What is the best product to clean my previously coated deck before reapplying spa n deck.

I have a lovely jarrah deck which i want to sand back and recoat, what would be the best coating for a natural finish? we previously tried a couple of products which completely changed the colour of the timber instead of enhancing the jarrah.

Hi. My merbau decking looked great with Spa-n deck for the first few years with regular reapplications. Then one year it didnt go well and was patchy and uneven as if I had waited too long for recoating. It’s now 5 years on and I need to remove all the old product and start again. How do I remove the old product the easiest way? Out of the sun , along the house it’s still great and nearly impossible to move. Do i use a stripper or do I sand? If I sand will the sander effect the galvanised nails and then cause bleeding and ugly black marks when I reseal. Please advise which way I should go.

I've just applied the third coat to a new spotted gum deck. Went very well and is now drying. I have a very worn wooden outside table. It's stained brown but the underlying timber is a light colour. I would like to refinish with Spa-N-Deck (I have a lot left). What I need to do is stain the timber first. What sort of stain should I use. Thanks. Neil

I want to re coat my deck with spa N deck. Previously coated with same about 3 years ago. Do I need to use power lift or other product prior to reapplication or should i just give it a clean with the power washer.

I re coat every 18 months. I power wash, scrub dirty areas and coat (2 coats on horizontal surfaces). The powerlift is for uncoated timber to release tannins and open up fibres for the initial coats to penetrate so shouldn't be needed.

How long does the final coat take to dry? 30hrs now and still tacky in good drying weather

Paul

I found it can take 2 or 3 days to be totally tack free

Thanks, that's a bit longer than I expected.

Does flood spa and deck leach or stain after drying like other deck oils do?

leighb

No. SpaNDeck is water based and cures like a urethane.

Flood spa and deck. Is 24 hours sufficient soaking- in time, into Kwila hand rails, between first " wet' coat and second dry coat.

leighb

After the cleaning, detannin & pressure rinse stages, you put the first coat on while still wet. After the first coat, I put the second and third coats on as soon as it is surface dry (usually an hour).

LeighB. 2nd coat applied. Bom radar says an afternoon storm . Will apply 3rd coat, following morning. Question. Would you apply a 4th coat ?

Is there a need to strip last year's SnD before recoating this year or just clean it up? It's in good condition, just looks a little dull after 16 months of sea air and full sun.

helen
helen

i do not like the product its too orange and a bit too solid ie almost like a paint rather than transparent. That's probably one of the reasons it looks dull. My deck that i used it on is the same and its mostly undercover. What is not undercover did not last long.

I would sand it back or strip and then re coat with Haymes (Australian Made) water based deck product. You still have to reapply regularly.

Thanks Helen. Thing is, I like the look, and the product. On my deck the "orange" disappears fairly quickly and it's a nice colour for the rest of the year. Still wondering what prep might be needed.

Does anyone know of any suppliers in Brisbane. The flood website lists bunnings and a number of others but this information is out of date. Bit concerned that if I use this I won't be able to get more when I need to re-apply.

I used spa n deck on my veranda and was extremely pleased with the results. I had an out door setting which I painted with left over paint, I would like to freshen it up so what can I use in place of spa n deck as I no longer live at the other address and don't require a large amount of paint. Thank you for your assistance

Hi. Where can I buy this product please. Also what kind of applicator is recommended?

Thanks...sydneymidge

DIY yes

Paint Spot has it I joined as a member and got a 10% trade discount... they will know what applicator that is best for your deck I think it is a brush for the outside bits by hand then a mop type applicator for the middle bits.

I just bought some from Paint City. I know Mitre10 used to sell it but not sure now but Paint City was cheaper. As DIY says I use a brush for the edges and a decking oil applicator for the large areas.

I should have mentioned I live in Sydney on lower north shore. I'll check out our specialist paint stores. Re your tip on doing the ends, these are inaccessible to me as they finish under a timber wall and so are unreachable. Looks like I need a professional to carry out the work. Might be cheaper to take a couple of world trips. LOL.

Thanks very much for your reply and tips.

We sell it and we're located in St. Leonards, right near the hospital and Tesla. We also sell applicators for decking. Check us out, you won't be disappointed. Open from 7am-3pm.

Hi,

I stained my merbau deck with Flood Spa-N-Deck merbau colour. The colour turned out to be an orange brown but I wanted something darker, a dark red brown. Can I apply a Jarrah stain colour on top to achieve the desired colour?

Thanks!

Jeff C - Australia

I am not really qualified to answer this but, logically I think you would get the desired effect by applying a darker coloured Flood Spa-N-Deck of the same type of product. For a qualified answer I strongly suggest you contact Flood Australia for proper advise external link

I would give them a call on their phone number and say you are not happy that the colour that doesn't match what was on the tin. I had a similar thing and hated, hated the unnatural orange colour, a guy popped out and looked at it and gave me a formula for tinting the next batch to get the colour I wanted. Then I went to the paint shop and they mixed it up for me. When I got it back it sort of looked a dark greenie brown colour but when I popped on the next coat it was much better, more natural. Also big thing - the intensity of the colour does pull back over time.

Get them to come up with a tint formula for you, I was pleased I went back for their advice as they know how to tweak the colours.

Not qualified to answer but as the other users have indicated its best to go back to Flood with this question. I found them very helpful. I used the natural colour so I don't really know about tints.

We did a similar thing on Merbau with the natural finish. It was disappointingly orange! Although not happy with the colour, we were very happy with the finish and it was still good two years on. Subsequent 3 coats applied using the redwood and we are really happy with the colour. Will be recoating again in redwood this spring. Hope this helps.

How does this product stand up to dog urine etc please...is another product better? (6 month old untreated spotted gum deck)

Milord

Hi Craig, Unfortunately, I can't really tell you whether it can or not, as we don't have pets so I don't think I can give you a good answer. Other than just perhaps contact Flood Australia on 13 16 86 or email them on technical@floodaustralia.com.

Surely, someone there should help you out.

Thanks.

I have 2 dogs and 1 cat haven't had any issues. My previous dog urinated and pooped on the deck a few times as she was incontinent from old age, and I washed it off. I think 6 months is a little long to go without treating your deck so you might want to get onto that pronto.

How does Spa N Deck handle the North Qld tropical weather conditions and also being on a deck, part of which is in the direct sun for 5/6 hours per day and the balance is almost fully shaded in comparison to other decking treatments. My hardword deck was treated originally with Sikkens when it was built about 10 years ago on the advice of a builder mate. From my experience elsewhere in Australia, Sikkens is a great decking product in milder climates but struggles with the hot sun of northern Australia as it bakes on like a ceramic and is almost impossible to remove by convential sanding methods and difficult to maintain. The maintence requirements are also far greater than is claimed for this climate which makes it expensive in the long term.

Your comment appreciated

symowallo
symowallo

I can't say I'm an expert, but it is guaranteed and it is developed in Australia. Sikkens is a European brand whereas Spa 'N Deck is locally developed so I can only assume it'd be fine in tropical weather conditions as it is developed for Australian conditions. I have re-coated my deck 18 months after it was originally applied without any problems. I tested by lightly sanding some boards and not sanding the others - just using the Flood Powerlift product. Very little difference from what I can see, so from a maintenance point of view I'm very happy with it.

I'm not a fan of the Sikkens products because 1. They're oil based, and 2. They look fantastic but I've never seen one last as long as the Flood system - but I'm no builder, I don't see *that* many decks. I know that builders like Sikkens because they can build the deck, apply Sikkens then walk away because it looks great for about 3 to 6 months. Spa 'N Deck tends to look a little less "shiny/glossy" than Sikkens, but from what I have seen it does last longer. I would guess in your climate you'd be re-applying it a little more often though.

I've found their tech support quite helpful too - check their website and post a question - sometimes their Managing Director even responds.

My deck has previously been treated with a decking stain for many years. Can I use the 3 step Flood Spa n deck treatment on it, or should it be treated with a paint stripper first?. Thanks, Karin

symowallo
symowallo

If it were me, I'd give it a sand first, then use Power lift, then Woodprep or Dekswood, then the Spa 'N Deck. It's a 3 in 1 process, but I'd sand it beforehand just in case. No need to go to bare timber, in my opinion, because the Powerlift should get rid of the old stain I think. But you know what, you're better off asking Flood. I have found them most helpful in responding to questions on their website and also on their tech support hotline - they've been great. Their CEO even answers questions there from time to time as well. No, I am not employed or affiliated with Flood, I just really like their products.
