Land Rover Freelander 2 (2007-2014) Questions & Answers
VerifiedI'm wondering if there is anyway possible that there is a bullbar from another model that will fit my Freelander 2 2011???
I didn't look at this option. The reason is that bullbars need to be tested against the vehicle it is intended for to ensure that the built-in safety features aren't compromised - e.g. airbags, crumple zone in front. Also, in an accident, your insurance policy may be voided if it is not a legitimate bullbar. I wouldn't do this.
If this is essential maybe there is a Land Rover-approved one made in the UK that you could import.
I own a freelander2 2013 entry model with basic sound system. Radio cd is fine but I can not get the Audio mute setting to change when I press the phone. Can any one help with this
I have a freelander got mechanic to change front ball joint but got the wrong one supplied he measured the side that was changed and ballpoint and wishbone measure 15 inches yet original side ais 14 inches any idea where to get one from?
I am no mechanic. I would go to a Land Rover dealership’s spares department. I use an independent mechanic who specialises in Land Rover here on the lower North Shore of Sydney. I find it more satisfactory being able to talk directly to the mechanic who is working on my car.
Hey! I'm looking at investing in my first car and have a freelander in the family. It's rear differential needs replacing for around $4.5k and has around 260,000km on the odometer. I want to know is it worth fixing or will problems keep arising?
Hi, the answer depends on the age and upkeep of the FL2. 260k means you also have to change the transmission fluid as well. If these have been done and the car is in good condition, and you don't have to pay anything else out then $4k seems like a reasonable expense compared to buying a different vehicle with its own issues. The devil you know....
My 2014 FL2 is at 170k and has had no issues at all. :-)
Freelander 2 2014. Some days after driving it for sometime when the car at complete stop e.g at a traffic light and after removing foot from break the car jumps aggressively as if someone hits you from the back. If you turn to manual transmission the problem goes away! And thoughts?
Hi Tito I'm no mechanic but it sounds like when you slow and come to a stop the gears are staying in 2nd and not dropping back into 1st. Or it could just be it's revving to high at idle, perhaps from having the air-con going. So either way it's hopefully just a programming issue. Take it to a Land Rover specialist who has the most up to date diagnostic and programming updates for the next service. If it's bad I wouldn't wait because you can end up breaking the engine mounts or create other problems.
Thanks Andy for the reply. I feel it is an electronic problem too. It does happen regardless of Air Cond. As you said it could be the gear is not going back to 1st and it does it very quickly when disengage from the break which give this jump/hit. I read that it could be sticking valve but not sure what that is (?). But I assume that it should do the same if put to manual gear which it doesn’t and the problem only present itself in Automatic transmission mode.
I drove my freelaner2 down the motorway for about 40 miles with no problems , but out of the blue the whole front end started to vibrate,I was traveling at approx 65 miles an hour so I slowed down to below 50 miles an hour but the problem didn't clear .i limped on till I could get off the motorway and checked for anything lose like wheels and driveshafts but everything was ok so I drove it back on to the motorway and found the problem had gone and I drove on to my destination which was a farther 20 miles ,and then returned home another 60 miles and the problem never happened again.can anybody give me a clue what it could have been?
Hi Chris I'm no expert but sounds like wheel alignment or balancing. Although it's odd that it stopped. Would definitely get it checked.
In how get acceleration less in land lover freelander?
Has anyone had the problem of battery drain from their Land Rover 2 2008 model it had a battery drain problem which the dealer said they had fixed but has got worse and now land rover say it is not fixed that the radio is still draining 50% of the battery constantly ie when the car is switched off and that the fuse motherboard has to be replaced costing over $2000
Hi. I had the same issue. I fixed it via changing the Ca/Ca battery to a AGM battery. Still had the drain as it's all the computers, electronics in the car. After going to the AGM battery the drain took longer than two or 3 days, a lot longer. Added an Anderson plug to the battery so I could easily leave it on charge if going away for a longer time.
Hi. I purchased a used 2013 MY14 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE with 98,000 ks on it 3 months ago. I am now having a problem with acceleration. It started with the car having reduced acceleration after stopping at lights for approx 5 secs, or after slowing for a corner, however now it has worsened to no having virtually no acceleration above 500 revs. when this happens it will still reverse OK however, and if I turn the air con off the car will go again. Any ideas on what could be causing this please? The drive train was replaced in the first week of purchase.
Possibly bad alternator Check your voltage with aircon turned on and with aircon turned off if it goes below 14 volts you may need another alterntor. The vehicle computer is sensitive to voltage fuctuating too much. See if that helps
Thank you so much Vern, will try this and let you know how it goes.
Purchased 2011 Freelander 2 with 50,000 km on the clock.(fully service history) at 112,000 km the PTU power transfer unit required replacement at $2500 then suspiciously the transmission burnt out. Apparently Landrover admitted when transferring over the PTU it can cause issue with transmission. Was quoted $21,000 for new part from Doncaster Landrover. I opted for the refurbished part at $7000 with 1 year warranty. Very expensive to service. feels sluggish and blows quite a lot of smoke. Is it worth keeping the car once the transmission goes in or trade? The body is in good condition
Sounds like they sold you their problem. I’m finding the Freelander 2 to be a hit or miss when it comes to problems. From what I’ve read on so many forums. I’ve had a good run from my Freelander 2 2007 model until recently.
Freelander2 2014 diesel 50,000km. The gears seem to change to lower gears when you are at complete stop (few seconds) which cause you to feel a little push. Is that normal?
Yes Tito mine does the same thing. Had it checked out by LR and it got the all clear. Not so bad now its done 40000km. Have learnt that the car responds to how you drive it also. I was driving mine very conservativly and it became sluggish and dangerous as it would not quickly accelerate from stop signs etc. Now I am a bit more aggressive and give it a squirt now and again and its ok.
I have a Freelander 2 10my s16 hse. My landrover has now had 2 diffs. It has not been diagnosed yet but it looks like 3 diff may need replacing. It seems every 55,000 klm it need new pinion bearing & or replacement diff. My Freelander has been looked after and garaged. Has Never really been off road apart from apart from a dirt road about 10 klm.
The 2nd diff was covered by my insurance policy. If a new diff is required I believe LRover should pay. What are your thoughts.
Hi Jeff. Our FL2 only has 38,000kms up so I'm hoping I'm hoping we don't strike the same problem. I guess if the vehicle is our of warranty and if the warranty on any replacement parts and labour has expired then you're at the mercy of the dealer you bought the vehicle from...maybe you can try to get a deal. They pay for the parts and you pay labour...or they supply the parts at cost? If you purchased the vehicle new you might have some more clout with the dealer. From my time in the aviation industry there's sometimes the chance to do a deal but from the dealers point of view unless they in turn can get additional concessions from the manufacturer installing new parts under warranty does not cause the original warranty to start all over again. I recall years ago an aquaintance buying a Mk2 Ford Escort brand new and it was such a dog and he made such a fuss the dealer gave him most of his money back and he bought something else.
hi there
I am tossing up between 2010 Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto 4x4 MY11 in diesel OR 2009 LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2 HSE (4x4) in petrol.
May someone please give me a recommendation and which one is a better drive and fuel economy?
Thankyou
Hi. My experience is only with diesel and in ten months of ownership it's been brilliant. Our use is 99% on-road and the occasional bit of amateur fun on sand, snow, loose rock or shale and it's never been stopped yet. Off the top of my head mileage in old money around town is about 27 MPG...much better than that on an open road trip. Petrol is quite expensive in NZ compared with OZ. Currently we pay around NZ$1.90 per litre for 91 Octane. Diesel here is anywhere from NZ$0.89 to NZ$1.26 per litre and that's within the city of Christchurch...you pay more in the sticks. Diesel powered cars cop a $61.00 per/1000km Road User Charge over here so the price difference between diesel and petrol is not that great. I like the power characteristics of the diesel...and the sound...It's just more business like! The Freelander 2 Series are all great cars in my book...crying shame they stopped making them last year in favour of the "Sport" edition. If you have the coin it may be worth while looking at something from 2012 onwards - I think they all came with built in GPS and possibly more wifi/phone/radio connectivity if that's worth anything to you.
I am looking at buying a 2009 Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 & would like to know people's views on it & whether it would be ok to tow a 16ft caravan?
Hi There, you need to work out what the down ball weight of the van is,then look in the weights plate on the van, the freelander has a tow limit of 2000 kg and a down ball weight of 120 kgs, its not about length, its about weight, all i can say is do your home work, and you don't want the car to work its guts out. if this is your first van it possibly wont be the last, think about the big picture.good luck
Mk
I am looking for some advise please? We are considering buying a 2012 Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 with about 70,000km on the clock. From the reviews I am mixed as some are amazing and others horrendous. It seems as though the older models (pre 2010) are not great but wondering if there's been any experience from the new(er) ones. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Hi Gareth, I can't tell you what the Freelander 2 model TD4 is like from a quality point of view. Yes, reading reviews there seems to be many users who are happy with the product now. My TD4 was ten years earlier, and everyone who knows anything about Land Rovers will tell you that quality control on all models of that vintage and a decade before was extremely poor and mechanical reliability was dreadful.
For interest Gareth there was, a few years ago, on the internet, an international repair shop survey where 1800 repair facilities from around the world were asked to rank vehicle brands (not individual models) for mechanical reliability! Funnily enough Mitsubishi came out best! Most commented that 'They tend to see less of them in for repair than other makes' . The worst by a considerable margin was Land Rover, followed closely by Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, BMW and Citroen! This survey was before the time China entered the market with their 'Great Wall', 'Cherry' and India with its Mahindra......so these results may be different now.
I seem to have lost the link to that survey now....being some years ago but, I am sure if you tried an internet search it could still be un-covered. Sorry I can't be of more help..
Currently own a FL2 SD4 2014 model with 32k on the clock, up until three weeks ago it was a great car, I now have nagging computer problems that while they have not totally let me down Landrover are at a loss as to what is causing the problem. The car has been in three times to fix the issues so far, it's all been on warranty which is great but I now no longer trust the car.
Is it true that there's a problem with the diffs on 209/10 models? mines a setd4
No recalls noted on the australian government web site or Land rovers, not saying there isn't one only I can't find it on the web sites I would check.
I am looking at getting a 2009 or 2010 freelander 2. How long do the diesel engines generally run for in km's?
As a rule of thumb, diesels [if well maintained] ‘run forever’ ~1,000,000km for a taxi; 3-500,000km for a well-maintained private car that does most of its km ‘running hot’. The Freelander diesel is a modified Peugeot motor with a good rep; 2009 will probably be the 118kw/400nm version. Later was 110kw/420nm, uses slightly less fuel, performance ~same. Beware a car that’s been ‘run cold’ – only used for shopping/school-run – unless super-low km; check the service history too.
Freelander2s are notably sturdy & rust-resistant; the best cars ‘never been off-road, used mostly on freeway, always serviced’; worst: ‘lots of short runs, lots of off-road, lots on beach, not washed religiously to rid of salt, little service history’. Check the spare wheel well also.
We absolutely love our 2011 Freelander2 TD4; will probably replace with successor 'Land Rover Discovery Sport' diesel in ~2018.
Thank you for your reply and the information provided. It will be strongly taken into consideration. Will definitely look out for everything. Looking forward to getting one now!!
Jorgejio has said eveything that needs to be said, there was a recall to check on fuel lines, so make sure this was done other than that they should be trouble free if you do your homework on which one to buy.
The FL2 is a great vehicle to buy, buy the latest you can find with the best service history and condition and I'm sure you will be happy.
Engine is PSA (Peugeot group) DW Series motor. It is in Fords, Volvos, Peugeots, Citroens, Land Rovers, Mitsu Outlanders. It has been around since 2004-5 so should be well sorted out I have 2008 2ltr HDi diesel engined Peugeot 308. It has done 145,000klms with no issues. Doesnt use any oil between changes
The engine should be the least of your problems. Check service history and buy on general condition
Of what purpose are the vents under the front seats of freelander 2 and there is an SD card slot under front driver seat but i dont understand why its there. Plz help
I'm of limited help, abhiraj.shaktawat.9. Not sure what you mean by 'vents', sounds like you've got the electric seats (I have mechanical - lighter, simpler, less swish!) Unless you mean the air-conditioning vents directed at the rear-seat passengers? (Those are a good thing, don't block them, or your passengers will be hot/cold when you are fine.)
I have not encountered any SD card slot in my car; (not going looking either, sorry, as my under-seats are a precise tool/accessory storage area) BUT - in many vehicles, the car's main computer is placed there - under-seat, away from dirt and heat. When a fault is detected, the auto-electrician squirms down there, inserts a card, and extracts the codes for interpretation on his/her computer. IE: should be there, not for amateurs. Any auto-electrician could confirm this at a glance.
Enjoy your car; I'm loving mine!!
Hi Bud,
Air vents, don't block them: never seen the SD Card slot buut I think the other answer is a viable one. Have fun with the FL2
My questions are about the Si4 petrol models:
1. How is fuel economy on these?
2. Any reliability issues?
Hi. Can't help you on this, I drive the diesel.
Has anyone had a problem with their Freelander 2013/14 TD4 reversing sensor with a trailer connected? I have installed the genuine Land Rover electric connector harness but the sensor is still active after hooking up the trailer. I was advised by the local dealer (after many visits) that the computer in the Freelander is not able to recognise the LED lights on my trailer and therefore the reversing sensor is not deactivated. (Pretty dumb of Land Rover to remove the manual override for the reversing sensor....)
I have a 2013 Diesel FL2 that I use to tow my 5.2m boat. The dealership purchased me an aftermarket LED Loadbox because I experienced the same problem (not a problem with incandescent globes), I haven't had the problem since. Pretty sure they are made in Australia, Linear Electronic Design, external link - hope this can sort out your problem. Phil T
