MTM 72SX Questions & Answers
VerifiedJust wondering what NGK spark plug fits the MTM 72sx, I think i read somewhere that it was a BPMR7A.
Hi Mick, Just a quick note to let you know that the 45cc, 52cc, 60cc, and 62cc chainsaw use an NGK BPMR7A spark plug with an electrode gap of 0.02 ". 38cc saws use an "M7 compatible" spark plug, with an electrode gap of 0.02 ".
The 65cc saws use a Champion CJ-7Y or compatible with an electrode gap of 0.02 ".
These spark plugs are common industry standard items - it's best to take the plug with you when purchasing a replacement locally to make it easy for the retailer to match up one of the many compatible items available from different manufacturers.
Let us know if you require any further assistance. We are here to help!

How do you get to hold the choke out
Hi Robo, You need to pull it out all the way until you hear a click; don't be afraid to really pull it. Don't worry about breaking it. If, for some reason, it does happen to break while following our instructions, please rest assured that you’re fully covered under warranty, provided you’re still within the advertised warranty period. Regards, Jim
Hi Robo, Jim is spot on, takes some getting used to, as it has to be pulled out with a bit of force. Never had it break, so should be ok. Cheers, Chr.
I had the same problem. I removed the air filter to access the carburetor butterfly and simply gave the butterfly a little push while pulling the choke lever. No problems since.
Hi I recently purchased a 72x to see how they actually perform I was impressed for first 1/2 hr until chain oiler stopped working, I,ve checked adjuster screw & tried different settings & flushed out oil tank but to no effect, any ideas wld be appreciated.
Clean oiler hole with degreaser and check no blockage, clean with pick or wire. Hopefully it helps
Hi S.R, We recommend replacing the oil pump and worm drive to resolve the issue. You can find the necessary parts here: external link If you have any further questions or need assistance with a warranty claim, please reach out to our Customer Support team via: external link Regards, Jim
Sounds like a warranty claim. That's unfortunate.
Sorry to hear that. After only 1/2 hour use it should definitely be warranty. Hopefully you purchased from someone reputable like Edison’s who would help for sure. Have not had this issue with either of my two old saws. Leak oil yes but that’s probably my fault for using a thinner engine oil instead of bar oil. I do it so put up with it! Hope your issue is resolved ok.
how mamy drive link on an mtm 58sx 20 inch please
Hi there, All three versions of the MTM 58SX chainsaw, use the same chain specification for the 20-inch bar. Chain Specs: Length: 20" Pitch: 0.325" Gauge: 0.058" Drive Links: 76 If you have further questions or need assistance sourcing spare parts, such as a replacement chain, please feel free to contact our customer support team at support@edisons.com.au
I'm using 76DL Hurricane chain on an MTM 72SX with 20" Hurricane bar.
Hi there, Thanks for the update. As models can vary, we recommend double-checking compatibility between the bar and chain with the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure safe and optimal performance. If you need further help, feel free to reach out our customer support team at support@edisons.com.au
Has anyone installed a ripping chain on a 72 sx wondering if it is any quicker to cut with the grain as I am slabbing large gum trunks and what size is the chain 3/8 etc and where to get one. Cheers
A ripping chain should be quicker as that is what it is designed to do. Talk to Jono and Johno. They should be able to help. I felt the saw was a little under powered for the 24" bar and switched to a 20".
Hi Murray, Our MTM 72SX chainsaw uses the following chain specifications: -Chain Type: Low Kickback Premium Semi-Chisel -Chain Pitch: 0.325" -Chain Gauge: 0.058" -Drive Links: 86 While we don’t supply ripping chains specifically, you can check with your local chainsaw or tool shop for a ripping chain that matches these specs. Ripping chains are often used for cutting along the grain and may offer smoother, more efficient cuts for slabbing large logs. Let us know if you have further questions at external link happy to help. Regards, Jim
Hi Murray, A ripper chain, I would assume it’s what we call a chisel chain would rip better as Peter has mentioned. You can change from .325 to a 3/8” chisel chain to increase chain size if you change segment drive, amount of drive links in chain would alter as well! 24” would have to be kept very sharp, SX82 saw with 24” would be better option. If you already own the saw it’s only the price of a chain to try. I use chisel chain for all my cutting, seems to work fine. Cheers, Chris.
Have a MTM 72 sk bought a month ago was working fine went to use it today and no start. Pulled the plug swapped with NGK equivalent and still nothing. Plug is wet so getting fuel is there any suggestions on where to look for the problem
Hi Murray, I’ll be sending you a private message to assist with your concern regarding the MTM 72SX chainsaw. Please check your inbox at your convenience and feel free to reply directly from there. Regards, Jim
Check for spark by putting the removed plug in contact with the engine when you turn it over. If no spark then it's probably magneto failure, or it could be the plug cap. There's not much else can go wrong. I have a Chinese made lawn mower which has a weak spark. I have to set the plug gap a little tighter than normal or it breaks down. A hacksaw blade is about right.
Just unboxed 72sx nothing in manual telling what the round plastic with thread and seal part is or goes
If you check with Edison’s, they will know, but I’m sure it’s a spare oil pump drive, for if it ever fails!
Hi Murray, The small nylon screw cog is a spare worm drive and it does not need to be fitted to a new chain saw. The worm drive is a component responsible for supplying the chain with oil. If in the future you are having problems with the chainsaw leaking oil or the chain is not getting enough oil, you may need to replace the worm drive, hence, there's a spare. Regards, Jim
I bought a 72SX MTM chainsaw; used once took a long while to put the chain though worked well ; that was two months ago the chain is loose and have tried a number of times to put it back unsuccessfully! Always loose , any help?? I did follow the video with instructions but nothing works very frustrating!!!
Hi Patricio, It's common to look at the front of the chain tensioning shaft (right next to the chain guide bar) and think that the adjustment screw has been stripped, however, the actual adjusting screw is on the side of the saw.
Have another quick look and let us know if there are any issues with the screw on the side of the chain brake mechanism and we'll follow up if necessary.
Kind regards, Jay
Hi, I used this chainsaw twice , brand new out of the box and the Pully rope snapped!!!, where can I get a replacement cover?
Hi Monica, Not sure why the rope broke so quickly! I purchased my two MTM72 saws from Edison.com.au in Surrey Hills Sydney and have found them very helpful on the few occasions I’ve required parts. If you have someone who could fit the rope into your starter, you could obtain it from any chainsaw store close to you. Otherwise a complete starter will cost approximately $30 to $40 to replace. Can you get the supplier of your saw to fix under warranty? Should not have broken that quickly. I broke a starter spring after about 5 years but no broken ropes. They usually start so easily. Good luck, should be easily fixed. Cheers, Chris.
Hi Monica, Please email us through our contact page at external link so we can assist you effectively. Thank you! Regards, Jane
Thanks Mitch do you know if or where I can purchase a mtm sx82 I live in Epping Victoria
Hi Markus,
Our information is only limited to the products we offer. We highly suggest to check online which best place sells this model.
Regards, Jay
Hi Markus, when in doubt go BIG. The bigger the saw the easier it cuts. The chain stays sharp for longer and doesn't need tightening as often. The E start makes starting the big engines a breeze. The bigger engine will use more fuel though. There is little difference between MTM and Baumr Ag available on line from Edisons. The chain bars are soft, bend easily and may even be bent from new. Buy a replacement bar from Jono and Johno online and you're in business for a fraction of the price of a big brand saw. I have tried the cheap chains available online but found, while they cut well, the rivets are soft and they stretch ridiculously fast and then break. Peter
Hi Markus, I own two MTM SX72 , it is a good saw for the price, but as Peter says the SX82 does cut faster, especially if you use the 20" bar! Also correct with chain, put a good one on it, I also installed an NGK spark plug as well. I've purchased all my machinery from Edisons with no issues, and I'm in Tassie. Chris.
Thank's heaps Peter , Chris and Jay I'm going to try the MTM SX72 as no one can tell me nor can I find a MTM SX82 to buy it's like they don't make them anymore maybe or on one is stocking them, apparently Edisons is getting the MTM SX72 on April 20 so I'll order one from you Jay then mate and Peter I'll also get hold of Jono and Johno for a replacement chain and bar and who said size doesn't matter hahaha bahahaha
Nah, sx82 was the Baumr version.
Sorry I'm new just asked my question twice

Different copies of old school zenoah chainsaws
Hi guys and girls just wanted to know how much difference is there between the sx 72 and the sx 62 as in power as there's only 3 cc difference in displacement power is that really noticeable or not?
Hi there Markus,
Thanks for your interest in our products.
Please note that both are similar. 72sx is 72cc, the 62sx is 62cc, but 72sx has a longer bar, both are powerful machines.
Hope this addresses your concern.

Copies of old zenith saws from Japan, 4500/5200/5800
Hi have an mtm 72sx chain brake has stuck on any ideas how to fix this cheers
Hi Hans. Loosen the chain tension 5 or 6 turns, remove the 2 nuts that hold the blade on and remove the cover and brake assembly. See if you can see anything broken, or a piece of wood or sawdust jamming the brake mechanism.
Cheers thanks
mtm72 poor bar quality new everthing cuts huge curve

How to replace pull cord
Hi there! Thank you for reaching out to us. For an instructional video on how to replace the pull/recoil starter of your chainsaw, you can view the Youtube video by clicking this link: external link Hope this helps.

If you contact the Edison’s you will be able buy a complete pull starter assembly if you are not confident in doing it , as it can be a bit tricky , the pull starter has a double spring easy start system, hope this helps , cheers
I purchased a MTM 62SX, got going after a while, initially used 91 Octane Petrol, wouldn’t start, so changed to 98, still wouldn’t start, checked spark plug gap, was too small, adjusted to correct gap. Got it going OK for half and hour on a tree, worked fine. Then did bush and found Chain Brake is now STUCK, taken it off, cleaned it, BUT NOT SURE HOW TO RELEASE TO UNSTICK IT. ANYONE GOT ANY ANSWERS. 10/8/‘22.
Hi Gary you will find the chain brake to be hard to reset when it’s been removed from the saw , the best is to place it in a vice in the same position as it would on the saw and push back the handle as if it were on the saw , it’s going to need a bit of persuasion but it will reset it , just make sure you don’t lock the brake ring in the vice, also change the spark plug to a NGK and keep using 98 , I find after running mine in before cutting wood will give you a very reliable saw , hopes this helps you , cheerio
I did edit my answer but it will reset ok
Thanks Ricky, Yes l did figure it out as you suggested, via a tip from YouTube. I took it partially apart, lubricated it with WD40, then put in a vice and managed to release it as you suggested. Thanks for you responding with your advice, l hope this helps others if they have the same problem.
Recently purchased a MTM 72SX Chainsaw was wondering about putting a new decent chain on it do Stilhl 22” fit or anyone know another decent chain and bar if needed?. Cheers Ray
Hi Raymond, Thank you for reaching us here! We don't normally suggest placing different brand parts to other brand chainsaws so we won't be able to suggest any.
