What’s the 4.6 v8 like is it very reliable
Hi guys, looking at purchasing a 2002 4l V8 series 2 discovery. It's been very well looked after with a few added accessories which is perfect for camping and 4x4ing but the whole head gasket issue on these engines is really bothering me. How concerned should I be, it's got 180000kms auto.

From David M, Perth: V8, auto transmission. Why is it, that from time time, upon turning the ignition key, the engine sounds as rough as guts and firing on less than all cylinders. And, as I reverse out of the garage, the brakes are super soft. But within just a few moments the engine runs smoothly and as it should. If I then take it to an auto repairer, nothing can be found. I’ve had the HT leads replaced (twice) but this situation still occurs from time to time. Otherwise I still love my Disco. Only done 150k.

There could be many reasons Craig. I suspect the water is impacting an electrical connection somewhere and causing this. If it is petrol, check your ignition system is up to spec as a small amount of water in the right place could prevent a strong spark and cause misfire on at least some cylinders.

I had a TD5 HSE for a few years and always changed my fuel filter at about 20,000 km. If your fuel is 100% clean from reputable City pumps, you could extend it to 30,000, but if you are traveling in the bush or using fuel from Jerry cans, definitely every 20,000 km.
I know they aren't cheap here, but you can buy genuine parts on the internet from various Land Rover suppliers in the UK.

When land owners are done with their Discovery 2’s, they throw a rock on the gas pedal and watch it launch off a 300m rock face for some entertainment. How and which direction it faces after this feat is anyone’s guess.

in my service book the vehicle model is called discoveryS v8 country first reg 29 may 2005. is this a model 2 or 3 can you tell me if this model has a timing chain or a belt? thanks
2005 was the year the Discovery2 ended and Discovery 3 commenced. "DiscoveryS Country" sounds like a Discovery 2, in which case the V8 used in the D2 model used a timing chain, not a belt, according to the text and illustrations in my Land Rover factory-produced workshop manual.

Is there a problem with td5's with plastic lugs in head between 150000 and 180000kms?
The TD5 is well known for a problem with the heads with plastic lugs. At 150k many have been replaced with steel. They are a beaut motor & once repaired they seem to run for a long time thereafter. I suggest you speak with an after market Landrover Specialist, there are plenty in most states & get an assessment of the vehicle you own or are contemplating to purchase.
Have been told there is 2 oil filters to replace on td5 2002 model.

Yes there are 2 oil filters a canister type underneath the turbo charger and a rotor filter next to the turbo charger.
I have a diesel discovery 1999 which runs well but seems to have a serious lack of power ( torque) , slow to accelerate and sluggish up hills . Is this normal for this land rover?

Hello Gavin. Mine is slow to accelerate etc until she's warmed up a bit, then all is good. I was pleasantly surprised at my Discos speed, especially at highway speeds, compared to other 2 - 3 litre turbos I've had. Keeping in mind that you've a little 2.5 turbo diesel that's maybe 16 years old pushing two tonnes of metal, this wagon will never be a traffic light warrior. However, once warmed up, mine is no embarrassment; although she does like to keep momentum. Much like the turbo trucks I drive for work.
If your Disco is just a slug all day, try some basic maintenance like fresh oil and new fuel filter etc. If she's still slow, the injectors may need a rebuild. Try getting a professional opinion from an honest expert, and avoid the "authorised dealers" like the plague; they will just take your money.
Hi Gavin, The type of wheel/tyre combination your car is running could be the cause of your disco feeling like it lacks torque. The TD5 diesel is a pretty capable engine but will struggle trying to push oversize diameter tyres - especially if you're carrying a heap of cargo or towing. Even an increase of 1 inch in tyre diameter will make a noticeable difference. I suggest checking your wheels/tyres against the original spec. Hope this helps.
Hi all, I had my disco 2 2004 diesel manual in for a rear engine seal replacement along with replacing the thrust bearing, clutch,and rear coupling. I had spent some $$ on her for leaks and things looked good, however when I got under to have a look after mechanic had done the above work I noticed a large drip of greenish clear looking fluid at the bottom of the transfer case, which I was told was gear box oil?? and leaking in the seam between the gearbox and transfer box. Can anyone give me some guidance on what will need to be the process for changing the rear engine seal as he had not done it the first time (although he charged me for it) what needs to be sealed? any gaskets required? and the process. I cant afford to pay to have someone else do the work so will be there to oversee this time and to have some idea of process's and sealants needed etc would be very helpful.

I would dare say it is a coolant leak from the water pump. Give a clean around the area, check coolant levels and then keep an eye on it to see if the green liquid returns (matched by dropping coolant levels).
The water pump should be replaced every time you do the timing belt (do the thermostat at the same time).
If it doesn't come back, it might of just been excess coolant from when the mechanic serviced the car.
We are considdering getting one of these but am worried about how much it drinks.Does anyone know what the fuel consumption for a 2004 Discovery with a 4.0 litre engine? How many k's would you get for one tank?
Hi Ella79 If you are buying the car for short trips generally that's ok but if you do a few km you will be disappointed. We have the TDI (diesel) model which is quite fuel efficient but all petrol 4 week drives are very thirsty. Most petro 4 wheel drives use about 15+ Ltrs per 100 km. Diesels are more expensive though. I am looking at diesel discovery 2003 , very new to land rover wanted to get idea of how many klms the engines can comfortably do and what to look out for and what to pay? Would only do light beach 4wd and light towing( 5m boat) Any feedback good or bad would be appreciated.
Hi Chad I can't really answer all of your questions but from our experience the LR Discovery 2003/4 TDI has been excellent. People talk of oil leaks etc but I think that those issues we fixed in early than 2003 models. We havn't had any. A friend of mine had a serious transmission problem with a 2000 model but reportedly it had not been serviced for a very long time. I am led to believe that the engines can do 500,000 easily if serviced reasonably. Ours has been very reliable so far. I think that it's worth getting an RACV or similar test done to be sure about the condition.
Ours is still running like new. Seriously - it still drives like a new car.

The TD5 is the Discovery I'd recommend. Great strong engine very tunable if you need to and great fuel consumption. To be honest you'll barely notice your towing a five metre boat with the Disco. A good TD5 can go forever (1,000,000k) but I'd go for one with a good service history. If you get a bad one parts can be pricey. I buy mine from the UK when I need to.
Be very careful buying any 4x4 from places like the Sunshine Coast. The beach is bad for anything even Land Rovers so get right under it and have a good look.
Again service history and full log books are priority!!!

Bought mine (TD5 Auto) in 2001. Still got it with 190,000k's on the clock. I've owned many cars in my life - THIS ONE IS THE BEST - and I never want to sell it !
