Dulux Precision Sealer Binder Questions & Answers
VerifiedIm dealing with flaking old paint back to the white set plaster in some areas of my room. Do I spot apply the sealer binder only on affected areas - or do I use sealer binder over my whole wall including the old existing paint?
Hi Kahlia It’s important to ensure all loose or flaking paint is completely removed prior to sealing. As set plaster is highly porous, spot application of Dulux Precision Sealer Binder can result in an uneven finish. For best results, we recommend sealing the entire wall to ensure uniform absorption and an even appearance of the topcoat, without visible variations where spot sealing has occurred. I have applied Dulux precision oil based sealer binder over an old solid plaster wall which was previously painted but then had very many new repairs with topping coat plaster and was pretty dusty. The binder has dried Matt on the repairs but glossy on the old paint. What should I do before top coating with Matt acrylic paints?

Hi, should I do one or two coats of sealer and binder oil base on white set plaster in a new home?
Hi Nicole S. Thank you for reaching out. Once the plaster has fully cured (please follow the manufacturer's instructions), we recommend one coat of Dulux Precision Sealer Binder. If the surface is still chalky, to touch, then it will need a second coat. The Dulux Technical Team are available if you'd like further assistance 13 25 25 (option 2). All the very best with your renovations! Kaaren - The Dulux Team
The smell is sooooo bad. How long till it goes away?
Hello Naomi B. Thank you for your question. This is a water based product, so with good ventilation, the odour should start to lower quite quickly. However, some form of odour can linger for the full cure time of 7-10 days. Ventilation and good weather is key to the odour leaving quite quickly.
For further advice please contact our Help & Advice team on 132525 Option 2.
Can you thin it out if it gets too gluey like other paint?
Hello Danel,
Thank you for your question.
A poor consistency may mean more than an effect on the consistency. Best to chat with our technical team so we can investigate further for you. Please call the team on 13 25 25 Option 2.

Hi, I sealed the raw plaster with one coat dulux sealer binder couple of years ago, as the builder suggested not to paint immediately, so I waited for two years. It has some stain marks on the wall. Do I need to redo one more coat of Sealer Binder and then paint it over it?
Hi there, It can depend on what sort of stains are on the walls, since different stains may need special treatment. Please give our technical team a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we'll help you with this! Cheers, Dulux Australia
They are very small stain marks, which has gone after I cleaned with sugar soap. But, do I need to do another coat of sealer binder, since I only did one coat of sealer binder. If I need to do the second coat of sealer binder, can I use water based sealer binder or low Voc primer?
If the stains can be removed, another coat of PRECISION Sealer Binder may be beneficial, but we would need to know more about your project before giving the best advice. Please give our team a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) or reach out to us on our website.
Hi! Quick question: is Dulux Prepcoat Acrylic Sealer Undercoat (Ultra smooth technology) ok to seal new hard set plaster interior walls? The walls are shiny and smooth to the touch - not chalky at all. Bunnings recommended this product but reading these comments I'm thinking should I exchange it for the oil based Dulux Precision Sealer Binder? It is not paper faced plasterboard or gyprock compound. Thanks in advance :)
Hi JMacka, Great question! For hard set plaster we would still generally recommend Dulux Precision Sealer Binder, but we'd love to know about your project to get you back on the right path! Please give us a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) to chat with our technical team. Thanks, Lucy at Dulux
The builders of my house sprayed on a thin coat of acrylic with, apparently, no pri er so the paint cones off under slight pressure or knock. Will painting with the precision sealer binder solve this problem so that re-painting will adhere better to the wall?
Hi Kate, We're so sorry to hear, but we can help you with this! After removing all peeling and flaking paint, you will need to prime, but before choosing a primer we will need to understand the type of plaster you have first. Please give our friendly technical team a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we will help find the right Precision Primer for your home to get the best result! We look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks, Dulux Australia
Have already undercoat my concrete ceiling , can I apply binder before applying top coat?

Please give our friendly team a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we'll get your project back on track! We look forward to hearing from you soon! Thanks, Dulux Australia
Living in WA and having hard wall plastered walls I have applied the dulux PRECISION Sealer Binder oil based. My question is can I now paint my walls with dulux water based paints?

I live in WA so have purchased the sealer binder and applied one coat to our home theatre walls. I was advised that I could mix some of the water based top coat into the second coat of sealer to help with colour coverage (dark colour choice). Is this true or should I just apply second coat as is?
The Dulux Sealer binder is an oil-based product and water based colour paint won't be absorbed in the second coat. I would just go with a second coat as it will cover easily over the first and ensure a good base for water based top coat. Ring up the Dulux hot line for advise. They are excellent.
Hi Rebecca, Good question! As Brian has mentioned, we do not recommend doing this, as the bases for the two paints are different. For your top coats, we recommend three coats to achieve the best coverage and finish for home theatres. If yo have any other questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we'd love to help you on your painting journey! Good luck and happy painting! -Lucy at Dulux
Hi, I live in WA and have plaster walls. Can I use Dulux Sealer, Primer undercoat instead of the precision sealer binder? I made the mistake of buying the first one
Hi Craig, Thanks for asking! In WA, you will need to use the Dulux Precision Sealer Binder and not the primer sealer undercoat on plaster walls. If you have any other questions that we can assist with, you can always reach out to our team on 13 25 25 (option 2). Thanks and happy painting! - Lucy at Dulux
Hi, I’ve applied the sealer over dry plaster on my ceiling and walls, and after 36 hrs parts of it are still a little tacky on the ceiling. It’s about 15 deg c. Is there something I should to do help it dry off, or just wait? Also, for the walls, should I sand before applying the topcoats?
Hi Mike, Great question! With cooler temperatures, you will need to allow longer for drying. You can try to seed the process with some gentle heaters and air movement, but you may need to be cautious not to heat too closely or quickly, as you may experience issues if it dries too quickly. For advice tailored to your environmental situation, it may be best to chat with our technical team who will get you back on track! Please give us a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we will be able to help. We look forward to speaking with you soon! Thanks, Lucy at Dulux
Would Precision Sealer Binder be the correct product to prime over well-sanded polyurethane on a timber vanity unit? Thanks.
Hi David, Thanks for your question! Dulux Precision Sealer Binder is great for chalkier surfaces, but we have other paints in the Precision range, such as Dulux Precision Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer that may be better suited. A thorough sand and two coats of this would be a better application, but you may be best to chat with our technical team on 13 25 25 (option 2) to ensure you get the best results. Good luck and Happy Painting! - Lucy at Dulux
I have just applied a coat of Dulux Precision Sealer Binder to a plaster ceiling. Can I apply the topcoats directly over the sealer-binder or is an undercoat required?
Hi David, After applying Dulux Precision Sealer Binder, you're ready to go with Dulux Ceiling White - no undercoat required! If you need any further help with your project, feel free to give us a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) to get you on your way! Happy Painting! - Lucy at Dulux
Hi, after the recent wet and damp weather, the timber beams behind our (dark painted) plastered wall, now show leaching through, so we can see the lines of the beams at 1200 high etc along the wall. Can I use the Precision stain blocker over the already painted wall? Could I just paint the stain blocker over the areas that are showing, or do I have to do the whole wall? Will this work? If so, can I get Precision tinted? Given it's a very dark grey wall... Thanks heap Erica
Hi Erica, Great question! For tannin bleeding with timber beams, you would be best to use Dulux Precision Smoke, Stain and Odour Blocker. This is not a water-based stain blocker but shellac based, but you can use this over already painted surfaces. You can spot this over the areas of concern or paint the whole wall, both will work! Please note we do not recommend tinting these as it can dilute the performance of the blocking, but you can paint over with Dulux Wash & Wear in your favourite Dulux colour. If you are not familiar with shellac-based paints, you can always speak with our friendly team on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we will get you back on track! Happy Painting! -Lucy at Dulux
OMG! Thank you Lucy! That's a great help. And thank you for your prompt response too. Erica
