Hi there, I've applied 2 coats of the tung oil blend to my floors. I didnt wipe off the excess because I didn't want to walk on the floors while they were wet. Now there are areas that are shiny and areas that are matte. Do you recommend applying more coats or sanding?? Cheers, James

Hi James, Sorry to hear about the patchiness in the sheen. This has likely been caused by different penetration rates across the surface of the timber. The ideal course of action would be to sand back, reapply, and ensure that any excess is wiped off. I did, that's where I got the information about your product, Got no real help 18 months later tenants out, I am now wet sanding with a floor polisher and 80 grit discs because I perceive from the information given to sell China Wood Oil as Tung oil was misleading

Hi I’ve used your floorseal before and liked the satin finish it gives but didn’t realise that you changed the formula in the Tung oil so there’s not enough gloss level can I put a satin finish over it cheers

Hello there Rabbits, Thank you for reaching out via Feast Watson Product Review. I believe we may have possibly already covered this for you via our Feast Watson Live Chat service online recently, but just in case, please see below for advice.

The previous Feast Watson Tung Oil and FloorSeal products have been discontinued and replaced with the versatile Feast Watson Timber Floor Oil which is a blended Tung Oil that has great coverage dispersion, as well as layering and buffing quality once dry. To achieve a slightly higher sheen finish you can buff the dry oil coated surface finish (300 revs/minute) using a hand or walk behind soft buffer machine which can be hired if needed. external link

We don't recommend applying a surface sitting barrier film(Varnish) in Satin over the penetrating dry Timber Floor Oil, as it's blended oil that has migrating formulation in order to form that protective surface barrier over the floor as it cures while providing the option for buffing to a Satin sheen if desired.

For this or any future timber projects, feel free to give our Feast Watson Help & Advice team a call on 1800 252 502 Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm AEST.

I have done most of my house with your Floorseal and am disappointed to find it has now been discontinued. I had planned to sand a high wear area and recoat. Normally this would be an easy job and the recoated section would blend in with the rest and be completely unnoticeable. Can I now use floor oil for this, and will it blend in, since it is matt and the rest is satin? I have just done another room with the floor oil and I think it looks dead and lifeless. Don't understand why you would discontinue a product that was perfect.

Is Feast Watson Tung Oil as sold by Bunnings pure tung or does it contain other ingredients?

hamic

It is not pure. The safety data sheet for the product indicates some of the ingredients: Naphtha (petroleum), hydrotreated heavy 30 - 60% Turpentine (Wood) 1 - 10% d-Limonene 1 - 10% Ingredients determined to be non-hazardous Balance

I think the first 3 would be used as thinners to make application easier (pure tung oil is typically thinned for application) that I expect would evaporate off in the drying process. I expect the last one includes tung oil and possibly other things but I can't be certain. The bunnings website says "Contains genuine tung oil". But no idea what percentage is genuine tung oil.

I bought Feast watsons tung oil to be used on the kitchen bench. The info I got on the net was that Tung oil is safe to use on food prep areas. The oil is a extracted from the kernels of the tung oil tree Please tell me if this is correct and that feast watsons product is pure Tung oil and not mixed with any toxic products!

i would not use tung oil on a timber bench top , use glass finish instead . On chopping boards a little bit of vegetable oil is fine .

Hi guys, iam restoring a maple hardwood bell bros antique display cabinet from early 1900s, will this product be ok, or should I be looking at something else, Cheers Anthony

Feast Watson

Hi Anthony, Without understanding what it's currently coated in, it is hard to advise. For pieces that are really old, there may be a variety of coatings already on it. Sometimes the coatings can be restored (if you know what is on it), otherwise it may need to be stripped or sanded back to bare.

Feast Watson Tung Oil is a fully penetrating oil that would need the surface of the timber to be completely bare from any previous coatings. As it penetrates the surface of the timber, it doesn't leave a protective film on the surface, giving a very natural appearance.

Another products to consider for your project is Feast Watson Fine Buffing Oil. This can be applied to bare or previously coated timber, and buffed to the desired sheen level.

Is this pure tung oil, or blended with something else?

Feast Watson
Feast Watson   DM

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your question. Feast Watson Tung Oil is blended with solvents to make it more user friendly. Pure Tung Oil on its own is very sticky and difficult to apply. If you have any further questions, please call us on 1800 252 502.

It is for a bee hive, so wanted to make sure it won't affect the bees. Would the solvents in it affect them?
