Smeg ECF01RDAU (Red) Questions & Answers
VerifiedMPNs: 18695, 679674 and ECF01RDAUHi, my Smeg efc01 espresso machine has a problem. After turning it on yesterday and waiting for it to heat up, it then started flashing all 3 buttons, 3 times, repeatedly. It won't respond to any button pressing and I've tried a factory reset. I removed the bottom cover to clear some debris from the water inlet and noticed some debris also in the water tube. I didn't want to dismantle any more but thought there might be a blockage somewhere inside. I couldn't find anything in the troubleshooting section of the manual or any useful google results. Can you tell me if this is a recognisable, easily rectified fault? Cheers Nick
Hi there, I have cleaned my smegg machine several times but it continues to flash orange. Can you help? Annette
Could you possibly mean that you "descaled" your machine several times? If so, Power off the machine on the side and remove the power plug for 5 minutes then switch back on. If the orange light still comes on, turn the steam lever on to dispense some hot water into a cup. If that solves the problem, I suggest that you turn down the water temperature as per the manual.
It sounds like it's still indicating the descaling alert (orange light) despite your cleaning efforts. This could happen if the machine's descaling process wasn't fully completed or if the system didn't register it. Try these... - Check the descaling process, ensure you're following the exact steps in the user manual for descaling. Double-check that the descaling solution is appropriate and mixed correctly. - After descaling, some models require a manual reset to turn off the orange light. - If the water hardness isn't set correctly, the machine might require more frequent descaling. Adjust this as per the manual.
Hope this helps.
When 2 lights flash orange, the heating temperature is too high; cool as per page 6 of the instruction manual; also, the water tank may not be correctly inserted. If all lights flash orange, you will need to have the machine serviced.
My Smeg coffee machine has just 'died'. I've checked the plug, the water, tried a different socket, but nothing?? Is there a reset to factory settings option on the buttons? Mark
Do you mean that the machine does not respond, light up, etc.? If so, I suggest that either the fuse or the main board has blown due to a power surge or lightning strike. In that case, the only remedy is to book it into Smeg.
Thanks, I will do so. Appreciate the response
I have enjoyed my fire-engine red espresso machine for 3+ years, my only problem is a few times I let the water tank run out, and the machine stops working. I have found that after a week or so it somehow fixes itself. However this time round it has been over 2 weeks, and I fear that my machine is dead. Any suggestions?
That's happened to me, I run some water through the steam and and that seems to fix it
Thanks Nick I tried that before to no avail, but after trying this time it is all up and running. Time fixes everything!
All three lights are flashing at the same time (not in sequence). Holding down the steam button for 10 seconds does not access the reset menu. Is my machine broken? Please help.
Hi. Yesterday I followed the procedure descale my machine, but light kept flashing. Repeated descaling today, still flashing. Help please.
My lights been flashing for years. Are you talking about the steam light? If so I just ignore it.
Yes Di - instructions said flashing light = descaling time, but the damn thing keeps flashing!!
Hi Sharon M, After you have completed the rinse portion of the descale cycle, press and hold the steam button until the remaining water is purged from the system. The orange light should then switch off. Regards Smeg
Hi! Can you advise the proper product for descaling the machine? Is it possible to use the distilled vinegar and water like others? Also, I found it difficult to remove the nozzle to clean; any videos of instructions available? Thank you so much for your support!
I use Breville coffee machine cleaner tablets. I break one up a bit then drop it in the water tank and let it dissolve.
We received this machine for Christmas.2019. We love it, however since we started using it the orange light, indicating that the machine needs descaling has come on 4 times (today is 1 April 2020). I have completed the descaling process 3 times, once with descaling solution about a month ago. The light came on again today. Can someone please tell me if there could be a problem or is this common. We average about 5 coffees a day. Thank you
I have the same problem and can’t find anything anywhere that may have the answer. Iv only had mine for 4 weeks
Hi Natalie, You will need to adjust the water hardness to soft and that will extend the time you will have to descale. Please refer to your instruction manual for further information. Regards Smeg
I have hard water in my area. Why would I select soft water that will destroy my machine Giving my machine away buying a breville duo my family has them with no problems and easy to read instructions and no problems with flashing orange lights that won’t turn off after descaling I’m over this smeg machine
Dear Marcia, Please call our customer service team on 02 8667 4888 and they will be able to assist you. Regards Smeg
The steam button is orange. What does that mean?
It needs descaling. All coffee machines do. Read the manual for what to do
i have misplaced my manual What does the flashing red light mean on my smeg cofeemaker? Located in the front of machine underneath the clock reading
Hi Lee - Thank you for your question, it is possible that the machine needs descaling when the orange light is lit up. The steps to descale are in the instruction booklet, can you email us direct: info@smeg.com.au and we can email you a copy of it Kind Regards, Smeg Australia.
I have a new Smegsm pump expresso machine. The coffee I have been making is too weak. I have used the same ground and type of coffeee in a stovetop machine and the strength is fine. Have you any suggestions? I think I have set the temperature to 'high'.
I would l also like to make steamed milk with less froth? is that possible?
Hi, I had the same problem when I got the SMEG. The grounds I was using for the stove top percolator made the coffee weak in the SMEG. I grind them finer and I make sure it's packed in firmly and evenly. I leave about half a centimetre clearance.
I don't like frothy milk so I microwave my milk for twenty seconds in the cup then put in under the machine.
Heat hasn't made that much difference I've found, it just determines how long you have to wait before drinking
Hi Smeg,
I’ve had my machine a month now and have purchased a bag of locally ground coffee.
I’m finding that the filter cups are coming or very wet, and hard to dispose of the coffee inside them.
I’m new to home coffee machines and any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
We are on our third replacement machine. Same problem AGAIN. For the record, I'm a Consultant Engineer. I used to write technical manuals for robotic products:
So this latest machine now has the orange flashing light. Nowhere in the manual does it state what a FLASHING orange light means. Our first machine had a steady orange light (to notify that it needs descaling). Then, one day it started flashing, and after descaling (which has step/s missing in the instructions BTW - so you will never descale following these instructions alone) - continued to flash. They sent a replacement. It too reached the Flashing orange scenario. Unable to clear, they sent a third machine in Oct 18. now we have a flashing orange light...again!
What do I do now?
Hi John R, We would recommend checking the setting for the water hardness and adjusting it to 'soft'. This should switch the orange light off. The light should only flash orange during the descale program to prompt you to refill the water tank to rinse out the unit. After that step, the light should switch off and the descaling process is finished.

Smeg
We live in a (very) hard water area. This seems to be a strange answer considering that fact. Surely all that will do is delay when the light stack flashing - and potentially damage the machine because it hasn't been descaled as often as it should?
No further comment Mr SMEG?
Hi John,
Could you kindly email our national service manager steve.cullen@smeg.com.au with your details. Once he has this information, he will be in direct contact with you.

Hi, I'm thinking about getting the Smeg ECF01 as I would like to use ESE pods, as we want to avoid capsules that contain aluminium. Could someone please advise:
1 - Are there any aluminium components in this machine, eg in the filter inserts?
2 - Are the 7g ESE pods adequate for a regular size cup of coffee, or is it preferable to buy 10g or 14g pods to use with this machine? Thanks.
Hi Tina, The parts of the coffee machine which are in contact with coffee and water are stainless steel. There is a pod filter which can take 7, 10 or 14 gram pods. the 7 gram pod is sufficient for espresso, if you would like a longer coffee you may want to try the larger pods.
Hope this helps

Hi,
I have a machine that is a few days old. I make one double espresso shot and froth 100ml milk - and after turning the lever back having cleared out the water / steam, the one and two cup blinking lights flash continually - they do not turn off after a few seconds - and they keep flashing until the machine turns itself off after the default time has elapsed. So no further coffees can be made unless I manually switch the machine off and restart.
Is this a fault?
Thanks.
.
Hi Steve, When you finish frothing milk, place an empty jug under the spout and bring the lever forward, hot water will stop coming out as soon as the boiler has cooled down. Return the lever to the upright position and you can make further coffees.
For further information, please refer to your instruction manual, Chapter 3.7 How to cool down the boiler.

Hi,
Thank you - I tried it again - it was my user error. I didn’t leave the lever down for long enough. Perfect now.
Gotta say, this machine is great! Beautiful coffee.
Cheers,
Steve.
Apologies - I posted initially in the "Review" section but think that is okay as I love the machine! I purchased this machine (RED) about 6 weeks ago now (May 2018) from Peters of Kensingon (online) and it is a lovely looking little beastie and makes a very nice coffee! Unfortunately I am also having a problem with the ON/OFF switch being stuck in the "ON" position and initially thought it was something I would have to live with - after checking here on Product Review I see it appears to be a problem with some machines - aside from that it makes a nice coffee with an excellent crema - unfortunately have no way of getting it back there as I don't drive a car and health problems - any help appreciated. I really do love the machine and SMEG products, have also bought and used your microwaves only over the past 10 years never having a problem with them and wouldn't consider another brand (hope I don't jinx myself!). I look forward to hearing from someone ... thank you
I have the same problem, and was initially anxious about it, however the off switch tends to pop out when the water is empty. I now haven't given it a second thought. The coffee maker still works flawlessly - I am about to buy another for the holiday house- hope this helps
Thanks Alex! That really is helpful - it really is a great little machine for the price. I will let the water tank run down and see how that goes ... if that is the only quirk it has I think I can live with it :) v
I haven't had the problem of the on/off switch sticking so can only assume it's a issue on some machines.
I have just bought this machine and followed instructions for first use. No water comes out whatsoever. The water tank is fitted correctly, Anyone had similar problem?
It would appear that the unit may have a pump problem, I f you could forward the information below to retailsales@smeg.com.au and the will arrange a replacement. 1. Full Name 2. Address where to send the replacement unit
3. Contact Phone Number
4. Copy of your receipt where you purchased your appliance
5. A picture of the serial number (see underneath the appliance)
6. A picture of the appliance explaining the reason for return
Yes. Mine just did the same thing right out of the box. One of the springs in the base of the tanks was stuck. I tapped it until it sprung free and then gently exercised it working fine now.
Purchased through Harvey Norman Marion South Australia very happy with unit . One question ...After making one successful serve the two cup symbols flash constantly frustrating to the point I have to turn off to reset for another cup.. is this normal as there is no information in booklet for this issue ??
Hi Unclebob, does this occur when you have frothed some milk? If so, it means that the thermoblock is too hot to make a cup of coffee. To bring the temperature down, place a jug under the steam spout and pull the lever forward to release the excess steam. Once the excess steam stops coming out, turn the lever up and your ready to go again. The cup symbols not flash any longer. If you require any further assistance, please contact us on 02 8667 4855.
