2011 Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 Diesel it’s timing chain or belt if yes, how many miles should it be changed?

JonD
JonD

ASX 1.8 Diesel should have a timing chain. Engine code should be 4N13. Timing chain should not need replacing under normal driving conditions for the life of the engine.

Vadims K.
Vadims K.

You are total bonker, every belt is 60k and every chain is 100k miles.

JonD
JonD

Extract from Carsguide.au if you require and plant other sources available for further info: "The timing chain, meanwhile, is preferred by some manufacturers because it should last the lifetime of the engine and never need replacement. This isn’t always the case, however, and some engine designs from a variety of manufacturers suffer problems in this regard. But, in a properly maintained engine of sound design, the timing chain should never need attention, while the rubber timing belt generally requires periodic replacement, typically between 60,000 and 120,000km depending on the manufacturer." Neither the petrol nor diesel engines in the Mitsu ASX have been shown to have any timing chain issues (Google if you want). Timing chain should last life of engine /250K km unless you drive like you stole it and /or believe that regular servicing is the next owner's responsibility.

We have recently brought a 2010 ASX and having continuing problems with the dash. It highlights that we have problems with multiple issues coming up at once RACV have come out an cleared it when we had our first warning, and last week many problems came up such ACS, ABS braking system, engine light all at once etc We took it to our local mechanic and they cleared all the messages, we drove it around and parked for awhile to find that the issue all popped up except for the Engine light. I have been told to take it to Mitsubishi dealer. However before I do that I need to know if this is a problem with this make, model and year being the first one out. Can you help

JonD
JonD

Hi. No issues with my 2014. What is the general condition of the vehicle and mileage? There are plenty YouTube videos to reset error codes, but some may need specialised tools to reset. You also need to check if there is a fault with the systems before resetting

Hi I have 2012 4x4 ASX 155,000 on the the clock, it's reg serviced , Do i need to change timing chain?

JonD
JonD

Timing chains should last the life of the engine, unlike timing belts that need regular replacing. If the veh is driven normally, the timing chain should last over 250000km.

Drove 2010 Mitsubishi as today road noise was very loud. Is this normal.

Nek
Nek

Yes Bruce. The original fit Dunlop SP sport tyres were very noisy. I tried Perelli P1 tyres, and they were quieter but only lasted 40,000 Km. I highly recommend Michelin Primacy 215/65R16 tyres for an ASX XA - I bought my second set of 4 during a JAX stocktake sale for $720 fitted. My first set of 4 lasted 100,000Km.

I'm in the market to buy a Mitsubishi ASX 2012 Glx Sport,if I'm not mistaken it has a timing chain, the car has done a regular service and stands at 150000 km on the clock when should the timing chain be replaced and does that include the water pump and lifters...

JonD
JonD

Hi. Timing chain should not have to be replaced for the life of the motor, unless the vehicle has had a hard life - the general condition of the vehicle should show any signs of abuse. I presume tensioner should be replaced when replacing the timing chain, water pump, not so sure. 150K km is not excessive mileage, ASX 2.0lt motor should be good for over 250K km when serviced reqularly.

i have a 2014 mitsubishi asx and just lately after a long run i get a ticking sound inside the car.icant hear it under the bonnet just in the car.ive tinkererd around and found nothing and it doesnt seem to always be there only on a long run.

Michael
Michael

Ticking sounds can be caused by many different reasons depending exactly where they are coming from. Noisy or incorrectly adjusted valves is a common one. Low engine oil level or overly dirty oil can also restrict the oil flow to the valves. Even the wrong viscosity oil can do it. These are usually more audible on startup, but can be heard all the time as the problem worsens. Other things such as a water pump bearing starting to fail can also make ticking or other noises. Belts and alternator and water pump and pulley bearings can also make noises. If it occurs when the wheels are turned it can be the CV joints. Timing chains can also make noises, especially if the tensioners are not adjusting correctly. Some noises get worse or better when you slowly rev the engine, compared to idling speed. Another one can be the air con fan bearing, or the cooling fan bearings, if they are switched on after a long run when the engine is very hot. These are just some of the possible causes, so I suggest you take the car to a reliable mechanic and let them diagnose where the noise is coming from and determine what may be causing it. They usually have special auditory devises to listen and determine where the noise is coming from. Good luck, and please let us know what the problem was.

TREVOR B.
TREVOR B.

thanks michael thats been a gr8 help.personally i think it might be the air con bearing as we did a long hot 400km run and i was playing around with the air conditioning.just short runs doesnt seem to set it off.i might consult a mechanic to see what can be done.thank you again and i will keep in touch.

JonD
JonD

You can hear ticking sounds when the motor is off after a long run as the hot parts cool and contract (exhaust, heat shield etc). But these should be audible under the bonnet, not so much inside the vehicle. Also these sounds should be there after almost every long hot run, not just all of a sudden.. Michael gives lots of options for the sound, maybe its from one of them.

If you've got the 4B11 motor 2.0lt, timing chain. I think most of the engines in the range have timing chains from 2010 onwards.

Hi. I have a rattle in my ASX. Seems to be coming from the back. Is really noisy when I hit the high speeds on the highway. Any idea. I've had mechanics look at it. No luck. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

JonD
JonD

Not possibly the exhaust vibrating at certain revs and knocking on chassis or other underbody parts. Maybe rev car slowly up in neutral till you get to highway revs and see if someone at rear of car can locate the rattle.

The service manual refers to a belt for some engine models. Find out your engine model and refer to the service manual. Also see below.

When does my timing chain for my Mitsubishi asx 2012 model need to be replaced?

JonD

Timing chain should last the life of the vehicle. No need to change it.

jess

Some are every 5 yrs or 100,000 kms or not at all for the ASX. You need to know your engine type. Look for a rectangular silver plate attached to one of the side walls in the engine compartment. There will be two. One with the engine type, transmission type, colour paint code. The other will be another which will have the Vehicles Vin number. Then refer to the service/ warranty manual that came with the car that will also differentiate between 2WD/4WD, diesel or petrol. If you need an idea of the cost Lubemobiles website will give you an instant quote online without all the BS that oftens with trying to get a simple quote. You can just have the belt changed but if you are going to keep the car everyone will agree its best to have the full kit job i.e water pump, pulleys, thermostat etc

for ASX 4A92 gasoline engine, when is time to change the timing chain? my car have 207000 km already thanks

Saculjh
Saculjh

My son is a mechanic & he said the timing chain should be done at 200,000 kms which differs to popular belief that they last for the life of the car. One busted timing chain means one busted engine.

Looking at a Mitsubishi asx aspire diesel 2011

It has 250000ks on the clock it drives quite nice

Just wondering how much longer it has in it?

Kingo

Hi Jacob. That is a lot of kms for it's age. You would need to have it checked out by a mechanic you trust. A diesel engine with that amount of kms on it would concern me. Hope this helps. Kingo.

Pretty hard to even guess an answer on this.

What sort of noise is it, and from where does it come from?

Only guess I could make would be, that it could be a slipping fan belt.c

Sorry that's the best I can offer for now.

How much km when replace belt timing?

warptec
warptec

This car does not use a timing belt, it uses a timing chain. There fore it will last longer. Most timing chains dont really need to be changed but to be safe I would say after 200,000km.

My car wont start after I started it and moved it a few feet up the driveway and turned off within a few seconds. When I came back to it a few hours later it wont start.

All lights come on and the engine hums but wont turn over.

I heard there was a weird thing that prevented re start if the car was driven only a couple of meters and stopped.. like a safety feature or anti theft etc

Anyone experienced this?

Darl
Darl

Hi Lisa,

You have to make sure you have the clutch in when start it other wise it will not start. It is a safety thing.

Hope this helps.

Ross M.
Ross M.

Darl, you are not alone! I know somebody with exactly the same problem. It first happened a year ago. The Mitsubishi dealer sent a mechanic to her home and he told her never to move it a short distance and then turn it off. He took a while to get it going and charged her $100.

Last Sunday she moved it out of range of a tree branch that looked as if it might come down in the gale-force wind. On Tuesday it wouldn't start and the dealer said that they had nobody available to come the two kilometres to her for three days. (!!)

I went to see what I could do and found that the engine had absolutely no compression - as if the valves (or at least one valve in each cylinder) were stuck open. It spun over very freely on the starter. ( Anybody who has tied to start a car that has broken a cam belt will know exactly what an engine with no compression sounds like. No bad noises, just spinning over on the starter very smoothly and fast.)

I used my jump start to help it crank, and after 20 seconds or so it began to get some compression in one cylinder, then two, and eventually it stuttered, started to fire, and then quite suddenly it was running absolutely perfectly on all cylinders. No problem since, and no fault codes found with an OBDII scanner.

I have had about 50 years' experience working on cars and I have no idea what the cause could be, but if I do find out I will publish it here.

Hi

I am looking to buy an aspire 2010 with 150000km

Is this going to be breaking down now or do you think it has a longer life still?

Please help me

CK

Lou
Lou

Hi Chris. If the car is a manual gearbox, I would expect it's life a good bit longer, auto and would not touch it by the feel of ASX auto. Poor performance boxes the autos. Ensure the service history is up to date and complete. Use your judgement on the general condition of the car and you may be surprised. Regards, Lou
