Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro Questions & Answers
VerifiedCan I put a single coat of box pro on my timber and then top with clear oil? I don’t want the stain to be too dark. If so what sort of oil should I use
Good day, can I use a Cetol Blx Pro light oak stain to a new bare exterior front door? If yes, how many coats should I put in and will I still be needing a varnish for it for extra protection? Cheers
Yes you can. I just did a timber table with it, and it’s good. They recommend 3 coats. Sometimes I put 4. Use a brush and apply without trying to spread it out too much. It dries within 2 hours, and you can put another coat after that. It’s very easy to use and apply. A real pleasure to use and doesn’t smell much at all. It lasts super long time. My boat is out in the sun 365 days a year, and the sikkens pro-box lasts a year or two on the teak wood without any fading. It seems very resistant to UV, unlike some cheap oil products which needed to be reapplied every 3 months at most. You may want to give it another coat after a year or two and the best part is, you don’t even need to sand. Just remove any dirt and apply new coat. You never need varnish and I don’t even know if it’s compatible. Varnish gets trashed by UV fairly quickly if exposed to sunlight, and you’ll have to light sand regularly and apply another coat of varnish. You don’t want the varnish to breakdown because you haven’t regularly added a coat. If that was to happen, you’d have to strip all the varnish, and start again. Sikkens is much better than varnish for durability, but you don’t get that high gloss look that you would with well applied varnish. 500ml will easily do a door with multiple coats in my experience. I have been buying 10L buckets because I have lots of timber around the house.
Appreciate your quick response. Thank you
