Unfair conditions?

Read the terms and conditions very carefully.

I was asked to provide a 90% deposit before they would do the install. This would have made me an unsecured creditor for $10000. I understand that they have some risk to manage, but so do I. How do I know that they won't go broke and leave me to fight with the receiver.

I was told that this is a non-negotiable franchisor condition, so it must apply to all franchisees.

Always negotiate for fair conditions.

I am at a complete loss to explain this attitude as we recently put in carpet ($3000) and when we asked how much deposit was required was told just to fix them up when it was installed. In short the service was spot on for time, professionalism and very friendly. This was at Ulladulla floorworld.

I certainly would not be giving my business to any person who asked for such a deposit.

Thanks John. I think you got a good one. He is a smarter businessman than mine, because he understands how to balance his risk management with maintaining good will with his clients. Actually, they first asked for me for a 30% deposit ($3000) to cover the ordering of the materials. I thought that this was reasonable, so I paid it immediately. Then I was told that I should have read the fine print because another deposit of 60% was required before they would do the install. If I rejected that, they could keep my 30% deposit and not do any work. There was no way out for me. I still had 10% to hold onto for a good job. I am still waiting for it to be done, so I don't know if they did yet.
