Hello fellow caravan owners. Our van is 18 months old, currently we have had two cracked windows replaced a diesel heater tank which split. The same two windows that were replaced 12 months ago have cracked again in the same place, top right hand corner. From what I hear this is not a isolated problem, on the contrary, many caravan owners have had the same issues. Zone RV say its a Dometic problem....who is passing the buck. I have yet to hear from Dometic regarding the replacement of the current cracked windows. They are within 12 months...just!!

Collectively as a group what can we do?? I will pursue this with Zone RV if it keeps on happening and also with Dometic.

Hi Kelly, 2 years ago I had an issue with the Dometic blinds fitted to my Concept caravan. One was replaced under warranty within the warranty period but a second failed outside this period. Neither Concept nor Dometic wanted to know about it. In fact I am still waiting on a reply to several emails sent to Dometic. I believe they have a one/too policy, once you buy it too bad. Unless there is no alternative my next caravan will not have any Dometic parts fitted to it. I hope you have more success than what I have had but i'm not confident best wishes Peter Butler

Hi Kelly- I have a very simple policy with Dometic. If an item bears the Dometic name, I refuse to purchase it. Nevertheless, I have still been caught, as brands such as Waeco & Air Command now appear to be owned by Dometic, as are undoubtably many more. However, your window problem sounds as though it may be related to movement in the caravan frame. If the van frame is overly flexible, and a rigid window is attached to it, the window will brace the frame and try to stop movement. Unfortunately, the window would not be of sufficiently heavy construction to perform this function over time, and would eventually crack to allow the original flexibility to resume. Since your second set of windows have cracked in identical positions to the first, I would suspect that this may be the case. That is, they are cracking along the stress lines. Good luck with it. Steve

HI Steve, I do tend to agree with you regarding the van frame. I did mention this to Zone RV but they deny that that could be the cause, it is a Dometic problem!!. I wish I knew about the Dometic reputation before we bought the van, but I dont think there is much as an alternative out there. Thanks for your input.

Hi Kelly. I am in a similar situation as you. 4x windows cracked and were replaced under warranty then 12-14months later they cracked again. Have you had any luck with getting them replaced?

Kelly B
Kelly B

HI Gray....yes we have had them replaced. I thought that if the replacement windows cracked within 12 months they would be still under warranty. Unfortunately not, the warranty is from the date of the original purchase of the van. After a few emails back and forth to Dometic they finally agreed to replace the windows however we had to have them installed at our own cost. I still was not happy about having to pay for the installation, so I forwarded all the correspondance to Zone RV. Zone were happy to install the windows for us at no charge and also check the window frames. I think initially Zone may have been a bit reluctant to acknowledge that there was a problem, however after speaking with them they are definitely well aware that the problem seems to be with Dometic. Zone had a van in their showroom, which had never been on the road and one of the windows cracked. Zone seem to think that where the perspex is attached to the blade, at each end of the window the blade is pinched onto the perspex to stop it from sliding out. This pinching is possibly too tight and may be causing the windows to crack as in our case each time the windows cracked it was in the same place, top right hand corner. Zone have been very good in acknowledging the problem and will continue to support us if we have any other cracking issues. Good luck with it all , I hope it all works out.

Hi Kelly i have had no Luck dealing with Dometic. All i can get out of them is that the windows are out of warranty so they will not replace them. And have tried the trick that i see being used many times when their windows crack, is asking what type of cleaning product i have used. Dometic Adveritse you will be satisfied with your windows for the lifetime of your vehicle, thats a short life. My next step is to contact Fair trading etc.

Hi I have just read your comments currently going through NCAT with Jayco and Dometic. Does anyone wishes to let me know how they went in finding out why the windows continually crack??

We believe its because of the way they shave the top of the window to fit the fin and how when its hot the double glaze expands.Jayco now have windows in some of their vans with little airhole grommets in the corners

Has anyone else had problems with the dometic seitz windows. We have had 2 replaced and now 2 more due to cracking. The blinds and screens aren't much good either. We have been in touch with consumer affairs so will see how we go when we take it in next week to have them replaced. The first lot that cracked weren't even in our rv for weeks. They are not even 4 years old so obviously they are not fit for the conditions they were built. The first 2 years we were home babysitting so no road travel.

Any replies would be appreciated. thanku.

We haven't had problems with windows but our awning was only 2yrs.old and it shrunk and delaminate took it to consumer affair but in the end Dometic won.I think they get away with so much because they are so Rude and a big company.

Cannot agree with you more. All Dometic products are RUBBISH !!! We have had problems with numerous Dometic products fitted to our van. Even when it was less than 2 yrs old. They are an UNCONSCIONABLE company to deal with & as we were travelling for over 2 years they made it difficult to do the right thing so I had them repaired & or replaced at my cost. My suggestion is to spread the negative word (people power) about them to all but especially to caravan dealers informing them of your experience & how much you detest their crappy, inferior , not fit for purpose products that should not be fitted to a van or a billycart for that matter !!

Let them also know of the product reviews

Thanku for the replies and we well fight it not just for us but for future customers. I can't understand how such a big company keeps getting away with it.

I work in the industry and it seems across the board what ever brand all of the inner blind assemblies with frame incorporating the blind and screen are absolute crap.most dont last 12 to 18 months before they start coming unaligned and not working.for what they cost it's cheap chinese trash put in expensive caravans

We actually had a Chinese built Van previously and the Windows were far superior to Dometic. We had absolutely no issues in 2 years with them with the current Dometic it's only been 8 months and already issues.
