Telstra Smart Wi-fi Booster Questions & Answers
VerifiedHi. I have a pre used Telstra smart wifi booster 3. How can I connect it to my modem?
>WHAT WIFI PASSWORD IS USED ON THE BOOSTER? Once Booster is registered to a router, it will expand the WIFI network. Same password is used throughout. Ignore WIFI credentials printed under the Booster. >WHAT TO DO ONCE FIRST STEP OF INITIALISATION IS COMPLETE? Once you get the blue light on the booster while it is connected via LAN cable, you can power it off, relocate to another area of the house and connect to power. It will establish wireless connection to router and provide local boosted WIFI. Don't pay too much attention to lights, instead login to the router admin page and observe status there. If router shows the live Booster, in the status, that's all that matters. It will show WIFI signal strength between router and booster and booster and devices. NOTE: If booster is too close to the router, WIFI signal between router and booster will be shown as grey. Gen 3 routers have relatively strong WIFI signal so keeping the booster far is ok. Check signal bars and 2-3-4 bars is good. If low signal, bring booster closer to the router.
Q&A: >HOW MANY BOOSTERS CAN YOU HAVE RUNNING? Up to 4 normally, but capable of more. >MODES OF CONNECTION (VERIFIED)? 1) wired via LAN, providing WIFI in remote area/shed/studio,etc 2) WIFI connection to router within router WIFI range, providing WIFI in second location 3) WIFI connection to router within router WIFI range, providing wired LAN connection at second location. 4) Wired connection to NON-Telstra router, provides WIFI at second location, uses WIFI credentials printed on label under Booster. >BOOSTER IDENTIFICATION: uses last two digits of the MAC address, wired LAN connection, printed on label under booster >CAN BOOSTER BE ALLOCATED A FIXED IP? Yes, connect via LAN, add MAC address to DHCP list, assign wanted fixed IP. Remember to unplug and replug LAN cable into the booster to take up new IP. >BOOSTER STATUS... Best viewed via the Admin page on the router. Connection status, wireless signal strength can be viewed easily. >DEFAULT TELSTRA ROUTER IP (Smart modem 3rd gen): 192.168.0.1 >DEFAULT ADMIN PW: Same as WIFI default password... printed on sticker under router and on magnetic card
Can I hook booster to booster with ethernet cable to keep my speed strong? Can we use different boosters with the Telstra modem?
I have 3 of the gen 3 boosters. Long story short initially all 3 worked. Got fttp reset everything and then only 2 work. The other just purple light…. Over and over did resets. Telstra sent me new one (10 wasted hours 7 people, wrong Information, going INSANE) This new out of box booster doing same thing… purple light … turn off/on as per instructions. Nothing. Again hrs spent trying to restart/reset booster/reset modem. Every thing possible. Just purple . Help please???
Hi, will the Telstra smart Wi-Fi booster operate via my wired network if I leave the Ethernet cable plugged into it? I need it to operate in a steel studio in my garden via an underground Ethernet cable (Wi-Fi from the router won’t penetrate the steel it’s like a fariday cage).
I have a red light on my Telstra booster. What do I need to do to fix this?
First switch off the booster, wait for 30secs then turn it on again. It should start with pink light and finish back with blue light. If it goes red, it might be that it is too far from the modem. You may even have to set it up again from scratch by connecting it to the modem with the supplied Ethernet cable ax per original setup instructions
My Gen 3 booster will turn blue when connected by the ethernet cable to the modem but wont turn blue after disconnecting the cable no matter how long I wait or how many times I try. The suggestions already provided by others have not worked for me.
Did you find a solution, I have the same problem
Same for me. It says to unplug the Ethernet cable and wait for the light to turn blue. But it just stays on red.
The written instructions provided did not help. After numerous times of rebooting it seems that the recalcitrant modem finally did what it was supposed to do in the first place. Having said that, we're not convinced it really adds any value to our household wi-fi.
Press the reset button that will take it back to the start
same problem for me - reset did not work
Having had it for some time now we're convinced it's useless. It has not boosted our wi-fi coverage throughout the house as it is advertised its primary purpose is. It is about to get turfed.
i have the same issue but different outcome, when i try to reset it via instructions when i plug it into the modem it turns blue but when i plug the ethernet back into my pc it goes flashing red what do i do!
I have a gen 3 modem and now have just got a Telstra gen 3 booster The light is green for modem and solid blue but when I try to connect the tv in the other room it comes up with no wifi I am putting in the password for the booster in the second tv and the password for it as well I have tried a few times but to no avail
Good luck. I’ve also had gen 3 boosters in the past, can’t say I was impressed. Worked for a very short while and then they just stop working. Do yourself a favour and get a reputable wifi mesh setup, I went from Telstra booster to Orbi mesh and I can honestly say my connection and wifi coverage has never been more stable. As for your problem with the password, not sure what’s happening there, if you’ve entered it correctly, maybe it’s a faulty booster even straight out of the box.
Thankyou I brought a deco tpg and it wouldn't connect to the modem I'm frustrated with the whole thing
How can Telstra tell that my wifi is not working?
I had the same question, never got a reply from them about it, they can also tell if the Boosters are connected or not as well. I now have WIFI turned off and use a Different Brand Booster for WIFI, Partly because of this but mainly because the Telstra Boosters did not fix the problem.
" PS : When I first read your message I thought you wrote Wife not Wifi :) "
Yeah telstra know what’s connected to your modem router. I added a 3rd gen booster a few months back, worked ok for a few months then decided it didn’t want to connect to wifi anymore. Exactly the same problem I had with the gen 2 booster. Telstra support is pathetic, their “solution” is all scripted, useless! So I scrapped the booster and added an Orbi mesh setup, works like a dream. So if like me you removed the telstra booster, you will get txts from them telling you to reconnect because they can’t “check the quality of your service” rubbish. I’ll never connect the replacement they sent me regardless of how many txts they send. Get a good mesh system instead.
Unless they get the local postie on his bike to check on his way past
I have just installed a gen 3 to my modem. It paired fine but it will not work away from the modem. To me that means they are incompatible - acceptable. The problem is that now the modem will not give a wi-fi ? signal and I have to plug in the booster to get wi-fi. I cannot find a way to unpair the booster. Any ideas? We do have a new modem on the way. Tony P.
After it has finished pairing via ethernet cable and turns blue, disconnect cable and wait for it to turn blue again. Then wait a further 2 minutes being blue before relocating it.
mine will turn blue when connected by ethernet cable to modem but wont turn blue after disconnecting cable no matter how long I wait or how many times i try.
I have exactly the same issue. I have reset modem and booster, even got a replacement booster from Telstra but after pairing with cabling, then disconnecting cabling, booster light turns red immediately and does not ever go blue. Tried Telstra help but get passed from person to person with no actual solution offered!
Same issue, mine will turn blue when connected by ethernet cable to modem but wont turn blue after disconnecting cable no matter how long I wait or how many times I try.
Have the same problem. Has anyone solved this issue yet?
Does anyone have a solution
I have a solution although It is a bit hit and miss you need to pair it through the WPS interface .Bring the booster and modem into the same room and power both up but do not connect via Ethernet. Cable. Perform a hard reset on booster. Press the WPS button ( the bottom one) for about one second at the same time as the WPS booster. The light on the booster will flash orange a the front modem light will flash green. After a while the booster light will flash purple the blue. You may have to perform this process a few times
Have a look at your wifi in the modem gui , see if the 5ghz radio is set to channel above 144 , if it is change auto to one of the other channels below 100 and see if it works
I had the exact problem/circumstances as Mike.S. SOLUTION: Access the modem GUI by typing in "http://mygateway" in Google on your computer. Your password is the one on the fridge magnet (or the one you chose yourself). Click on the "Sign in" button. Click on the "Wifi" panel. Hit the "Advanced" tab. Under "Radio's", Click on the 5Ghz. Click the "Enabled" to the "ON" position. Click on the "SAVE" button below. This fixed ours. Hope it does yours and Happy Days!
Thanks Anthony, your instructions fixed the same issue I had. I was onto Telstra via chat when I found your method, so I have passed the fix onto them also.
I had this issue. Followed the instructions, attempted to set it up this way 10-15 times. I found if I removed the ethernet cable out of the modem first, rather than from the booster, the light would return to solid blue after a couple of minutes as expected, but when I removed the other end of the ethernet cable from the booster it would return to red and stay that way. Up until this point I had the two devices side by side 10 cm apart. The next time before I removed the ethernet cable from the booster I moved it about a metre away from the modem, and guess what? It worked!
Where do i need to place my wifi booster. Our modem is in my office under my desk. I have 3 tv's in the house that are internet capable each one in a different room and all about 4 metres from the modem.
Place your Booster as near as possible to the middle of all your Tv's but still must be in range of your Modem/Router. Unless you have concrete or Metal walls, at 4 metres you should not need a Booster, I would also recommend moving your Modem from under the desk and placing it as far away as the cables allow you from the PC, Phone etc, because of electrical interference.
if only 4m tvs can't be struggled unless you have metal walls. Telstra routers are dual band so booster has to share single 5G bandwidth. The booster is an extension of the coverage at the small expense of speed. use it when only necessary.
Place it in a cupboard until they come and take it away, completely useless in my opinion.
Do have to use telstra wifi booster or can you use any boosters/extenders??
15 years ago Telstra sold to me mobile internet. It was in Victor Harbor SA Seasite Caravan Park. They had theirs Booster in theirs Service car in the park next to the customers. Telstra had some system that switched of the internet after 15 minutes if you don't use it. Once I switched my receiver in it stayed on. 1 months bill 700.00 $AU from bad product.
Are these Telstra todays boosters relatives to the boosters use for theirs mobile internet selling 15 years ago?
No, these systems are not the same.
Hey we have had the boosters for a while now and were working great then all,of a sudden one of them has stopped working I have turned off and back On I have reset tried everything I can think of. The blue light does come on but then goes back to red again. Has anyone had this prob or can any one give me some ideas on how to fix Thanks
I found a great solution to the very same problem. The bin!! The Telstra boosters are just rubbish!
I need to get the signal to the outdoor room about 20 metres away from the house anyone done this?
I would run a Cat5 or Cat6 cable from the Telstra modem to the outdoor room and plug it into the Telstra modem extender.
I've done this, but not with a Telstra Smart Wi-Fi booster
Thanks its a good 20 metres away, what booster did you use Andrew
Can the Telstra WiFi booster be connected to the nbn modem ?
It connects to the Telstra modem that is connected to the NBN. NBN do not supply modems. Modems are supplied by the retailer of the NBN service.
Can I use the Telstra Wifi Booster Gen 2 on a router that is nit from telstra, say a Belkin or TP Link router?
It's difficult to know. You could probably make it work, but you would have to know a lot about networking because normally the Telstra app on your phone steps through the whole process. Doing it without the Telstra modem would be a very manual job.
No... Only with a Telstra Gen 1.1 or a Gen 2 modem. Mike
You can but a bit harder and needs 2 boosters. Also doesn't come with all the capability
i am a telstra customer can i buy in store and cost
Wonder if you have read the information in this document available from Telstra website external link At some stage a Telstra customer was able to order through Telstra Plus or Telstra shop but I am guessing it is all online now. It might help to raise a query on MyTelstra mobile app if you have installed it. Select "get help"and click on the message icon on lower left to type your query.
I have a property with a granny flat signals usually good from the main house and they are close to each other but it’s on and off just curious if anyone has it and gets decent signal out of their house walls
I have a garage adjoining the main house which never received any wifi until I installed the wifi booster in the house. A lot will depend also on what type of walls are involved. Solid brick or concrete will always be an issue
Yeah I have bit of brick but also colour one metal. Thankyou for your reply
Will the wi fi booster plug and play help with buffering to our downstairs t.v. reception.
The wifi booster can help improve the wifi signal to the TV depending on where it is located. Better wifi signal could help internet streaming to the TV provided the internet service itself is not the bottleneck. Best to first test the TV next to the internet service router and confirm this.
