Chromagen Midea 170L Heat Pump Questions & Answers
VerifiedMPN: S0972What does E8 code on screen mean?
Our idea heat pump has stopped working and flashing E8, what's the problem?
I have just had a Midea heat pump model # RSJ-23/300RDN7-L2 installed, it is set on a timer for 5 hours on hybrid model, set for 63° but will only get to 54° what's the issue?
How do I set the vacation mode on this unit?
Needing more roof space for a voltaric system, I will remove the existing glycol Rheem solar hot water unit off my roof and install a heat pump. Question, Solarhart make one Bluetooth were you can instruct it to turn on if your away thru the app, does the Chromegen heat pump have that capability? Cheers Les
My inquiry concerns the Midea HP 280 Litre water heater, installed in mid-2024. I have contacted customer support regarding settings and an issue with the control panel. Last contact was in June 2025, they no longer have service providers in our area, and I haven't heard from them since. Initially, our power bill was very high because it was not running on off-peak hours, and I had to adjust the settings manually. I was instructed to operate primarily in Hybrid mode at 50 degrees. We live in a cold climate, and barely have enough hot water for more than two showers per day. If I use the dishwasher, I have to run the Hot water unit in the E heater mode for at least an hour to get the temperature back up.
My 170; heat punp clock resets after a powe outage, is there a replaceable battery back up in it?
Why does the hot water system mildea 170l fill up at 1.30 in the morning
It should fill as the hot water is used. However it may not be heating if you are on an off peak tariff or if the timer in the unit is set to come on at 1:30. Speaking from personal experience, my replacement unit does not hold time and Chromagen have refused to replace the PCB. I believe that the timer settings are stored in volatile memory and can be lost or corrupted when off peak power is cycled. CHromagen should be able to answer these questions for you. I have found them unpleasant and arrogant to deal with.
Thankyou
There's a stream of leaking water behind the facia cover, coming from the bottom of the electrical element cover. My temp is set at 60, once i bathe the temp drops and the leak gets worse..the unit is only 2 yr 3 months old. I live entirely on a pension..no $ to fix right now. is it safe to use, what can be wrong with it? Thanks Lena
Hi Lena. You may get a few more months out of it if you close the water valve and turn it off when not using it. I believe it has formed a leak on one of the welds where the refrigerant coils are tacked to the tank. My first unit did the same thing at 4 years. I cut the outer casing and removed the insulating foam tracking backwards to the leak. The water was tracking along the path of the refrigerant pipe and coming out at the element cover just like yours. Except that mine destroyed the terminals on the heater and temp sensor. I had to bypass these while waiting for a replacement unit. The tank and tube are dissimilar metals and form an electrical couple where the cathode causes the anode (tank) to slowly dissolve. It is an elementary design error.
My midea 170 L, has just developed multiple issues after 6.7 years. Not worth fixing. You should have a 5 year warranty. So ring them up and exercise the warranty. To Lena.
Is it possible to set the temp.. above the max set temp of 65 deg C on Midea 170 Hot water heater?
No you can't unfortunately, because it only goes up to 65 degrees which is less than other water heaters it may be possible to have a plumber adjust the tempering value if it's limiting the temperature too much.
Thanks Peter I will look into it.
what app allows you to control the hrat pump from your phone?
When we turn the hot water tap on we now have brown water. ????
Hi Victoria, Many thanks for the question. We’ve never experienced that issue at all and I even asked our friend who also has a Chromagen Heat Pump & he also has never experienced that problem either so we’re both a bit surprised and somewhat mystified. However I’ve gone onto the Chromagen website and also googled the query in relationship to the Chromagen brand on the internet and what it’s saying in several places is that your problem of brown coloured water coming out when you turn the hot water tap on is highly caused by either rust in the pipes or a build up of sediment in the pipes.
Other than that, my recommendation or advice would be contact Chromagen, explain the problem, and they should be able to take it from there, or at least point you in the right direction. Hope this helps.
Kind regards, Robyn.
Hi again Victoria, Here’s one answer from the internet that also supports the potential likelihood of rust or sediment in the pipes. Why is the water brown when I turn on the hot water? Internet: Brown, yellow or red water: These colors indicate rust in your pipes. The problem may only be with your hot water heater (hopefully!) or it may be with the pipes throughout your home (ouch!). Thankfully, a common solution to rusty pipes is to install a water softener or filtration system in your home.
Mine has stuffed up after 6.5 years so they are terrible, cause need to buy again or pay more for instalation do not buy
Hi Darrell W, I feel both saddened & surprised to hear of your experience with the tank breaking down after 6.5 years. I can understand your frustration. It’s hard for me to know what to tell you. I can only repeat that personally for our family, transitioning away from gas into an electrified future, & the purchase of our Chromagen Midea Heat Pump was hands down the best decision we’ve ever made & my review reflected our own experience with this product. I guess with any purchase of any item, there’s always going to be variables and it’s only natural different people may have different experiences. These heat pumps are designed to last 10-15 years even though I realise the warranty on the Chromagen Heat Pump is 5 years on the tank & 3 yrs on the compressor. I totally understand the frustration with yours having an issue after this time period. I liken it a little bit to a new car .. eg if you bought a brand new car & it had a 5 year warranty, it doesn’t mean nothing can go wrong after that time period.
I hope you can find a satisfactory resolution.
What is the tank made from and what is the refrigerant, thank you
My 170 litre unit just stopped when turned it back on from the wall it made one beep no red light no sign of life anywhere, unit is outside what is likely cause
Just had my midea chromogen water heater unit 170l for 3 months. It suddenly trip the safety switch at main switch board. What is the reason
I have a Chromogen Midea 170lt hot water tank but the water is not hot enough. The tank says 61c but I can run my hand under that outlet valve and we can't use cold water when showering. Any suggestions?
I had that problem when I first got ours. I turned it to hybrid. Seemed to do the trick.
When you set the units timers to only work between certain times do you have to change mode? It's currently set in hybrid mode.
Hiii.... is it possible to have Electrical Heater 150 Litters? Thank you
Why can't I get any hot water from my new heat pump which was installed in the last 12 months. The pipe is hot but the water isn't getting past the valve?
