I was told that if you take $1000 excess choice that this is not recognized by government as having hospital insurance Is this correct

Yes that appears to be the case. See the HCI guide to cover PDF, page 11 where the $1000 excess option says: * Not exempt from Medicare levy surcharge

We chose this option and were then told it was hidden in their pdf. Very dishonest

That's the law - Medicare Levy only relates to hospital cover, not extras cover.

I'm interested in your experience in processing of claims with HCI. Being in NSW, do they have a comprehensive list of their preferred health service providers and private hospitals?

I have not yet had to claim with HCI as I am a fairly new member myself, however my experience dealing with them over the phone has been very positive. I certainly did my homework to find them, I researched every private health insurer for several months, read reviews, compared policies, looked at all the government reports. What I like about HCI is they are not for profit, they have one of the highest retention rates, low out of pocket expenses, no trickery, they are completely honest about everything up front. Go to the HCI website external link & click on Members > Hospital Search or Doctor Search or Hicaps, to find providers the have agreements with. They cover all the private hospitals in my area and some of the specialists doctors. I have used HCI to make claims through HICAPS with dentists physios etc. without any problem
