I just finished painting a timber desk. I sanded it, used an undercoat/primer and have applied 2 coats of Dulux Aquanamel paint in Black. I’m very happy with how it looks but it’s marking/scratching really easily! Does it just need more time to cure?
Hello Erin, Thank you for reaching out! The coating will remain soft for 7-10 days whilst it fully cures, so you will need to be gentle with the coating in this time. Please bear in mind the product is not scratch-resistant.
It is important not to use knives, pens or other instruments to cut, smash, or otherwise impact the surface. These activities should always be done on a separate cutting board or protective mat.
Where possible, lift and move heavy items from the surface, to avoid pushing them across and potentially causing damage.
I hope this information offers some assistance! For any further advice please contact our technical team on 13 25 25 (option 2).

I am painting a cream shiny plastic cabinet. I have a dark blue in aquanamel do I need to use a dark blue undercoat first to cover the cream and then use 2 coats of the aquanamel ?
Hi Jan.C We recommend using a primer that creates adhesion for shiny surfaces, it is called PRECISION® Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer. This primer creates a bond between the surface and the topcoat of Aquanamel. This primer cannot be tinted therefore you may need extra coats of the Aquanamel to get the desired coverage for the dark blue. If you would like to discuss the type of plastic the cabinet is with our team to ensure it can be painted please call 132525 (option 2) Thanks Dulux Australia
Hi I’m repainting some outdoor cast iron chairs. I have removed all loose paint and sanded. Next I was going to prime with Dulux 1 step oil based primer the apply Dulux Aquanamel semi gloss top coats. Will this work? Thanks Joanne
Hi there! We recommend a specialised primer from our Precision Range, instead of Dulux 1 Step Prep for cast iron. Please give our team a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we'll recommend the best primer for your chairs so you can enjoy them before summer! Thanks, Dulux Australia
Can I paint Aquanamel over oil based enamel?
Not recommended
I’ve painted shower with this product is there anything to put as a top coat to make it not peel?
Hi Matt, We do not recommend this paint for showers. Peeling occurs when the paint does not adhere to the substrate, so applying additional coats will not prevent peeling. However, we do have a range that is suitable for showers, so we recommend you give our technical team a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) to chat about the best way to get a great result! Cheers, Dulux Australia
Would I have to strip this back and add the recommended product?
Hi Matt, It can depend on how you prepared the surface previously. It'd be best to speak with our technical team who will be able to give advice tailored to your project. We hope to speak with you soon! -Dulux Australia
Hi Can I use Dulux aquanamel semi gloss over oil based paint on my interior doors.
Water based over oil based not recommended
For painting deck railings should I use weathershield semi-gloss or the aquaenamel semi-gloss?
Best to ask your paint specialist as I am just a happy amateur !
Hi Michael, Great question! Both paints would do the job, but you may consider how much mechanical touching the railing gets. If it is more decorative, Dulux Weathershield will have better colour retention, but if you will be touching the rails regularly, Dulux Aquanamel will be more durable and resistant to chipping. For extra durability, you could also look at Dulux Aquanamel Gloss. We hope this helps and if there is anything else we can assist with, please feel free to reach out to us on 13 25 25. Thanks, Dulux Australia
Ive painted new indoor doors with semi gloss, they look great but still feel rough
Hi Rosanne, We can help with that! If you give a light sand and recoat you can try to achieve a smoother finish, but we can also help with tips and tricks from our friendly team. Please feel free to give us a call on 13 25 25 (option 2) and we will help you get the best finish! Thanks, Lucy at Dulux
Hi - Is Aquanamel self priming ? ie can I apply to bare new pine without a undercoat first ? Cheers Mal
Hi Malcolm, For bare timber, you will need to use a primer first. We recommend using Dulux 1 Step Prep (oil-based) as it will prime, block tannins and stains for the new timber, and is compatible with all Dulux Aquanamel paints. If you'd like any further help with your paint project, feel free to give us a call on 13 25 25. Thanks, Lucy at Dulux
I have an old 1950’s fibro home and it’s bathroom walls and shower recess are lined with Tilux Sheeting which is said to contain asbestos, therefore, no sanding. I am planning to paint over the original ugly pink sheeting in the bathroom and shower. I was recommended Zinsser B.I.N Primer. Would Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss be suitable to paint over this primer and not peel or grow mould in the shower? Thank you.
Hello there, we do not recommend using our products over other brands such as Zinsser as the products may not be compatible. For the best advice please contact our Help & Advice Team on 132525 (option 2). The Dulux Team.
Can I paint aquanamel semi-gloss over weathershield gloss?
As long as it’s in a sound condition, and you sand to a dull finish, it should be fine. But I would confirm with Dulux. Be interested to hear how you go.
Hi Graham Thank you for your enquiry. If your current Weathershield coating is in good condition, that is, no flaking or peeling it is possible to use the Dulux Aquanamel as a new coating. Dulux recommends that you sand the current surface to a dull finish then apply one coat of the Dulux 1Step Water Based Primer Sealer Undercoat. The application of the primer will assist with the adhesion of the Dulux Aquanamel to the Dulux Weathershield coating.
Once the Dulux 1Step Water Based Primer Sealer Undercoat is dry you will then be able to apply the recommended two coats of the Dulux Aquanamel.
All the very best with your project, and please feel free to make contact with Dulux Customer Service, 13 25 25 Option 2, for any further assistance. Regards, The Dulux Team

Hi I am painting my woodwork which was previously painted in a oil based gloss, with aquaenamel. Can you please tell which primer to use. Thanks Sara
Hi Sara, for old glossy enamel we recommend to sand to a dull finish you will need to prime using one coat Dulux Maximum Strength Adhesion followed by two top coats Aquanamel. Happy to answer any other queries you can call us on 13 25 25 (option 2). All the best
cheers and thank you !
How long after I have applied the aquanamel can I apply a top coat of polyurethane? 30 degree days so very warm
Hi there Where are you wanting to apply the polyurethane? To a different surface in the same room or over the Dulux Aquanamel? The Dulux Aquanamel is a stand alone product, requiring no clear coat to be applied to the product.
I have used it on a hutch and coffee table so want to put a couple of coats of polyurethane for extra protection
The Dulux Aquanamel is considered a stand alone product, no top coat required. If you would like further technical assistance on your enquiry please feel free to contact the Dulux Technical Team. 13 25 25 option 2
Hi there, what timber putty/sealer would you recommend to use with a Aquanamel paint on timber skirting as I have got bubbles on all the nail holes previously filled, under latex then double coated in aquanamel? I was told Aquanamel draws water out of the sealers?? Any recommendations to ensure no bubbles?
When using Aquanemel I prepared the old surface well before using Dulux 1 step pre coat paint before applying the Semi Gloss. Had no problems with the Polyfilla for Doors and Trims product to fill holes etc.
Thank you - Yes, used total prep prior to 2 coats of aquanamel, but since the application (over 6mths) the putty has been drawn out of the hole to make a bubble... was told if the putty/filla was water based it would do this?? Just thought I might be able to see the names of product recommended for prep with this paint.

I think I've just painted over the top of Enamel paint with Aquanamel - I painted the trim 24 hours ago and it scratches off easily. The sample I took to the Dulux center for colour matching must have been different to the area I just painted. How do I fix this!?
From what I’ve read, you needed to sand the old oil based enamel paint surface first, then clean with sugar soap and put a primer on, otherwise won’t stick. I’m in process of looking into doing same and there’s a lot of prep work first before can put acrylic paint over enamel oil based.
Hi Elizabeth, thank you for making contact with us and reaching out for assistance! Hello, I have sanded, primed and now painted some old furniture in Aquanamel semi gloss. Can I leave as is or will I need a top coat of some sort? I’m concerned with the dining table in particular. Cheers.
Hi Bry, thank you for reaching out to us with your enquiry. We would suggest at least 3 coats of Aquanamel semi gloss for best protection due to high contact. If you need any further assistance please contact our Help & Advice team on 132525 option 2 Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST. The Dulux Team
