How many of you are happy getting 2 years of service from an auto battery and don't see much more? I ask because I am about to replace a 7 year old car battery and I am pretty sure it would have lasted longer if I charged it every so often when not driving much.

I'd say the L in Mr stands for LUCKY. The only way I know to get 7 years out of a battery is as soon as you buy it, discharge it and never use it. 5 years is a stretch, 4 years you are doing really well and 3 years is what you'd expect out of a good battery. Even Varta guarantee their AGM's for 30 months (stop/start) and 40 months if its not (S/S). longevity has too many factors to claim or blame the battery. How you drive, where you drive, state of your electrical system, where the battery was made and the list goes on. Sorry to say but all battery's have an element of pot luck attached to them so check your battery is date stamped and hang onto your receipt.

No it's a daily driver. I consistently get 7-10 years from lead acid batteries, because I maintain them correctly and keep my vehicles in good mechanical order. It is not luck, and no battery should die within 2 years if used correctly. If your vehicle charging system and battery contacts are in good condition, you probably need to top up charge your battery and check water levels regularly. The main cause of Lead acid batteries dying before the lead plates become spongy is failure to keep them fully charged.

I'm intrigued why you keep referring to 2 years out of a battery. 3 years is what you'd expect (on average). But go have a look at manufacturers sites and warranty will be anything from 12 to 36 months. You have an old car (lead acid and contacts - they still make them?) and it's not stop start. The battery longevity is nothing to do with the critical care you provide, just accept you have been extremely lucky. If you're so sure that it's an issue of user care, lets agree to meet here in 7 years time. But hurry, because I'll have been waiting 4 years or possibly 7.

About Lion batteries good or bad?

Bad. Bad. Bad. Would never buy again. Failed after 5 months light use in my golf buggy. VERY difficult to get them replaced under warranty. Then replacements failed just outside warranty period. Too bad, so sad. Bought a different brand of batteries. Only very slightly more expensive but the difference in performance is amazing.
