Jeep Commander (2006-2010) Questions & Answers
Hi I have a 2007 jeep commander 4.7v8
Recently had trouble starting up eventually just died, towed to mechanics and was told it was the engine computer module needs to be replaced plus 2 keys, they quoted me $11.000 to fix that's plus labour my mouth dropped I'm like what the hell, been doing some research online and have seen these parts going for under $300 need help pls.
Our 2006 Jeep Commander will not start due to computer and or electrical problems. mechanics and auto electricians do not know why. Has anyone got any suggestions? We really liked the car but do not know whether it is possible to fix it. We had the ECU repaired and a new starter motor. Maybe we will have to scrap it. Thank you
A little more information would assist. Is your Commander a Diesel? Does it start and die within a few seconds? Have you changed the battery? I have a Diesel 2006 Commander and did have a similar problem after jump starting it due to the ECU putting it into "anti theft" mode when too many initial attempts were made.
I had a few electrical glitches with mine and sold the car before they started costing big $$. Sounds like time for yours to go. Maybe take to a jeep dealer and have the problem analysed to see if it's worth fixing. Not sure what they are worth as scrap but obviously worth more running. Good luck.
It is a diesel, we have not changed the battery. No one knows what is wrong because they cannot start the car. The local jeep dealership does not know what is wrong. If only we could find out what is wrong. it is a shame if we have to scrap it. Thank you anyway.
Hey mate,
My commander did the same,it’s a key problem and a couple of modules on the ignition that’s all . It’s not you ecu or pcm.
Cheers Dean
Back seat head rests. How do you make then a fixed position as they are laying down pushing against neck and head
I am not sure. I removed the centre rear headrest in order to get e clear view through the rear window.
It's all immaterial now because the Commander self ignited last August and burnt to the ground !!!
Hi Pat. From memory if you lay the seat down the headrest falls. I think you need to lift it before you lift the seat upright again.
Hi Pat, sorry for taking so long getting back to you, My rear headrests are leaning slightly forward can't straighten them up, I also removed the centre rear headrest in order to get e clear view through the rear window.
So Sorry to hear you lost your Commander, I just love mine, had to Replace Front Driveshaft after 200,000klm though. I am now aiming towards getting a 2" Lift and slightly Wider Tyres for Beach Driving, hope to have it all done before March 2017.
?? have you Brought another Commander.
My 2006 commander as a sign come up that says service 4 wheel drive system. Does anyone know what that is? The car will not let me put it into 4 wd. I have never done any 4wdriving, so would like to know if anyone has had that? It happened once before after I had a 3,000 klm trip with my van and I had jeep to look at it and they said all the clutch plate need to be replaced in the transfer box and I said it has never been in 4wd ever. Anyway when I took it home the sign went off and now 3 years later it's back and I was with my van and have done 5,000 klms so would love to know? Ted
Hi Ted I have never had this light come on . But after buying my 2006 Commander I had all the oils changed from Front to back including diffs transfer trans my Jeep has done 217400klm, I had this annoying noise that sounded like a Universal, but after checking all front and back all seemed ok,
However the noise still was there, so I jacked it up and had a really good look with a good Tourch in the Dark and Walla,, the Front Universal is formed in a Rubber compound it was almost non existent so ordered a New Tail Shaft as they don't replace uni's it cost $1240 and put it in myself using Loctite on bolts , all is great now all noises gone car sounds like new. Hope this is helpful. Cheers
thanks very much mate but i just found out that its a servo that is faulty and its a recall back in may this year and there is also a recall on the key hole
I had forgotten about this but it is a Jeep recall for the Final Drive Control Module Not sure what the FDCM does but it took the dealer 30mins to upload so me new software and the problem goes away. If you google it on the web you will find full details
my 2006 commander has had no trouble up till 2 days ago my brake peddle has all of a sudden got alot more travel i checked for leaks and low fluid all ok checked the pads all good so im a bit tossed on this anyone had that trouble? its a merc motor as well 3D
Hi Ted Not had anything like that with mine. Does the pedal have less travel if you pump the brakes a couple of times? If it does then there is air or moisture in the fluid and worth changing it or bleeding the system. If not then I would suspect the servo.
Regards
Ed

Hi Ted. Haven't heard of this problem, I'm no mechanic, but a good source of info. Is ausjeepoffroad.com, you can register for free and they have a forum on most of their jeep models, including the commander.
In the past they have been very helpful and that's where I first learnt about the swirl motor seal leak. Sounds like a leakage, but failing the forum would take it to a reputable mechanic ASAP.
I have been told I have a leak from the turbo pipe which has leaked onto the swirl motor, and the motor and pipe needs replacing for $3000.00! I know the dealers charge a lot for labour. first the ETC light kept flashing and would not go off, then the engine light came on and that wont go off and we started losing power, over a few days but not driving it too far I noticed it was running a little rougher idling at around 500, so I decided to take it to the dealer who gave me diagnosis(see above). should it cost this much?
There is a seal on the swirl motor that often does leak oil which runs into the turbo which does damage. I had a dealer change the seal and had no trouble since. When I heard about it, a few who had similar faults did cost thousands of dollars. All I can suggest is ring around but 3-3,500 is common.
Thank you so much for your help ,however what else can go wrong with this car? it was only 9 months ago that the prop shaft bearing failed! have I bought a lemon or what, I just don't trust this car, do I keep it or trade it?? It has travelled 199,450 kilometres.
Hey david ! Steve from austraila . I have a 2006 jeep commander and same thing happen to me. Swirl motor fail. I got on the net done some research and end up buying a swirl motor bypass plug approved by merceedes . on eBay . By the time I bought the plug and tech tool the computer all up it cost me $ 350.00 . Jeep wanted $2900.00 you got to be joking. Cheers Steve.
I ended up buying a brand new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and Im very happy with it, I got the commander repaired and sold it !!! Thank you all for your input.
