NO. It's not a high-temp paint. It will yellow up
Can Wattyl Killrust Heavy Duty Primer be applied to lightly rusted surfaces that have been washed down?
yes
Can I put water base paint over it
yes.
What most appreciate for mixing
can you use thinners in killrust paint
Yes. 10% Thinner at most. I have done it, and the outcome looked just as nice, but the paint wasn't as strong. After about a year, it started pealing. Thinners will make the paint dry faster than intended, plus you will need more coats.
I am repainting a boat trailer. The trailer was repaired/ re built a few years ago and sprayed with cold cal, it has since rusted. I have now grinded some rusted metal away and will clean the metal with rust converter then sand or grind smooth. I plan to finish with poly U400 but what primer should I use? Wattyl Killrust Etch Primer or Wattyl Killrust Heavy Duty Primer? What's the difference?
Put Wattyl Killrust Etch Primer on bare steel and Wattyl Killrust Heavy Duty Primer over pre-painted surfaces. If most of your trailer is a unified colour you don't need Wattyl Killrust Heavy Duty Primer. You can paint Wattyl Killrust without priming. Allow for a long drying time. it's great stuff when used correctly. The Etch Primer gives a stronger bond to the bare steel.
Thanks for the reply. Does it matter if Etch Primer goes onto existing paint or gal? There is some of the trailer that still has gal on it. Can I paint over it with etch or do I need to use two primers one for bare metal and one for the painted. Never used etch before not sure what it does. Thanks again.
A lot of people are asking about this product and not a lot of answers. It can be thinned up to 20% with Methylated Spirits (denatured alcohol) As with any paint job, prep it right. Surface rust is ok, but flakey rust and dirt etc is not. Spec sheet: external link
In my own exp with this stuff it works in almost any situation. Goes well over primed wood and its hard wearing. I've used it over a bathroom sink and vanity tops, a toilet, a porcelain bath, brass and copper, a car trailer and other stuff with excellent results. Plastic is also good and it seems to handle some flexibility, but its a good idea to flash plastic with a flame (google it) to create an oxide that the paint will 'etch' to. I sprayed a guitar once with my own blend of the dark brown gloss roof paint mixed with a small amount of matt black as i was after a darker finish. The end result was an unexpected and amazing effect. In a shadow the guitar appeared to be a matt black, in the light it looked like the deep dark brown I was after but with black pigments, almost pearl like. I buffed it with 0000 rubbing pad and left it matt. It looked amazing!
Once cured it can be removed with acetone. I spray the object with acetone and cover/wrap it in plastic kitchen wrap (Glad wrap) so the acetone cant evaporate, then wait until it lifts the paint. Most of the paint can be wiped off with the wrap and what remains can be scraped off or removed with water and/or meths. BTW this is a cheap and effective method for removing paint from lots of things, especially wood, just use the appropriate solvent. Acetone takes off lots of layers at once and you can even reuse the wrap if doing things like weatherboards.. anyway back on topic.
If you want to paint over it don't use paints that require thinners strong enough to lift the super etch. If unsure try a little of the paint if you have it or use the relevant paint thinner with gladwrap for an hour as a test. Ideally stick with the Super Etch family of paints if you can.

Hi, Will Killrust ColdGalv bond to a surface that has been prepped with Rusteeter, then Killrust Heavy Duty Primer? I am dealing with rust in an engine as have the engine out at the moment. It has been suggested to me that it would make a good protective top coat.
ColdGalv needs to go onto steel or zinc, not as a top coat
What is the point of having a place to ask questions if you never answer?
