Bill, While I've been retired a while, I would say that oil will be Mobil synthetics formulated to meet the GM/Dexros 1 spec, so you can relax and not worry that the GM product isn't up to the job in your Corvette.

I endorse Stephen S comment. That said, do you know what oil type has been used in this vehicle since manufacture? How often was the oil changed? What condition is the engine in? Mileage? Given it's a 2018 model, I would expect it's traveled less than 100,000kms. I'm assuming this is the V6 TDI engine?

We tried to get a Mobil 1 rep to give a question answer at one of our Corvette Club meetings. A year later from saying they would and then they need to get their act together with busy stuff. I'm in 3 Corvette clubs and one of the biggest issues is... "Why this why that" and reason for not using the car on new oil and take it out with 8% oil life left when changed before storing 6 months later. Talked to 2 dealers asking if they ever have seminars put on by Mobil 1. They laugh at me. DEALERS of their product???? Than add in DEXOS-1 and 2 Or Mobil 1. Last time I checked Mobil 1 made them all. When asked at dealers there is two choices DEXOS or Mobil 1. What the heck is the difference and it looks like crap to rip off Customers. Exxon / Mobil [Mobil 1 oil] get your freaking act together.

SkiTragic can't open it sorry but thanks ? I did open up a former employee on Mobil 1 5-W30. I'm not questioning the oil I always have used it. But everyone in the Corvette Club is confused and have the same questions I have? Dealers tell me there is two DEXOS 1 and 2, OK...than they say or use Mobil 1? There both made by Mobil 1? Than there is European 0-W40 and ESP 0-W40. Are they the same? Many dealers I talk to don't have much good to say about management on Mobil 1 products. Saying we are lucky to get it?????? None had any question on how good it was. Back in real life before COVID they had seminars on many products. When asked dealers that.... they laughed.

What make, model and year car do you have troy? Bit more info would be helpful bud. :-)

Hi Leo, does your Crown have the 1MZ-FE 3.0L V6 engine in it? If so, the Mobil 1 DataTek website recommends Mobil 1 5W-30 or Mobil Super 2000 X2 10W-40. external link  Choosing the correct oil viscosity really depends on the climate you live in. There are lots of good websites out there explaining this. If your car is a Japanese import, then the manual will probably state a quite thin oil viscosity, similar to the northern states of USA, as it's quite cold in these regions.

In warmer climates eg. in the Southern hemisphere between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, then you would want to select a slightly higher viscosity of oil, e.g. Mobil 1 5W-30 or 5W-50 if it's really warm.

If you have oil leaks in your engine though, then proper repairs and regular preventative maintenance of your engine really needs to be carried out on a regular basis. Regular engine oil changes with synthetic engine oil (preferably from new), = a happy healthy engine. Hope this helps.

Hi Hans. Redbook shows the only 2006 ML320's sold in Australia to be the ML320 CDI (W164), which is the 3.0L diesel V6 engine. If so, then the Mobil DataTek site recommends Mobil 1 0W-40. Oil Qty is 8.5 litres.

If oil comes out black in a diesel then the detergent pack is doing its job to keep your engine clean. Track down some Motul engine clean/flush rather than wasting your time running through a cheaper syn. It's a detergent based flush rather than solvent like the cheap brands, it works very well.

Have you thought about getting a UOA (Used Oil Analisys) done? That's the only way you're going to know what's really going on inside your engine & how well the oil is holding up. Anything else is speculation. Depending on the resultsite you see 5W40 may not be needed until around 200K.

I think you're wise not running 30K intervals, 20K is a stretch IMO but obviously working fine for you.

Hi Peter080 This is my opinion only and as such; open to variation by yourself and others. 30,000 is a LOT of kilometres - if it was my vehicle I would be cutting that in half or even down to 10,000 km. Synthetic engine oil is so cheap when compared to the cost of parts and labour at pull-downs? I mean - it could only benefit the engine and extend the life. It may even assist with that timing chain noise (if the tensioner is hydraulic).

Agreed with the guys above, I'd stick with Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP, but reduce the oil change interval by half. Lots of soot going into the engine sump (EGR) with modern diesels. Sounds like the oil detergents are doing their job. Agreed that Mobil 1 oil and genuine oil filters are cheap compared to expensive engine repairs. external link  Nick.

From what you have asked i'm getting you do approx 1000 km a month and use 5w50 oil, you haven't however, said what engine it is, is it turbo or NA, what vehicle, driving habits, or stated your manufacturers recommended servicing intervals.

without knowing any information like that it would be hard to give you any kind of advice.

however, it seems like a large spread of oil weights you are using, most modern engines seem to use around a 10w30 or 0w30 for less oil drag on the lighter piston rings they use nowadays,

so in conclusion, we'd need more information.

G'day Dindo, First of all, good on you for using Mobil 1. I have been using Mobil 1 for the last ten years, & have been very impressed with the cleanliness of the engines and of the oil. My vehicles run cleaner, smoother and quieter by using Mobil 1. I personally won't use anything else!

The chap above has a point, but you will find that both your vehicles manufacturer and Mobil 1 will recommend changing your oil and filter at the vehicle's recommended servicing schedules,

There has been a lot of private research done, which you can find on the net, particularly wrt Mobil 1, and how long it will last before the oil breaks down and requires changing.

Probably the true way of testing would be of oil sampling through a laboratory oil analysis. Mobil 1 did it when Mark Skaife drove the HSV Maloo around oz.

If it were me, I'd follow the service schedule regardless of the oil type, e.g. if you have a Toyota, then it's usually 6 months or 10,000kms, which ever comes first. It's your call.
