your enquiry. We do not recommend allowing this product onto these surfaces, as it is specifically designed for timber. It will not effect metal, as long as it is not on the surface for long and it is diluted. If you are concerned about surrounding areas of your outdoor timber, we recommend hosing down these areas before using the product in order to avoid undiluted surface contact.

I have used exterior timber pollyfilla all along in portions of an outdoor timber table top & legs, as well as parts of the timber chairs. All surfaces, both timber & exterior timber polyfilla surfaces have all been completely sanded for staining with Cabots Deck & Exterior Stain waterbased. Will scrubbing the Cabots Deck Clean into, which can't be missed exterior timber pollyfilla, cause damage to it? If so I will it be better to just stain without?
Hello Luke, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. It is a little tricky to assess if the Deck Clean will damage the Polyfilla. Our Deck Clean is a product with a high acid content and most Fillers are an alkaline surface like plaster. We recommend discussing this with the Poly Experts, who are available on the Poly website.

I used the deck clean. Some overspray has left a milky film on the black house paint (Resene low sheen paint on Shadowclad). It was a cloudy day and did not dry before I hosed it off. How doI remove this?
I had the same issue. No amount of elbow grease would remove it. We ended up getting out the paint and touching up the areas.
Hello Wayne and Linda Z, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. This can be from the Deck Clean not being rinsed off the surface if it was missed and can draw out the resin binder in certain water-based acrylic exterior paints, which can be noticed more over darker colours. The Deck Clean will not have affected the structural integrity, just caused an unsightly mark. Unfortunately, this is not able to be removed, but it can be painted over. We recommend giving it a good clean and allowing the Shadowclad to dry before painting.

Hi, Looking to clean my deck with Cabot's deck clean. I have 2 small dogs who access the area regularly to go outside. What time frames should I keep them away from the area? I.e. is it safe after I've washed the deck down post application of deck cleaner or do I need to keep them out for 24 hours/longer?
Hello there Sally W, Thank you for reaching out via Cabot’s Product Review. Great to see you’re maintaining your exterior deck via Cabot’s Deck Clean. Generally, the Deck Clean application only requires 10-15mins of surfactant standing time over your deck surface, after scrubbing the solution over the hosed-down wet expanse. After that standing time, you simply pressure wash the Deck Clean solution away thoroughly and allow the clean timber deck to dry. How long your timber deck takes to dry is determined by how large the overall area is, the porosity of the timber, the condition of the deck, and its location. As a general guide – Most timber decking should be thoroughly dry after 24hrs. However - There are certainly days when your deck expanse might dry much faster than that.
So, as long as the deck surface is touch dry or even a little damp, you should be able to have your small dogs enjoying their usual deck adventures. Preferably with a protective Cabot’s decking oil or stain over it.

I would not use it on anything other than wood it contains an acid that will damage other surfaces
Hello Eilis, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. Cabot's Deck Clean is specifically formulated for preparing exterior timber surfaces. It contains Oxalic Acid which we definitely do not recommend using on any surface other than timber.

Does deckclean damage windoes and flyscreens if they get any overspray when the deck is cleaned?
Deck Clean is an acid based product you should protect all areas not meant to be cleaned use a paint brush or roller for intricate areas it will burn and damage surrounding areas found out the hard way
Could it melt metal fly screens?
Hello Melissa Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. It is important to protect any garden beds, concrete, and painted surfaces from overspray with plastic drop sheets when giving your deck a recoat. That being said, Cabot's Deck Clean will not melt metal flyscreens.

Hi, I have a small lemon tree very near to steps that I am intending to wash with Cabot's deck wash. Will the deck wash damage the lemon tree? Thanks. Gael
Hello there Gael, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. The Cabot’s Deck Clean dilution is generally not an issue with most plants but as a precaution, we do recommend hosing down the area thoroughly first. Then place some lightweight painter's plastic over the saturated area you wish to protect (Lemon Tree and surrounds). Once you have waited the 10-15mins of Deck Clean dilution scrubbed into your timber stairs, give the entire surface area a thorough pressure wash down away from you tree if possible. Then take the protective plastic away and give the lemon tree and surrounds a final hose down for good measure.

I have a deck that had quite serious fading & mould in some areas i had applied your product with 3 years ago.i used your deck wash as per instructions & still there was still mould & the faded areas were more more obvious, but still? Applied 2 coats of cabots water based decking finish..a/ after an hour drying time b/ two coats in two hours. The finish was bad. Next day it rained & now it is worse, mould is more obvious, faded areas more obvious and the decking coats are streaking & slimy. What do you ?
Cheryl sounds like your decking may need treatment with a biocide to kill the mould do not use bleach- use the correct biocide products according to directions- then serious fading - this sounds like you need to sand the decking to reveal the wood grain and colour again once that is done then 2 coats noting decking is something that needs annual maintenance this then prevents serious fading, unfortunately there is no easy method to restore the decking
Hello Cheryl, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review with your inquiry. It is a little tricky to assess what may have happened here over this platform. Whenever mould is present in timber, we always recommend using our sister brand Intergrain product Ultraprep Mould Killer. If the mould is quite severe, it may take more than one use to completely remove the mould. After this, I suggest sanding to remove any patchy finish, then you can apply Deck Clean, then either an oil, stain or paint once the deck is dry.

Hi I have a two story Queenslander with decks all around it and under the decks painted white with an outdoor area lower floor. I am wanting to clean the top decks and re oil- but concerned about the paint & pavers underneath- what is the best way to go about this?
The product does say to wash off if it gets on to any surface. We have a white painted house as well. Where we missed spots you can clearly see where the product has stained. As we used a scrubbing brush on the it did flick a lot of the product onto the walls. Good luck.
Hello there Sharon d, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. We recommend it best to first hose down any garden beds, plants, or surface area you wish to protect before applying the Cabot's Deck Clean dilution. After hosing down, place some lightweight painter's plastic sheeting over any flat surface area underneath the deck being coated, as well as any direct wall surface areas below that might be affected by the wash down and coating process. You can weigh down the plastic sheets with lengths of timber, spare bricks if any, or tape down with painter's tape. After you have applied the Cabot's Deck Clean to the above deck expanse, be sure to also hose down the entire area below it that's covered in the plastic sheeting, being sure all is rinsed off thoroughly. Once the deck for coating has been rinsed clean and dry - You can begin your Cabot's deck protective oil coating by two-three coats in colour of choice.

Hi will cabots deckwash damage /react sandstone pavers below our deck
Hello there Randwick, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. It's best to first hose down any bare or painted hard surface or garden area that is not to be cleaned, and then place light weight painters plastic over the top, for the added barrier. If you do get some of the Deck Clean dilution over any surface not for cleaning, just a matter of attending to it quickly with a garden hose on pressure spray setting to rinse away thoroughly. Please note - This also applies to Cabot's New Timber Prep wash down product.
