ZTE H268A Questions & Answers
VerifiedMy current Voip home phone (Gigaset) is no longer working after 10 years and I need to purchase another home phone. I am having difficulties finding one that is compatible with my Exetel ZTE Home Gateway ZXHN H268A modem, which is also about 10 years old. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi, does anyone have the latest firmware version for the Zte H268A modem to send (I think it should be version 10)?
ZTE won't provide this as they have some sort of iron clad service & supply agreement with Exetel, and Exetel won't provide it either unless you're still under ISP contract with them and even then they won't given you the actual file, only remotely update it for you without giving you the file. But I did manage to nag them into giving me temporary access to a copy on their servers, which was then deleted again after a couple of days, however I kept a copy… external link
Hi, thank you very much, I have been looking for firmware version 10 of the ZTE H268A modem for a long time. Is this version the latest firmware version of this modem? Is this version compatible and synchronized with this modem? Does it not have lag and WiFi bugs, etc.? And the last question is, have you used this firmware version (10) yourself and are you satisfied? (I am currently using firmware version 9 and I am not very satisfied). Thank you for your guidance.
Yes Mike, I use this software in my ZTE just fine connected to Tangerine 25/10 FTTN and now Mate 25/10 FTTN as well. It is fine. I was told the only mods to the firmware in v10 over v9 were to do with updating the VOIP settings/protocols in the hardware to comply with the latest standards in use. I don't use the VOIP function and in that case updating to v10 makes no difference at all. It will not solve any other pre-existing connection issues or wifi drop-outs you may have. I have this firmware running in two H268A's, my own and a neighbour I look after who has the same setup. To update the firmware, log into the modem using user/pass: admin/Admin@123 and navigate to Management & Diagnosis | System Management | Software Upgrade | Browse | Upgrade and then sit back and let it do its thing without turning off the power obviously. Or else if you're still an Exetel customer then you can call them up and get them to do it remotely for you via the TR-069 function. It is I believe the latest and last firmware version for this modem. As the modem is now obsolete and unsupported by ZTE, I doubt there will be anymore upgrades. They're not going to be adding new features or functionality to a modem that's no longer being sold or supported. HTH.
Admin@123 is the emergency admin password for the H268A that will work no matter what the current password is set to without having to hard reset it back to factory default settings (or so I'm told). It is the password the Exetel spies use to log into it remotely and play around with the settings via TR-069 when you don't know about it without your permission - which is a good enough reason of its own to churn away from Exetel!
My friend, What you mean is that there are two passwords to enter the modem system management (192.168.20.1) (the first is the password chosen by the user and the second is the password admin@123) Did I understand correctly? Thank you for your good advice. (Thank God I'm not an Exetel customer ) What can be done through the USB port (is it possible to connect a 4G dongle or to play content by connecting a flash drive or hard drive to the modem)?
If you know the password you've set for the modem, then you are free to use that. If you've just bought the modem second hand or salvaged it from a bin or someone else who doesn't use it anymore and you don't know what the password is, then Admin@123 will work. Any correct password will work to allow you to upgrade the firmware. There are no restrictions to the menu options available depending on which password you use. If you can get in with any password, then you're in. It's that simple. Don't second guess it, it's not that complicated. If you know the password then use that. If you don't know the password, then use Admin@123. If some idiot has changed the username from admin, then you might have to hard reset back to factory defaults if admin/Admin@123 doesn't work, but I've never come across a modem that's had the username changed from admin, so I can't say what would happen if that's the case. I believe the USB socket has been disabled by the firmware provided by Exetel. It is non-functional and redundant now. Crippled by Exetel custom firmware. The modems in Australia were all supplied by Exetel and given away for 'free' to signees to Exetel internet plans. As such they are custom configured to benefit the remote access Exetel wanted to have over their customers. Functions that might be able to be used to reconfigure the modems or to get them to do things that Exetel didn't want their customers to do, were summarily disabled in the custom firmware they installed on them by remote TR-069 access. USB access was one of those things Exetel deemed unnecessary and potentially dangerous to their programme of spying on and remote monitoring of their customers.
Extel modem ZTE H 268A are they locked if you change provider ?
No
Hi will this work to a peak performance with Extel NBN
Works fine for me with FTTN. It is not locked to a provider. And, since it defaults to Exetel after a factory reset, it would be a good choice.
What is the supply voltage tolerance?
No idea, but if yours is playing up or acting weird/dropping connections, then read my review which describes how I repaired mine with photos. external link
Hi, I have H268A provided by exetel a year ago, now I have taken Spintel hfc nbn. I have successfully configured the model to connected to the internet. But I am not able to register my phone with VOIP. I have Sintel authentication username and paswd, and sip Proxy Server address. But I am not able to register my phone with VOIP. If i make a call, (mobile or 8 or 10 digit) all i get is 35 seconds of silence, then a engaged tone. at that point the modem shows my phone number is "unregistered". Could anyone advice how to sort this problem?
I have H268A provided by exetel a year ago, now I have taken tangerine hfc nbn, any chance of getting links from where I can do the setup? tangerine has given isp authentication username and paswd.
i just did this and the instructions from tangerine were pretty useless but i figure it out using google on my phone. This modem isn't locked so can be used for byo modem.
Hi guys, I got an Exetel modem (ZTE ZXHN H268A). I have been having it for a year and have not had any issues. My question is, how can I tell if it is locked for Exetel use only or not? Reason being, I am thinking of changing provider because now NBN is within my area and found there are some better options available in the market so I want to know whether I need another one. Thanks in advance!
H268A can be used for another provider, provided you know the account name and key, and VOIP info.

external link Apparently tangerine uses PPPOE so use that tab. Also make sure you have the correct username and password. Type it in correctly. Last thing it looks like tangerine uses VLAN tagging so type 100 for that.
Trying to extend wifi range using a NETGEAR 1200 extender but wps light on ZTE router goes solid green initially then goes blank. Extender wps light stays green and as trying to establish connection is close to router. Any reason for this? Alastair
Are you with Exetel? If so are you using the latest ZTE Exetel firmware? https://exewiki-production.s3.amazonaws.com/H268A_V1.0.1_ETL.1T9_firmware.bin
Before I placed my order for NBN, inclusive of this ZTE H268A router, I was not made aware of the fact that the USB port is disabled by the manufacturer - the spec sheet illustrates the location of the port but no mention is made of its not being usable! If this is so, why is it??

this router has NO PARENTAL CONTROLS...
Dose ZTE H268A come with a built-in analogue terminal adapter., so that I can still use my old desk phone?
Yes. ATA adapter build in. Just plug in your analogue/old phone.
Can you create additional WLAN SSIDs (apart from default 2 which are for 2.4GHz and 5GHz)? Also I need to create separate isolated Guest WiFi SSID, is it possible on this router/modem as it is on TP-LINK?
Is this correct? USB port has been disabled by the manufacturer so you can't use it to plug in a storage device. Hopefully someone fron Exetel will respond - see if they care !?
Yes - because I tried plugging in a USB hard drive and I cant get it to work Yes - because on the modem web menu did not have the option to manage a storage device.
Many thanks, will go elsewhere...
Do ZTE modems come with DD-WRT pre installed?
What WIFI USB adapter works with this modem router?
Yes, it supports 802.11 g, n and ac. 2.5ghz and 5ghz. HOWEVER, my oppo phone wont detect the 5ghz signal unless I change the channel setting to anything but auto, in the modem web menu.
