I know you say metalshield does not require a clear coat - but even so, can I spray an enamel clear coat over it ?

Martin D
Martin D

I wanted to check whether MetalShield Epoxy Enamel is really an epoxy, in that it contains an epoxide group, or if the word "epoxy" means something else. I'm going to be using Metalshield Epoxy Enamel to paint a metal surface. That surface will be, in places, coated in 2 part epoxy. Knowing whether Metalshield Epoxy Enamel is a real epoxy will determine when I can apply the 2 part epoxy.

Ben A.
Ben A.

The word epoxy is very misleading on behalf of Dulux, the term epoxy only represents the solids inside the paint, the binder is 1k, please find my review, paint will not dry, can't be handled for over a week and still does not achieve anything close to a full cure

I have treated the underneath of a vehicle for rust with Ranex Rust Buster. After drying I high pressure washed it all but after the wahing dried there is still a white residue from the Ranex in hard to get places. Can I reasonably successfully spray paint over this with Dulux Metal Shield Epoxy Enamel?

Robert J.
Robert J.

The white powder is the residue from the treatment process and should be thin and well bonded to the surface Metal Shield can be applied over this and will bond to the metal surface. Metal Shield cannot be applied over heavy deposits or thick residue, greasy surfaces or wet seams as it cannot bond to the metal surfaces.

What's a suitable primer for top-coating SS304 with Metalshield Epoxy Enamel that also has a temperature rating of ~120°C?

Xavier A.

"HEAT RESISTANCE Up to 65°C dry heat" would make Metalshield® Etch Primer unsuitable for many outdoor applications? So what do I use?

Can metalshield epoxy enamel gloss be rubbed back(wet sanded) then cut and polished? I’m repairing the paint work on my camper trailer.

Robert J.
Robert J.

YES , but ensure the paint has fully cured, so I would paint it and allow a full week of cure time before wet sanding. The spray cans produce a finish that really is OEM gloss and probably don’t need polishing if applied lightly in multiple coats to build your finish.

Wanting to paint steel tray. Has some heavy rust in places which has been removed by a needle gun. going to etch prime, and top coat with metal shield, should I add a hardener?

Robert J.
Robert J.

Neutralise the remaining rust first with a tannin based rust control spray, prime if you wish, then use the metal shield from the can. Allow it to flow onto the surface and do not over brush or roll the paint. It will self level and does not need a hardener as epoxy based paints harden very well over a 48 hr period but don’t load the tray for 72 hours

Can I applymetalshoeld epoxy enamel straight over a prepared oil based enamel?

Robert J.
Robert J.

NO- that would be a mistake Oil based paints have a certain level of adhesion and durability but the epoxy enamel has much higher adhesion potential and durability as the epoxy formulation will cure and harden ( and shrink) whereas the enamel paints simply dry by air exposure and then loose their oil content to heat and sun exposure to fail by breaking down over time. Sand back the enamel paint heavily before applying the metal shield paint.

How long should you wait after using the etch primer spray can to apply the epoxy enamel paint (spray can as well), there seem to be a variety of answers on here?

Peter
Peter

I applied the etch primer, it dries pretty quickly, so then only about 4-5 minutes after, before it flash dried then applied the top coat. This allowed the top coat to grab into the slightly damp primer. This is to avoid totally separate dry coats that can separate & flake from sunlight etc.

Dulux
Dulux   DM

Hi Temp Name, For Dulux Etch Primer Spray, recoat time is 1 hour (for 25°C at 50% relative humidity) but please allow longer for cooler or more humid conditions. If you need more help along the way, you can also reach out to us on 13 25 25 (option 2) to get you on track!

Hi. Just would like to know if I can spray metal shield of epoxy through a graco hvlp and what needle is recommended. The surface i need to spray is powder coated and then finished with an epoxy gloss, clear coating. All I need to do is change the colour.

Dulux
Dulux   DM

Hi Radenko, Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel can indeed be sprayed! Head to our website below where you can check out the Product Datasheet for our application guide! As for needles, you may need to contact your spray gun manufacturer for their recommendation. external link

Hi. I've cleaned, primed and painted steel bars with metalshield epoxy enamel. The finished surface has to be tolerant to constant wiping with mild detergent wipes. What clear coat can I finish with and will it help with durability?

Dulux
Dulux   DM

Hi Phil, Dulux Metalshield Epoxy Enamel is a top-coat design, and we do not recommend applying clear coats to this paint. Additional coats of the epoxy will improve durability, and any clear coats may react and cause issues down the track. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to us on 13 25 25 and we'll help you with your project! - Dulux Australia

Dulux

Hi Nunzio, Great news, sanding is not required between coats, unless there is a roughness after the first coat (for example if the substrate had quite a bit of texture). Hi Wondering if you can help? I want to paint zincalume c purlings that are outside and have been there for a few years unpainted and I'm confused as to whether they require undercoating/priming proir to using dulux metalshield epoxy (ironstone) as the finished result Regards Nick

Dulux
Dulux   DM

Hi Nick! For coating zincalume, you will need to use an etch primer. Please clean surface with sugar soap and a Scotch-Brite Pad to remove any grease, oils and dirt, then rinse with clean water. Once dry, apply 1 coat of Metalshield RFU Etch Primer. If you'd like any further help with your project, please feel free to contact us on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we'd be more than happy to help! Can you use a paint additive such as Floetrol to Dulux Metalshield paint to increase drying time and workability. I have tried using Metal Shield (thinned with Dulux Brush Thinner) with Industrial Mini Rollers but they tend to come apart quite quickly.

I bought 1L of Duluth metalshield epoxy enamel tinted bright yellow in May 2022. I opened it yesterday and it had a brown gelatinous layer on top that dispersed into small granules on stirring. It’s unusable. Can it be restored to usable and if so how? or do I need to buy a new one.
