How do I eliminate the horrific wind noise that the set of three Rhino Rack Rails that I have fitted to my Land Rover Defender L663 100 23.5ym makes even at low speed?

Did you leave the rubber in or remove it ? Are you carrying anything that is making the noise or is this just on their own ?

Dennis M.
Dennis M.

The Rhino Rails on my Defender are RDB126 1260mm Reconn-Deck Bars. There are 4 channels per bar and they do not come with rubber inserts. Not carrying any thing on the rails.

I’ve had a pioneer platform and backbone system fitted to my ‘20 Ford Everest for the last 2.5 years and have used it extensively without issue but I’ve just bought a roof top tent for an upcoming trip which I’ve mounted with the rhino brand pioneer platform RTT mounts. The RTT weighs approx 70kg and I’ve discovered on rough roads the front pioneer platform flexes so much with the mounted weight that it hits the front of the backbone- (the front RTT mounts are attached to the very front sideways running channel of the platform) . I’m concerned that on corrugated roads the vibrations may eventually crack the front mounts on the backbone rails. Is there a solution to brace the system so that the front of the platform does not vibrate so much? The RTT mounts do not line up with the channels running front to back so I cannot move them further back.

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Luke, Thank you for your message. With the weight of the Roof Top Tents, the brackets are designed to be installed on the planks, and not on the outer edge. Is there any way to move the bracket further back to be placed over two planks? This will help elevate the weight bearing on the front of the platform. Thank you and Kind Regards, Jasmine.

I have fitted a set of Rhino sport bars I think they are called. The brackets come down under the door rubbers onto the frame of the roof I guess. My problem is when it rains water runs down the bracket into the groove of the door rubbers, and then down into the cabin under the flooring and has caused rust damage to the floor pans. I have repaired the rust but want to stop the water before fitting new underlay etc. any tips. My panel beater suggested running non setting permanently plastic silicon along the groove of the door rubbers.

Waste of time. They don’t know what day it is and don’t care. Devonport Autobarn. I left my number there with them weeks ago and they haven’t replied at all and I doubt I’ll have it here from my think that was just to placate me by saying I will take your number. I’ve had three sets of these roof racks over the last 20+ years. None of them have leaked before so I’m not sure why this crap does. I’m having this problem obviously other people are too. I guess it just means I won’t ever buy rhino roof racks again.

Hello I have just had the Rhino rack pioneer platform.installed on the dmax and was surprised at how much wind noise. What is the infill people.are referring to to make this quite than what it is really worried

Dave
Dave

The wind noise is only one of the problems with these racks. If you look closely they are really only held together with a couple of pop rivets. They can and do come apart on the free way. It would have cost the a couple of dollars extra to add enough rivets to stop this from happening but they chose not to.

Andrew5543
Andrew5543

Hi Paul, I have the Pioneer Tradie, I have no wind noise whatsoever, and its on a 76 series Cruiser, just missing parts from rhino which was rectified, super rack now. There is rubber infils that fill the cross channels, contact Rhino and they will send them to you.

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Paul97, Thank you for your question. We have some rubber strips you can put in the channels of the platform underside bars to help reduce the noise. We also have the wind fairings as well, which are on our website and have been a very successful release. If you would like me to supply you with the rubber strips, please send your address and proof of purchase through to our email address which is customerservice@rhinorack.com.au Thank you and kind regards, Marisa.

Don't know if anyone would see this. But regarding to what Dave was saying. All my rivets and the brackets were super loose which I drilled out and replaced to get it all tight. I then created another annoying noise. Because everything was so tight the plastic locks and mounts were making an awful loud noise. Not sure about a permanent fix but I lubed the locks, pins & mounts with grease and it seems to have gone. Hope this helps the next person.

Hey guys just had a 1928 x 1236 platform and back bone fitted to my new Isuzu Mux. The wind noise is off the charts. Once we hit 80km it starts to whistle and sounds like a plane is landing on our roof. Can’t hear the stereo let alone have a conversation. Have read mixed reviews about the wind deflector… surely there is another solution before I take the rack off completely?!

Andrew5543

Contact Rhino, there is a rubber infil for the cross members underneath, that’s where the noise comes from

Just bought a brand new Isuzu MU-X and purchased the appropriate Rhino Rack and back bone. All fitted and looks great. As I proudly drove up the highway, the wind noise was noticeable and somewhat expected so I turned up the radio as few notches. But when the whistle started at 95km/hr and then winds up even louder the faster you go ... I feel so let down. With a brand like Rhino, I would have thought that this would have been unthinkable. What do you recommend I do - at the moment I only have one option, to undo the 6 bolts and take it off.

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi John, Thank you for reaching out. I am so glad you have chosen Rhino Rack for your MU-X! The wind noise can change on every drive and no two trips would ever be the same. In order to proceed with the options we have for you, i would need to know if you have the 5 series platform or the 4 series Tradie / Tray on the vehicle in question. Please advise, and we can go from there. Thank you and kind regards, Marisa.

Thanks for your reply Marisa. The whistle is pretty much consistent no matter head wind, crosswind or tail wind (it can get louder but never any quieter!) This is a series 5 platform.

Hi, Yesterday i purchased the Rhino Pioneer platform (I've been told series 5) with Backbone fitting system for my 2019 VW Amarok Dual Cab Ute its the larger of the 2 available platforms for my vehicle 1528 x 1376 in size. Driving home from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast even at speeds of 50 and 60 klm i noticed a considerable wind noise and once on the highway the noise is seriously unbearable. After spending so much money I'm really disappointed. After chatting (online chat) with Roof Racks Galore they advised me of a wind fairing but that its not available for the series 5. They were as helpful as i guess they could be but basically have said there is nothing else they can do.

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Mark. Thank you for contacting us. We do have a wind fairing coming out for the 5 series platform in the next couple of months. In the meantime i am happy to supply you with some rubber to go into the underside bars to help reduce the wind noise. These will be free of charge to you i just need your address and proof of purchase sent to customerservice@rhinorack.com.au. You can read more information on wind noise in the blog here external link .

Thank you and kind regards, Marisa.

Mark

Hi Marisa, Thank you for your reply, I have read the information at the link you provided, It appears to me that the roof rack can only be installed in one position anyway so i'm sure its been installed correctly. It's not making a whistling noise though, just an extremely loud wind noise resembling a plane about to land on my roof. It would be good if you could send me the rubber strips to try for now. (And any future updates on the fairings availability would be great please) I will send the requested proof of purchase and my address through now to the email provide. I appreciate your help Marisa,

Thank You, Mark

Rhino-Rack

Hi Mark, Thank you - i will have a look for your email now and organise for the strips to be sent. I have heard this explanation of the wind noise for the new 5 series platform previously. After providing customers with the rubber the wind noise is greatly reduced. Thank you again for your reply, i am here to help. Kind regards, Marisa.

Hey how’s it going I just got a a set of 2500 heavy duty roof racks with the door mounts a few weeks ago and just put on my sunseeker awning on today and the right hand drivers side door mount seems to have some play in it where as before I put the awning on it didn’t I have done the bolt up as tight as I could but still seems to have some play in it should I be worried about the play in it or is it usual for the door mounted racks to have some play

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Cozza. It should have any play in it but there are a few that would need to be checked. The load rating of the vehicle and weight of the awning, the location of the clamps in the door and whether you have travelled on any corrugated roads as the door mount systems are not rating off road. If these things are all correct i would suggest taking it into a dealer to have it looked at. Is it possible you can tell me what vehicle you have? Kind Regards, Marisa.

Hi

I’ve had a rhino tradie rack installed on my ranger with RLT600 legs and after installing an awning on the passenger side had started to notice some creaking in the mounts when turning corners and going over bumps, is this something I should be worried about or normal once weight is added to the rack?

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Joel, Thank you for your feedback. There definitely shouldn't be creaking noises. Which awning do you have? Just in case you have an awning that is part of the recall i suggest removing it for the time being while we look into it for you. If you would prefer to contact customer service directly - you can email customerservice@rhinorack.com.au

Kings awning not a rhino one, the sound is coming from all mounts not just the side with awning attached, could possibly be the bolts need tightening on them

Rhino-Rack

I think I may have found the issue can I just need to double check, I need the 42100B PX ranger dual cab 2014 ‘dimension A’ measurement for RLT600 leg mount positions on the pioneer rack to cross reference, it is not on the vehicle specific fitment sheet on the rhino rack website?

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Joel, The 42100B follows the same measurements as the 45100B and 41100 - I have attached the link for you. external link  Thank you and kind regards, Marisa.

I have an 2500 vortex Rhino rack 2 bar on my Ford F150. My roof tent weigh about 54 kg and the 2 bar rack can carry 69 kg. Rhino rack say the will recommend using the 2500 series with a roof tent , why will it not work with my roof tent? Or will it if the dynamic load capacity is not crossed.?

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Paul, Thank you for your question. Rhino Rack does not recommend the use of rooftop tents of any brand with the 2500 door mount system. The reason for this is because the door mount system is removable and there is no way to permanently fix to the roof of the vehicle. Kind Regards. Marisa.

Paul D.
Paul D.

Thank you for the replay, but does this mean it will not work or unsafe? Whether I put 2 kayaks, or any cargo on the roof is same as putting my roof tent? If Rhino Rack are feeling unsafe for this reason and load can become undone? If the load does not exceed the capacity of the rack It should be safe no? Please give me some clarity? Thank you

Rhino-Rack
Rhino-Rack   DM

Hi Paul, Two kayaks and cargo on the 2500 series door mount system is completely safe if within the load rating of the vehicle. This system is tested and approved to AS1235-2000/ ISO 11154, We recommend you exercise extreme care when transporting wind-resistant loads, and driving off sealed roads - the load rating must be divided by two. We also recommend testing the racks and tie downs at every 2 to 3 hours.

Hi, I have just had a rhino pioneer platform with a backbone fitted to a Toyota FJ Cruiser. At 80km-100km it whistles very loudly, it appears to be coming from the left side. Any ideas what may be causing this and how to stop it?

Maestrolb
Maestrolb

Hello, I have tried numerous fixes including a wind fairing. Don’t Easter your money in the fairing, it does nothing to improve the noise and actually introduces new noises. The sound appears to be generated by the front lip which creates a rolling wind distortion. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any fix.
