When painting over existing doors and frames that are oilbased enamel what undercoat if any is recommended
It is really a pity to hear about this situation. I am about to paint with this product and after reading this review I am very hesitant to use it. Any advice?
If you use any oil based paint from anywhere in the world , you run the risk of it turning a light cream colour if used as a white. Its a problem that has haunted the paint industry for years. The oils in the paint oxidise. This will happen faster in rooms with less light or if amoinia is present. Amoinia is in most waterbased wall paints. So if you paint your walls and then do your trims with oil based , good chance they will yellow. Most paint companies have a warning in the small print on the back of each oil based paint can.
Nowdays water based enamels are available and are promoted as being non yellowing.
Hope this helps
I used Solver Trims. After 3 years, it is now yellow where the paint sees hardly any light (eg inside a cupboard.), however, in internal areas, such as hallways, it is no longer white but more a cream colour. I was warned by the painter that oil based paints will do this.
The alternative is to use a water based gloss paint. Solver and British Paints both make good water based gloss paints. They are superior to the Dulux water based gloss paint - it doesn't look that glossy, unfortunately. I painted the inside of the inbuilt wardrobes with British Paints water based gloss and was very pleased with the finish - it is a bright white gloss and has stayed that way for the past 3 years. The British Paints water based gloss is also easy to apply - I used a roller. The other problems with Solver Trims and all the other oil based gloss paints are:
1. They require some skill to apply
2. They emit fumes
3. They require a solvent like turps for clean-up.
The only problem with water based gloss paints is that where you may need only one-coat with an oil based gloss, you will need two coats with a water based gloss.
