Toilet training qn: can we put normal waterproof mattress covers over the futons during this period?

Yes you can.

Hi there, I am wondering if a futon would be suitable for myself, perhaps not as it seems you need a whole set up to get the most out of the futon…

I move houses fairly frequently and also am considering living in a van for a while so the versatility of being able to fold up a mattress for moving and more space is ideal for me. Would it be very uncomfortable without a tatami etc?

Thank you.

It be pretty perfect for on the move living. Though, I recommend adding one of those memory foam mattress you get from swags below the futon for extra support. And make sure to keep the futon dry and sun bath on the reg.

The Japanache futon would be suitable, it is lightweight and I sleep on mine just on the carpet on the floor and find it cosy and comfortable. It comes with a cover and I just add my pillow and doona. Easy.

There possibly isn't a better alternative for your needs. You don't need tatami mats. We have hundreds of customers who use our mattresses in cars, boats, campervans, tiny homes etc that didn't purchase tatami mats.

Hi. I'm wondering about the idea mentioned on the website of putting the tatami mat and futon on top of a bed frame, the website states that the bed sized mats will fit on queen and king size beds. I'd like to do this to keep the sheets etc from draping on the floor. I've been looking at bed sizes and they don't seem to match up with the bed sized tatami mats. Has anyone tried this? Any advice or experiences appreciated. Thank you, Marie

Hi Marie, I would recommend to give Richard from Japanache a call and discuss with him. That’s what I did and it really helped getting my head around the options. I wanted to put the tatami mats on my queen bed but wasn’t sure if it would fit. I eventually ended up buying just the Shikibuton and not the tatami mats to try that first. I reorganised the slats of the bed and bought a mattress topper to have underneath the Shikibuton. For us, that works fine. I’m happy that I did it that way. Airing the futon is important and the tatami mats also need their care. Just the futon is enough for me to air and turn, etc. Other than that, totally happy with the change from ‘normal’ mattress to Shikibuton. Our sleep has definitely improved. Hope this helps.

Hi Eos, and thank you for your response. I'll definitely take your advice and give Richard a call - I've been trying to figure things out by myself for several weeks and am going round in circles with all the different options. It's interesting to hear what you've ended up doing, its added another possibility for me :) Did you reorganise the slats to form a more or less solid base? I also love your point about the futon being enough for you to air and turn etc. I have wondered if I'd be able to keep up with the regular maintenance . I've experimented with sleeping on the floor, with a few layers of padding, and loved the feel of it, so excited to eventually sleep on a futon from Japanache. Your advice has been very helpful :) Thank you.

G'day,

Is the futon hot to sleep on in the summer?

Also, do you recommend the futon for side/stomach sleepers? I sometimes have shoulder/hand pain from sleeping on a mattress at the moment.

Cheers, Anton

jacob

I sleep on front and side. I find my shoulders can be worse off but the rest of the body, particularly the hips and lumbar spine are far better supported in the side position. You have to reorient abit as positions comfortable on a regular bed may not suit the futon. This guide may help: external link

On the temperature. It depends on the temperature of your floor as the futon will be making more direct contact with them. Personally I find no difference though I imagine the futon would in fact be cooler to sleep on given there's less mass there to conduct heat.

Thanks Jacob. I'll check out the video, and that makes sense about the temp of the futon itself. Still deciding. I will do a bit more research.

I have this futon in far north Queensland and have no issues with heat at all. I sleep on side and back and do not have any pain or aches in the morning. I just spent weekend at my mum's on quite firm mattress and woke up a bit sore, going straight back to futon!

Cool, thanks Kristjan. I will keep that in mind. Still tossing up between a mattress and a futon.

Japanache

Hi Anton, They blend a bio-plastic in with the cotton during the processing. That leaves air pockets throughout the mattress which prevents it from flattening and going hard (which is what a 100% cotton mattress will do). That lets the mattress breathe more and stay cooler. It lowers the temperature by a few degrees (compared to a 100% cotton filling) which can assist in reducing sweating when it is hot. We supply many side sleepers with futons. If you find it too hard then put something softer between the mattress and the floor or stack two mattresses and rotate them regularly for a longer lifespan. Please call the shop if you have any other questions :) Richard

Heya, do you do a size Double?

Japanache

We don't stock a Double but we can get one made that size if you can wait for our mid-year container.

Aisling.Orla
Aisling.Orla

Can I ask, when would the mid-year container arrive? And also, what would be the cost of the Double, or the Double in a package, as I noticed most of yours are sold as a package. Thanks :)

Sorry, one more question. I've just checked the semi-double measurements compared to my double at home. The semi double is larger than a standard double? It looks as though going by the 153cm width you have listed for the semi double, it would be potentially suitable for my space.

What websites or stores can i find futon mattresses on that arent crazy high in pricing

Japanache
Japanache   DM

external link  If we are out of your price range then try looking for stores that don't sell Premium Futons made by an award-winning master-craftsman in Japan. Work out what you are willing to spend on something that you will use for 1/4 - 1/3 of your day and take it from there.

Lucy

Hi Amani, You could try external link  for excellent shikibutons and related products at reasonable prices, and with staff who respond to your questions honestly and thoroughly but without an arrogant tone. Unfortunately they're currently not able to ship to Australia directly, but do monitor their website and/or Etsy store as hopefully that will change once things settle down internationally (here's hoping!). Cheers, Lucy

Hello. Thinking of buying Tatami mat,Shikibuton,Kakebuton etc. Are they made of unbleached 100% organic Japanese cotton. Is tatami mat made from rice straw?

Japanache
Japanache   DM

Hi Noel, Thanks for your question. First of all, there is no cotton industry in Japan. They import all their cotton. If they have a field full of water it will have their heavily subsidised rice growing in it. Our award-winning futon manufacturers, source the best cotton available for futons in Japan. It is an unbleached, organic Mexican cotton. this is far better than the standard cotton used in Japan and 100% fresh. Most futons in Japan use recycled cotton. Our mattresses are made using the Mexican cotton which is blended with 10% polyester to keep it cooler, slow down the compaction rate and increase product longevity.

Our tatami are made using rice straw and covered with igusa (a sea grass).

All of this information is on our website for everyone to see (www.japanache.com.au)
