Disappointing product quality and unacceptable warranty service I am extremely disappointed with both the quality of my Maxi-Cosi car seat and the… Read more

company's handling of my warranty claim.

I noticed damage to the car seat and the seatbelt, particularly where the belt comes into contact with the seat's clip. Maxi-Cosi suggested that rodents might have caused the damage, despite there being no evidence of rodents in my car. I thoroughly inspected the vehicle several times and found nothing to support this explanation.

What disappointed me most was Maxi-Cosi's response. They refused to accept my warranty claim and simply told me to dispose of the car seat. They offered no satisfactory explanation or resolution.

This is a product designed to protect children, and I expected the manufacturer to take my safety concerns seriously. Instead, I was left with a car seat I could no longer use and no support from the company.

I purchased Maxi-Cosi because I expected a reliable and safe product backed by a reputable manufacturer. Unfortunately, my experience with their warranty service has seriously damaged my trust in the brand.

I would not recommend Maxi-Cosi based on my experience, particularly given how my warranty complaint was handled.

Reasonable seat but inserts not durable – We bought one of these for each car because they are meant to be the best seats you can buy (safest and easiest to use). One seat is 7 months old and… Read more

the other is 2 months old.

The seat is easy to install by following the instructions on it. We bought the isofix version.

The seat is comfortable enough and our baby has travelled long distances and slept for a lot of it. It doesn’t breathe enough for our baby because they always eventually get a sweaty back and head in it even with the air conditioning on, tinted windows and window shade. The MaxiCosi capsule was a lot worse for overheating so got our baby out of it within 3 months.

The 7 month old seat has had its lining washed once before.

The photo shows what happened to the 7 month old insert after a delicate machine wash in our Bosch HomeProfessional using Softly. I only listed the machine and detergent to show that it’s meant to be one of the better machines you can buy and the detergent is not harsh. That was it’s second wash. I think that’s poor performance for what is meant to be a premium product that is meant to have machine washable inserts.

I was hoping to get 3-4 years out of the seat. Our baby is well behaved and not messy. The inserts probably won’t last with the way it is going and that doesn’t make it good value-for-money.

month old baby was asleep in the seat. I looked in the mirror and noticed she was falling out of the seat over into the middle backseat. I could see the back of her head bent over her body and freaked out. I had to pull over to on the motorway to check on her and noticed the buckle was undone on one side. I fastened it again and then continued driving. I stopped 15 minutes later to check on her because I was so stressed and the buckle was undone again! It was working fine when I did it up both times. We checked it is locking in and fastening correctly yet it was spontaneously opening. I called the manufacturer for advice and they said sand, food, dirt, fluff can get in the buckle and stop it from working and to clean it out with water. I told them there is no way any of this is in the buckle the baby is 6 months old and does not go to the beach or play in dirt, or eat food in the seat. They said in hindsight yes it is not likely and said it must be faulty and to send it back so they can review it. I told them I am sending both seats back, I don’t want them and do not trust that they are safe. The britax customer service rep said in all her years of working there she can count on her hand how many times this has happened, and to keep the second seat because its statistically not likely to be faulty as well. I asked my mum friends if this has happened to any of them and they confirmed it happened to their capsule too which is the same brand. The britax rep in store was rude and unhelpful, didn’t apologise on behalf of the company and suggested I mustn’t have fastened the seatbelt right despite using it for 6 months with no issue, even though Britax customer service admitted they have seen this before and Baby Bunting had said they had seen it once too. Baby bunting refunded both seats, britax would not. Britax were absolutely shocking. We now use maxi cosi.

much easer for us to use. Being brand new parents we are delighted with this as it is so easy to put our little one in there and take him out.

Every aspect of the InfaSecure Pilot seat oozes class and the quality of materials used is second to none compared to a lot of the seats we saw when originally shopping for one. Trust us, as first time parents and going by the advice of our parents, you can't skimp on safety and having our little one comfortable is so important to all of us.

What delighted me was how easy it was for me to be able to put my newborn into the seat. I just had to move the straps out of the way, put his arms and legs through and then buckle him in. The whole time he was very comfortable and didn’t fuss or cry in the seat at all. I also liked how I am able to adjust the seat so it’s suitable for his age and height. Getting him out of the seat was very easy, the buckle only had to be lightly pressed for it to come undone and then I was able to move the straps to take him out.

What could be improved?

What I think could be improved is the way to install it. While installing it, we struggled to get the seat to be tight so that it wasn’t moving around while he was in the seat. In saying that, this is our first baby so we are very new to this and once installed we couldn't be any happier with it.

When shopping for a baby car seat, there are several things to keep in mind, particularly the official Australian road safety requirements. On top of this, there are an array of baby seats differing in weight, size, design, restraint and anchorage type. Keep reading to find out which is most suitable for your specific needs.

Mother putting baby in car seat restraint

Child car seat laws in Australia

Child age and size

Child car seat laws keep your children safe on the roads and follow a system based on size and approximate age. As children grow at vastly different rates, it's always safest to use the car seat that is most suitable for your child's size, rather than just relying on their age.

  • 0 - 6 months: Must use a rear-facing child car seat
  • 6 months - 4 years: Must use a rear or forward-facing child car seat with inbuilt harness
  • 4 years - 7 years (or 144cm): Must use a forward-facing child car seat with inbuilt harness or booster seat
  • 145cm or taller: Must use an adult seat belt

To protect your children the most effectively, move them up a size category if you notice they are growing too big for their current baby car seat or if their shoulders reach past the markings on the seat.

Front and back seat laws

While your toddlers might put up a fight to sit in the front seat to enjoy the view, refrain from doing so. Because front seats contain airbags that protect adults but can endanger a small child, laws dictate the placement of the baby car seat depending on the child's age and the number of rows in the vehicle.

For vehicles with multiple rows:

  • 0 - 4 years: Cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows
  • 4 years - 7 years: Cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows, unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than 7 years of age in an approved child restraint or booster seat

When there is only one row of seats available (in the case of sports cars or a single cab ute):

  • A child younger than 7 can sit in the front seat of a one-row vehicle in the case that they are properly restrained, using an anchorage point if required
  • A child in a rearward-facing car seat should not be placed in the front seat of a vehicle where there is an airbag

If your vehicle doesn't have two rows of seats, it's vital you disable the airbags before securing your child in the front seat in the appropriate restraint. The safest place for children aged 12 years and younger is always to sit in the rear. While both rear side positions are very safe, the most secure position is in the rear middle, away from potential crash entry points.

Standard label

Make sure your baby car seat is tested and suitable for use in Australia - all child car seats sold, bought and used in Australia must meet the Australian and New Zealand standards AS/NZS 1754 which quality-assures materials, design, performance, labelling, construction and testing.

You can find the standards label printed on your car seat or packaging. Similarly, all additional accessories such as covers, inserts, paddings and seat belt modifiers will contain the AS/NZS 8005:2013 label.

While it might be tempting to accept hand-me-downs from friends with older children or buy second-hand, these seats may no longer comply with current safety regulations or work as effectively as a new baby car seat. If you'd like to know more about what to look for when buying second-hand, keep reading until the end.

Types of child restraints

Rear-facing and front-facing

Mother putting baby in rearward facing baby car seat

  • Rear-facing seats offer the best protection as they keep the child's head, neck and spine aligned during impact. The seat absorbs the force of the crash rather than the body. This is why rear-facing seats are essential for newborns and babies between 0-6 months.

  • A forward-facing seat slows down the body in the event of a crash but does not support the head, neck and spine. It is more comfortable for larger children who have outgrown rear-facing seats.

Types of car seats

When choosing which seat type works best for you, there are a few things to consider.

Baby capsules

Baby capsules refer to baby car seats that are one-size, as opposed to convertible seats which can be height adjusted and 'grow' with your child for several years. Capsules can only be used in a rear-facing position and are designed specifically for newborns up to 6 months old or 9kg. After this, a new car seat must be bought. Capsules can be hired for a cost-effective solution.

Baby capsule seats are the most lightweight and convenient option. They are made with newborns and young babies in mind, are great for transferring your baby in and out of the car and for use in a suitable pram or stroller.

Convertible car seats

Convertible child car seats can be used as either rear-facing or forward-facing and provide an inbuilt harness. They can come with adjustable height features which mean that your child can use this seat from 0-7 years or until they are big enough to use a booster seat.

Convertible seats provide durable long-term use and are safer for younger children since they allow your baby to be positioned rear-facing for longer.

Combination car seats

Combination child car seats are forward-facing only with an inbuilt tether. The seat can then be converted into a belt-positioning booster seat as needed. They can be used when your child is 6 months-12 years. However, it is recommended that children use a rear-facing seat for as long as possible for maximum protection.

Combination car seats have the longest potential lifespan, however, it is recommended to use rear-facing seats for as long as possible before transitioning to forward-facing.

Booster seats

Booster seats should be used after your child outgrows forward-facing seats but remains under 145cm tall, a height typically reached at 11-12 years of age.

ISOFIX and seat belt anchor system

ISOFIX anchor points in car

ISOFIX is a term you'll see often when browsing for a baby car seat and it simply refers to an installation method that involves clipping the car seat into anchorage points already pre-built into the car. Many new cars are compatible with this method which is easy, safe and straightforward.

The traditional seat belt anchor system is just as safe when installed correctly - this involves looping an adult seat belt around the baby car seat in strategic, marked-out points and additional top tethers.

It is recommended where possible that you have your baby car seat professionally fitted at an authorised fitting station for optimum safety.

ISOFIX car restraints are very popular in Europe, so if buying online, ensure that yours isn't from overseas and complies with Australian safety standards.

Factors to consider before buying

Compatibility with your car

Above all else, it's important to make sure that your baby car seat is compatible with your car. This involves checking:

  • Size: Many stores will allow you to test the fit of the product in your car before purchasing. Check that the baby car seat rests comfortably and squarely on the base of the adult seat. If you aim to use the same car seat in multiple cars, check that it fits in each one.
  • Restraint type: Make sure you are using the appropriate restraint for your child's size at all times.
  • Accessories: There are many add-ons that you can buy to embellish your car seat such as guards, cushion pads and strap covers, but make sure that they do not affect the tightness of the harness or restraint. As a general rule, there should be no slack in the harness and you should not be able to pinch the webbing on the harness strap near your child's shoulders.
  • Anchorage points/seat belt: The child car seat must be properly fitted for maximum efficiency, and this can be done in a variety of methods as outlined previously. Seat belt extensions can also be bought if the current seat belt length is not sufficient.

Additional factors:

  • Build quality: It's important to consider how durable your new investment will be - Britax Safe-n-Sound car seat is the 4-year-reigning Award winner, ranking 4.9 out of 5 in this category among reviewers.
  • Ease of use: For parents and carers who need to switch between different cars or for use in taxis, it's important to take into consideration the weight of the product. Many capsules can be detached from the base and carried for an easy transition between your home and the car.
  • Safety: New baby seat products with the 1754 label have been deemed safe to use by Australian regulations.
  • Value for money: Depending on your necessities, the price can range from $49.99 to $899.00. Those in the higher range promise durability, comfort, sleek design, convenience and flexibility. If you don't want to dish out for those luxuries, the car seats in the lower range are equally as safe when fitted correctly - just without the frills.
  • Cleaning & Maintenance: Children naturally attract mess so it's wise to consider if the inserts and covers can be removed, washed or replaced easily.
  • Ease of Installation: Take time to read the instructions manual to familiarise yourself with the product's functions and how easy it is to use.
  • Ease of height adjustment: Many brands, such as Maxi-Cosi offer car seats and capsules with adjustable heights for precise comfort and safety.
  • Colour and design: Whatever your child's newest obsession is, Spiderman or butterflies, you can find the matching design, or more modern options, in the array of design choices available.

Should I buy second-hand?

It's not recommended to buy a second-hand child car seat or capsule unless you know the entire history of the seat, and even in the case that you do, it's always the safer option to purchase a new seat that has recently undergone the necessary safety checks. Sometimes, the temptingly low second-hand prices are because a baby car seat is coming to the end of its expiration date which is normally between 6-10 years after it was made.

Should you wish to purchase one second-hand, make sure that the product

  • Is less than 6-10 years old - you can find the date of manufacture printed on the seat
  • Has the AS/NZS 1754 sticker or print
  • Has an accompanying instruction manual
