White Knight Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel Questions & Answers
VerifiedI followed the instructions on the product (White Knight Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel: “no primer required for new or lightly rusted steel and wrought iron). I sanded, cleaned with vinegar and then painted the product on new (non-rusted) Gal steel, re coating 2nd coat after 16 hours. The product is able to be scratched off. Is there a sealer, or will light sand + 3rd coat help solve this problem? I believe I needed to apply etching primer however the instructions on the label misled my approach. I have now spent a few days painting and have consumed a few liters of paint and feel faced with the prospect of sanding back to start from scratch.
Hello Rach, White Knight Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel is suitable for use on ferrous metals and can be applied to new or lightly rusted steel and wrought iron surfaces that have been properly prepared. Some metals require a separate primer. In such cases, after cleaning and lightly sanding the surface to remove any chemical treatments, apply one coat of either Rust Guard SLS Etch Primer or True Bite Primer as recommended on the back of the tin. Without the appropriate primer, the topcoat finish will not adhere adequately and can be easily damaged or removed.
To rectify this, you will need to remove the paint coating back to the bare galvanised surface by either sanding or using a chemical paint stripper. Clean the surface and allow it to dry. Apply one coat of Rust Guard SLS Etch Primer or Rust Guard True Bite Primer and allow it to dry. Then, apply two topcoats in the colour of your choice as the decorative finish.

Hi Rach, I have used W.K.R.G.E.E. for ages. I was a Maintenance Manager in a boys school for many years and always used it for outside metal surfaces. One thing I would not have done is, use vinegar to clean the metal as it leaves a slight film and can inhibit bonding. I have always used epoxy thinners or metho to wipe down prior to painting. I ALWAYS USE A PRIMER because it is designed to really bond to the metal and makes for a better, more lasting job, in the end. Personally, I don't believe in " No Primer" on bare metal. When painting NEVER APPLY ON A HUMID DAY as it seems to inhibit the drying process. I always have allowed more than the drying time recommended. When painting, always stir really well and stir during application. I have never used spray cans for outside applications. As I said allow plenty of time for the paint to dry. I believe that good quality painting takes a little time from really good preparation to the finished product. I have outside surfaces that have lasted over ten years.......why? ........because I spent time on every step of the process. I hope this has helped.....Mic.
I used 3 coats of White knight clear epoxy rust guard as the top coat on the roof of my car that I had just repainted with the base paint made by professionals to match the rest of the car. I noticed later from the label on the spray can that this rust guard can be used for external items too but only if they are shaded! So what will happen to my paint now as I naturally drive the car out and in all sorts of climate? Alternatively is any other clear coatings suitable for externals that can be applied on the top of the White Knight rust guard? Appreciate your advice!
Hi Mark. White Knight Rust Guard Clear Guard is for application for interior and sheltered exterior areas and is recommend for use on bare aluminium, copper, brass, alloy and other similar metal surfaces. We do not recommend this product to be used over an automotive finish which can be in direct weather conditions in full range of the elements and this will break the clear down and will peel and flake off the surface prematurely. You may need to consider removal of the coating and use a more suitable automotive paint system for your vehicle.
Hello there and thank you for the kind advice. Is there any protection coating that can be applied over this Rust guard to protect it from the weather exposure? With thanks, Mark
Used white knight clear over wk epoxy enamel that had been dry for four days. Paint blistered all over.Any one know why? Thanks
Contact White Knight, they WILL help you.

First, with respect, Why are you coating your car with an off the shelf sealer anyway? What were you thinking? If it had been my car, I would have had the car "Professionally sealed". Sometimes, if you want to go cheap, you might not get the final result you wanted. Whilst White Knight make the highest quality coatings, I feel you are in for a life of pain because you wanted to go for a cheaper alternative. Good luck with it anyway.
Mic, with all due respect you are not answering my question but Thanks for the good wishes anyway!
I have followed all instructions on cans. Sanded, cleaned primed and 2 coats. Dreadfully runny paint which makes it crappy to use. Chips and peels off my aluminium windows. Have used other white knight products which where amazing. This is NOT. Many many hours spent trying to make this work . Miserable fail. Not a happy customer. Any suggestions from the manufacturer?
Sorry to hear your experience. I’ve successfully done what you have on a number of surfaces with White Knight but (1) never on ‘fresh’ aluminium and (2) my paint has always been a nice thickness coming out of the paint can after the long stirring process. I wonder if your problem might be the actual type of aluminium you have on your windows and the prep needed for that? Whether you used the correct primer for aluminium?

I have used White Knight paint now for years......no problems. It seems like you may have needed a different primer or may have had a bad batch. Contact White Night and explain your problem and I'm sure they will be able to help you
I followed all recommendations from white knight including the correct primer ( their product) and stirred for longer than recommended time but product is very thin. I am painting old windows so once again followed their instructions including sanding, cleaning etc to no avail.I'm pleased you had a great experience with this product, but unfortunately that was not mine.
Hi Linda, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Can you detail what products were used or how long they had to cure? It would be best if you can email us with validation of the products used and details on the pre-painting preparation and product application at whiteknightcontactus@ppg.com.
Can I use this paint to paint a wooden boat Will it go over marine paints that have been used previously
Good question! I’ve loved this product on numerous surfaces that are exposed to rain (eg my garage roller doors, driveway sliding gate and pool fencing) but would I expect it to withstand long emersion in salt water? Not that I’m an expert but it would go on beautifully but would it do the job. Hmmm. I think you may need to invest in more tailored marine paint!
Not entirely sure, but if you used a sealer or even por-15 you could certainly use this as a top coat
Hi Graeme,
We suggest using dedicated marine paints on a wooden boat.
Why white knight epoxy gloss spray $ 10 dearer than other brands seem to Offer same epoxy deal…?
Hi Peter,
White Knight does not set pricing for our products. That is organised by the resellers and can vary depending on your location.
Go to Bunnings with its price beating policy for valid retail pricing on equivalent products
I painted my external wrought Iron Ballustrading Railing (pre-painted) with White Knight Rustguard Epoxy Enamel 7 months ago and it still is not dry?? Why?? It is sticky to the touch
Sorry but you have asked another reviewer a question The only answer I have for you, is because it is garbage and the company that sells it knows its garbage, that's why they even write on the product all the faults they will not cover, it seems any problem you have with this stuff is not covered under their warranty, funny that, steer well clear of any product bearing the PPG brand, white knight especially.
Hi Richard,
We were informed that our technical team has received an email from you. We hope we were able to help you.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have more paint and colour-related questions in the future.
I totally disagree. My pool fence and my sliding gate are both painted with this product and they are still great after 10 years but possibly time to redo for more sheen. I had to prepare the pool fence properly (including sanding due to the type of prior paint). This paint dried quickly for all surfaces. Something is going on with your surface.
I have noted a number of negative feedbacks about the Rust Guard paint. I retired from my engineering business almost 2 years ago but still use this paint for domestic purposes. I have been surprised by some of the negative comments and noted one of them had photos that clearly showed that the primer they had used had also failed which to me indicated it was not the fault of the rust guard. I have used a number of metal protection paints over the previous 35 years and with the products we made which included galvanised metal, we only used an etch primer and sprayed the Rust Guard thinned with GP thinners . Never had a problem, I painted my daughter's outdoor metal table and chairs about 4 years ago and I am now painting some of our garden furniture which has a weathered original coating, I am not expecting any problems.
Lots of comments about reactions with second coat but no answers. Why would I buy this product based on the reviews and the lack of an honest response from you?

The internal stairwell railings were prepared using White Knight Rust Guard Epoxy. Rust spots appeared within the first year. The building is near a beach. How long should it last?
Hi Anne, When painting near a coastal environment, paint coatings have a shortened life due to the salt air in the environment. Initially, we would have suggested applying a coat of Rust Guard Cold Gal on bare steel, then prime with Rust Guard True Bite Primer and 2 top coats of Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel. This would give a better result for use in a corrosive environment. For now, we suggest taking the coating back to the rust affected areas and remove the rust back to clean metal. Once clean, apply 1 coat of Rust Guard Metal Primer and 2 top coats of Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel. Depending on how exposed the coating is, this could last a minimum 1-5 years.
Hi Just sprayed chassis with flat black rust guard epoxy enamel. Didn't thin went on great. Upon reading 2rd coat reviews should I thin 2rd coat.? Thanks Phil.
Hi Phil, Most paints can be sprayed direct from the gun. In some circumstances, thinning of the product can be required but only if the paint is a little on the thicker side with up to 10% with Mineral Turpentine. Otherwise if you have not had any issues, spray as is without thinning.
Sprayed this product on to clean new metal, first coat went on ok the 2nd coat looked absolute rubbish. Seems to react with first coat. Waited 24 hours between coats, 2nd coat did not go off after 7days. I Was unable to handle and assemble parts 7 days after painting! Had to strip the paint off and start again! I could have done the job with a box of Dulux metalshield rattle cans for less money and less time wasted. This product has a terrible finish.. Next time I will spend the extra $20 and buy a product that works, other brands I've used are ready for assembly after 24 hours..

What is the dilution ratio for a spray gun?
Clive. .just use standard mix of 2:1 ie two parts thinners one paint, if your getting clogging a the spray nozzle add a bit more thinners in your gun. .Good quality thinners help... Cheers
Hi Clive,
Epoxy Enamel is normally thinned between 5 and 10% with Rustguard Solvent when spraying.
Hi Painted my car trailer yesterday in this, it looks good, but I noticed it is still sticky after 24 hours. Hoe long does it take to dry? regards Sean
Hi Sean, Air drying products require a minimum of 7 days depending on drying and weather conditions, paints can continue to harden and cure for up to 1 month. Once the coating has cured, it will reach maximum hardness. Until then the coating could be marked if in constant use.
Why the heck don't you mention this on the can?? I wouldn't have bought this product knowing it takes days to cure!
