What is the best primer to use on MDF wood (interior) before applying coats of Super enamel semi gloss? Will it be required to sand the MDF before applying the primer?

Hi Renee, Thanks for reaching out. Our friendly technical team can help you with that, since it can depend on the condition of the MDF and where it is going to be used. Please call us on 13 25 25 (option 2) and our team can recommend the best primer for your project. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

So long as is clean and dust free just sand the edges with 180 or 240 grit paper and any sharp corners if required. Any oil or water based primer will do. Waterbased primers are more likley to make the grain pop up as a result of moisture being absorbed by the wood fibres. Edges may need multiple coats as they wil absorb more primer. If you want a really slick finish consider 2 coats of primer before using the expensive top coat. The trick is to sand it all down with something like 240 grit paper after you have primed to get it nice and smooth. Any bumps or areas rough to the touch will show up through the semi gloss top coat so make sure its as perfect and smooth as you would like it before applying the finishing coats.

Hi TradeWest, Thanks for the advice, we always recommend a good sand of MDF before painting, but we do not recommend using water-based primers under oil-based enamel paints, as this can speed the yellowing process and cause issues with sealing the MDF. Please contact our technical team on 13 25 25 (option 2) so we can give the correct advice on the best products before starting your painting project. We look forward to hearing from you soon! I have just finished using black semi gloss super enamel on exterior door trims. This was the paint recommended by Bunnings in Ballina because I didn’t want full gloss. The staff member was told that it will be under cover if a verandah but will be in full hot sun in winter. Have I bought the wrong paint. I’ll be very disappointed if I have, it looks great

Hi Linda DULUX Super Enamel Semi Gloss is an oil based, hard-wearing, long-life finish suitable for all interior surfaces. Unfortunately, the Bunnings Paint Team has offered you the incorrect product. We would suggest that you take the remaining product back to your place of purchase and discuss with the Paint Team a replacement product for your project. Regards, The Dulux Team

Can you apply super enamel semi gloss over a finished aquanamel surface without an undercoat in between?

Dulux

Hi Joe, Thanks for your question. If the surface is in good condition, then no undercoat is needed. Ensure the surface it is clean and free from oils and grease. Give the surface a light sand and dust down. Then apply 2 coats of Dulux Super Enamel.

Good luck with your project!

Why does it take two coats to obtain optimum finish?

Many many years ago I used Dulux oil gloss (using semi gloss) and one coat was enough

Hi Mike, we always recommend the application of two coats to any surface to achieve complete opacity and a smooth, glossy finish. If a thick coat is applied, you may get a finish close to this however, a single thick coat is not recommended as it is likely to sag.
