Ausbeds Aurora Questions & Answers
VerifiedDo you dispose of the old mattress?
Hi James, In Sydney we can, its an option on the home page. It's $60 and we take it for recycling. The $60 is the fee we pay to the recycler. Karl, owner at ausbeds :)
Thankyou Karl. We are planning on visiting your showroom at Marrickville.
With best wishes
James Lawson
Hi there, What is the height of the Aurora mattress (before any layer adjustment)? Thanks!
Hiya! 31cms :) It can be changed to any other ausbeds mattress by changing the components. They are all 31cms
I’m wondering about the sides, are they soft or firm and is this mattress great for a bad back? I have bulging disks and wake up with painful hips and spine on my current hybrid mattress. Help please!
H Julie, I'm karl, owner at ausbeds, great questions :) With bulging discs it's going to be more important to "get it right". Your verterbrae are compressing your discs so you need to make sure that's not happening. You need to be in the right position so it doesn't happen. It can be very tricky. If you choose to go with my mattress system you will be able to make small adjustments to the firmness. There are at least 13 different adjustments possible, it's like getting 13 matresses in one. So it's possible to try, then adjust slightly firmer etc'. I can certainly help you in the showroom, I'm there durting the week most of the time, come and see me :)
Side supports, I've made them balanced, you don't want them too firm as you will roll up at the edges, I've made them string, but not too strong where it may reduce the usable area on top of the mattress. I've made the whole top feel the same all the way to the edge, but the edge is strong enough make sure you stay in the mattress.
Many years ago I started making them too soft on the edges, and people complained so I made them really firm, then people complained that they were kind of rolling up on the edges, I went too far. So now I have found a middle ground where nobody complains anymore. Lessons learnt, there is such a thing as side supports that are "too firm".
Ok thanks for the detailed reply. I can’t visit the show room as I’m in Queensland. I have used a firm mattress last year, it was to hard on my hips and shoulders and the current mattress is now to soft (5mths old) and as you’ve mentioned causing compression so I’m in lots of pain now. Your sides sound perfect. I’m also on the heavy side, so need to take that into consideration as well. Ideally I am after soft and supportive. There’s so much to take into account
People in queensland, and victoria quite often order beds from me, for those people I try to get them on the phone to really talk through how I deal with trying to get a good fit from so far away. So feel free to call and ask for karl :) I'll help you out. But generally what I do is ask the bodyweight of the person, let's say they are between 70-90kgs.
These people always end up on the medium range. Something that isn't clear in the website (in order to make things more simple) is that the medium range, has three firmness levels. The 5, 6, amd 7. We usually send out the level 6 mattress, this gives the customer the abiltiy to increase the firmness (to a seven) or decrease the firmness (to a 5) depending on their preferences.
We actually have 4 spring tensions for different bodyweights, here is a link to a page that goes further into depth about this subject. external link Basically, I've discovered that the spring tension to your bodyweight is the main decider of mattress suitabiltiy.
So we ask your bodyweight, then we choose the spring for you based on the bodyweight, then we put the padding on top. Some people like the marshmallow feel on top (cloud), some people like the flatter feel on top (aurora). Some people have a lower budget so we give them the plastic foam top - plastic foam is what you'll find in 99% of mattresses.
When you say - "Ideally I am after soft and supportive", This is quite common, however what's soft and supportive for one person might be too soft for another. Which is why matching the spring tension to the bodyweight is important. It allows us to get it right for each Person. We also are able to swap the mattress springs, even in brisbane. We do this for free, however the transport charge to brisbane is not free unfortunately. Still, it's always good to be able to tweak the mattress like this. There are many tweaks possible.
Thanks so much Karl, I’ll chat with my partner over all the information you offered us. A+ service Thank you!
Do your beds have battery backup for power outages?
Hi Rhonda, The Aurora is a mattress, Its has no battery or electrical components of any kind.
Is this mattress suitable for an adjustable bed base?
Yes, However there are some things to know in order to optimize further. 1. For people that only want to tilt the mattress to 20 degrees, (not very much) no modifications would be necassary. You can just buy one and it will work.
2. For people that want to tilt it more the 20 degrees, I would take out the border wire. This would add extreme flexibilty to the mattress and you could bend it 90 degreees if you wanted to.
When you take out the border wire the edges will also be softer, so I usually tell people to only take it out if necessary, karl, owner at ausbeds
Is there any sagging when you sit on the edge of the bed? Thanks
Hiya! Short answer, no Long answer It depends on what your last mattress was. If you had a mattress in a box this mattress's side support will be far superior due to the border wire running around the top and bottom of the perimeter of the pocket springs.
If you had a mattress from a retailer it probably had a foam wall around it which can be a firmer edge than what I have in the Aurora. Edge support like everything in a mattress is about balance. If you have too much edge support the mattress will become uncomfortable close to the edge. If you don't have enough, you feel like you're gonna roll out of the mattress.
It is for this reason I have built my mattresses so that when you lay on the edge of the mattress you won't roll out, but also you won't feel a hard edge. It feels even all the way to the edge.
Before this edge support, I was using something much firmer, which was better for sitting, however, laying closer to the edge you felt like you were rolling " up a hill".
So I went too far with the edge support, reigned it back in and now It's well balanced and I wouldn't know how to make it better than it is :) karl..
Thanks Karl!
is the removable cover washable?
Hi Graham, I designed the quilting and the mattress. So I should be able to answer your question :) It is washable. However, you should take care in washing this cover (or any mattress cover). If it shrinks it will tighten the mattress and make it firmer. There are certainly other mattresses with covers that are easier to wash than my mattress covers. However, as with anything in the world of mattresses, there's always a tradeoff. A thinner cover will move around a lot more. Also If I used a thinner cover there is a good chance that whatever spills on the mattress will go through to the foam underneath which is unwashable.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask away, happy to help :) karl..
