After washing down (scrubbing as well), with the recommended cleaner, I sanded the area & applied 2 Coates of intergrain natural decking oil. I allowed drying times between all of these procedures. Yellow blotches appeared on small areas of the deck. What could have caused & how to rectify. (Ps. There were were some rain events around at the time also.) Regards Lionel Booth.

We have a few dark great sneaker scuffs on our newly painted ( 3 weeks ago) charcoal intergrain deck. Can you tell me how to remove them safely . I’ve tried soap and water without success. Thank you . [Name Removed].

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello! I have the following information from Vinnie That type of rubber scuff mark can be wiped away with a little citrus cleaner on lint free cloth, and then warm water. Or, methylated spirits on lint free cloth, but not saturated as it will remove the water based UltraDeck Timber Stain coating if rubbed down too much with metho. Please also note - It is subject to the specific footwear and weight of the scuff mark.

Sarah at Intergrain

chrisellard78
chrisellard78

Maybe try rubbing it lightly with some mineral turpentine on a soft cloth(not methylated spirit as this will dissolve and remove the coating) or some Goo off, De Solv It cleaner or Tea tree oil. Just try it on a small corner first with a white cloth to make sure that it doesn't take the colour off. Another option would be to get some of the actual sealer and rub a little bit in with a cloth.

What is the best product to clean my deck which has UltraDeck Timber Stain applied?

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Andrew S, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. For general maintenance of your durable UltraDeck Timber Stain, you can wash down the surface expanse with some of our sister brand, Cabot's Everyday Deck Wash solution,as per label instructions. The Everyday Deck Wash is great for removing various surface contaminants like dirt, dust and bird droppings. external link

Hello, I made some garden shelves and painted the pieces with Ultradeck. I am ready to glue the pieces together (along with using screws) but am wondering how long I need to wait before I can put the glue on the painted surfaces. Thanks, Peter

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Larry, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. It’s a little tricky to provide accurate guidance without knowing the specific glue you are using there. So I would suggest it best to allow the fresh UltraDeck water based coating to cure for at least 5-7days before gluing. Please test the glue on a small sample section via offcut, dry coated timber first, before committing to the coated shelves.

Thank you again and all the very best!

Thanks Vinnie. It is Gorilla wood glue. I noticed that the directions said that the surface had to be free of oils. I'm thinking of rubbing the surfaces that I want to glue, with methylated spirits.

Intergrain

Hi there Larry, A pleasure to assist you via Product Review. Yes, very important to reduce the barrier film in the dry UltraDeck coating via 240 grit sandpaper and wipe down with methylated spirits, over the sections for glue contact.

Can I apply a clear coat over 3 coats of ultradeck stain merbau we like a wet look the colour is fantastic but wondered can we get a wet finish look Ty

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Aaron, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. I’m afraid there are no suitably formulated water based exterior foot trafficable clear coats, you could apply over the dry UltraDeck Timber Stain, barrier finish. The vast majority of exterior timber deck protective coatings will tend to be either a Matt or very subtle low sheen finish result after two – three coats. This is mainly to reduce highlighting of any surface imperfections that a gloss sheen would otherwise achieve, as well as reducing the slip factor potential over the coated deck expanse, when wet after rain or spills.

Hi, will ultradeck adhere to ultra clear? I’m redoing feature timber work at a shopping centre. Intergrain ultra clear was used (about 2 years ago). We proposed to the client we change the product to ultra deck in natural. The exposed timber is quite bad and needs to be completely sanded back to bare timber. The unexposed Timbers are perfectly fine however the ultra clear is such a light colour in comparison to ultra deck natural, I need to match the colours quite well. Can I paint ultra deck over ultra clear? Alternatively can ultra clear be tinted? Thanks

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Tim, Thank you for reaching via Intergrain Product Review. The Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain water based can be applied over the completely dry Intergrain Exterior UltraClear by two coats in colour of choice. You will first need to achieve a clean, smooth, even, dulled down timber surface expanse, by way of 120 -240 grit sanding, then pressure wash/scrub down via Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry – Apply a small test coat to a hidden section and allow it to dry completely, just to make sure you’re happy with the dry test coated result before committing to the expanse.

Please note – The Exterior UltraClear is not formulated for tinting into, as it is a pure clear surface sitting finish specifically formulated for bare, well prepared clean exterior timbers. It does contain a small amount of pigment oxide, which aids in extra UV resistance but won’t be noticed once completely dry. The UltraDeck Timber Stain by comparison, is a high opacity coloured protective surface barrier finish, that will change the look of a prepared exterior timber surface by two coats in colour of choice. external link

Can I paint intergrain ultradeck redwood stain over intergrain ultradeck merbau?

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Anna G, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. Yes, you can apply the Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain in Redwood colour, over the completely clean and dry UltraDeck Timber Stain surface, in Merbau colour. Please be sure to first pressure wash the Merbau-coated surface down, along with the Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner dilution as per label instruction. Once rinsed clean and dry – Please be sure to apply a small test coat by one or two coats over a hidden section of the Merbau-coated surface. Just to make sure you're happy with the dry test-coated finish before committing to the expanse. Also, note – The Merbau colour will affect the Redwood true colour finish to some extent. So please view the dry test-coated finish with one or two coats, in variable lighting throughout the day.

Hi, I recently tiled adjacent to a merbau wall that is finished in intergrain ultra deck natural. I want to put down a little timber trim to cover the uneven tile joint at the wall. What paint colour from Dulux or other would closest replicate the finish on the decking? I only want to match colour, don’t need it to have the same effect.

On a newly-surfaced deck there are patches of milky-looking boards where rain has blown in & in the shade. It was done 4 days ago in fine, dry weather 22' - 12'. What does this mean?

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Christine B, Thank you for reaching out via Intergrain Product Review. It certainly sounds like you have what is commonly known as Water Whitening. Water Whitening is a phenomenon that occurs when moisture or water comes into contact with a water based decking oil or stain that has not fully cured. Usually, this happens when it rains shortly after finishing the deck coating process, however, a particularly dewy evening can also cause whitening on a freshly coated deck surface. Water whitening can appear in patches, spots or, occasionally across the entire deck. The only ill effect of Water Whitening is the fact that it is unsightly. It is a visual effect only and in no way affects the longevity or durability of the finish applied. Once the sun hits the deck, this appearance will usually go away, as the exposure removes moisture trapped in the coating. Some decking coatings can take 7-10 days to fully cure.

While it is unusual for Water Whitening to persist for more than 24 hours after coating, it can occur during the entire curing process, depending on the conditions. If you’re concerned about the look, or are unsure if Water Whitening has occurred, there are a couple of remedies you can try. Apply warm air to a small affected area using a hair dryer or similar. Be sure not to get too close to the surface, staying at least 15cm away. If it is still an issue after the hair dryer process, you can hose down the surface and gently scrub over the expanse using the Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner dilution,as per label instructions. This should rectify the issue for you.

Can I apply turps based intergrain stain over water based intergrain stain oil

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hello there Dave G, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. The short answer is yes! It is important, however, that you must make sure the underlying water-based stain/oil finish is completely dry before applying your fresh oil-based Intergrain Universal Timber Oil (Intergrain does not produce a mineral turps oil-based stain). Please note – Even if it’s a penetrating water-based oil or stain, it’s important to first lightly sand the surface evenly via 120 grit sandpaper, then wash/scrub down the area using the Intergrain Timber Cleaner as per label instructions. Once rinsed clean and dry – Apply sample colour tests by two coats to a small section first. Just to make sure you’re happy with the dry oil based colour finish, before committing.

Intergrain   DM

Hello there Danny B, Thank you for reaching out via Product Review. Really great to know you have a beautifully coated deck finish there via the intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain. From what you have described there it sounds like it might be one of two things – Tannin staining: Tannin staining can occur with any kind of wood. Most tannins are water-extractive. If the dry oil, stain or paint film is intact and discoloration occurs at a later date, then staining is caused by water within the surface. The moisture will migrate and eventually carry the tannin from within the wood to the surface of the paint film, and then the resulting stain appears.

Water Whitening : Water Whitening is a phenomenon which occurs when moisture or water comes into contact with a water-based decking oil /stain that has not fully cured. Usually, this happens when it rains shortly after finishing the deck, however a particularly dewy evening can cause whitening on the decking surface. Water whitening can appear in patches, spots or, on rare occasions, across the entire deck. The only ill effect of Water Whitening is that it is unsightly. It is a visual effect only and in no way affects the longevity or durability of the finish applied. Once the sun hits the deck, this appearance will usually go away, as the exposure removes moisture trapped in the coating or on the surface. Apply warm air to a small affected area using a hairdryer or similar. Be sure not to get too close to the surface, staying at least 15cm away.

If it is still an issue after the hairdryer process, you can hose down the surface and gently scrub over the expanse using the Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner dilution,as per label instructions. This will usually rectify both the tannin and water whitening issues.

Can intergrain ultradeck be used to seal/protect timber and then be painted over? If so, what type of paint do you recommend?

Nate

Hi there I have a treated pine retaining wall, about 12m wide. Probably about 20 years old, no previous staining or painting. I'm trying to make it look better (and ideally increase its life in the process). Really want a black look (not dark brown). Assuming I prepare and clean the wall sufficiently well, will Intergrain UltraDeck Timber Stain in Charcoal achieve my desired result? the reviews above are fairly mixed... I don't want it to look patchy, I don't want to have to apply 3 coats. Also, if I do proceed with this product, how often do you think I'll need to be re-applying to maintain the look? Alternatively, is there another stain in the Dulux Family product range I should consider? Thanks

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hi Nate, I would recommend tinting UltraDeck Timber Stain in Charcoal to the Ebony colour to get a darker black colour, the darker the colour the longer the stain will last too. It is likely you will need 2-3 coats, the best way to get a project plan recommendation is by using the project planner tool on the Intergrain website external link

To reduce the risk of patchiness you could seal the timber first with a coat of Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer, this will ensure the stain goes on smoothly and isn't absorbed unevenly by the timber.

Following the proper process will give you a great long lasting stain.

Feel free to give us a call on 1800 630 285 if you needed further advice or recommendations for other products!

Hi Nate, I have given up on the Intergrain finishes. Too much grief, plus advice from professional timber finishers has only really cemented those thoughts. A random idea that I have seen done once before so can't comment on its effectiveness, but someone I knew treated a pine retaining wall like yours with used engine sump oil. Definitely a black look, repelled water and retained (no pun intended) it's finish for ages!

Just had a query for you, redid my hardwood deck with UltraDeck timber stain and after 14 days it still feels at bit tacky, had a chat with the Intergrain rep at Bunnings before starting this job, as he was there the day I was in there and discussed the correct prep work. Washed down the existing coating with Ultraprep and water blasted the deck twice. Sanded the existng coating on the deck and removed any loose flaky materials on deck and stair treads and vacuumed the dust off. Applied a coat of UltraPrep sealer and primer then 2 coats of Merbau UltraDeck timber stain by brush, slighty sanding between coats. Now after 14 days the deck is still feeling slightly tacky anything I can do to remove the tacky feeling or does it need more time to cure.

Graham
Graham

Hi Shane I think it is just related to the current levels of humidity. a bit more curing time may be necessary. cheers Graham

Can I use UltraDeck tint base without adding stain? It is for vertical fence palings with limited sun exposure. I am attempting to keep the natural colour of treated pine fence pailings.

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hi Mark, UltraDeck Timber Stain Tint Base is not suitable for this purpose, this product should only be used once a colour has been tinted in to it. You can tint some lighter colours that may be suitable, we recommend getting a 250ml sample pot to test a small area before applying to your whole project.

Hi. I have a new Merbau timber fence that I was told by my local Inspirations paint shop to cover the natural timber using no stain with 3 coats of Intergrain Ultra Clear. The natural Merbau colors have faded after 6 months badly and I want to see if I can apply Intergrain Natural Stain over the top of the Ultraclear. My fence is 30m long and in full sun in Qld. What do you recommend. I have also just built a new fence section now and I have not applied anything to it yet and want to get that stained first to ensure the colour remains. I don’t want to apply Ultraclear if I have to strip it in a few years to restain over it. Please help.

My partner has just spilled our sample pot of Intergrain Ultra Deck Timber Stain (in Charcoal) on our back landing and back steps, which are made of concrete. Can you please advise us on how to remove these rather large pools and ugly splotches of dark stain from the concrete? Or, failing that, how to cover them up, and what with? Thank you! Zynthia, 16th August 2020

Intergrain
Intergrain   DM

Hi Zynthia, oh no! Because concrete is quite porous there's no way to really tell how deeply the stain would have penetrated so most paint removal methods won't help. Potentially you could grind back the concrete or your alternative would be to paint over the top with concrete paint.
