to any other brand. The value for money is incredible, but the quality is what keeps me coming back. Most brands are way too sweet and leave me feeling bloated, but UProtein is easy on the stomach and tastes natural.

The Coffee flavor is a total game-changer for me—I use it to replace my morning and evening coffees. It tastes amazing and helps me hit my protein goals effortlessly. If you want a protein that actually tastes good and won’t break the bank, this is it.

Loved the feeling of using the product. But the mixability is really poor. I even blended it in a smoothie and still felt really grainy and the last thing I taste is the creatine. Really sad :( Show details

artificial taste, the texture is great it mixes well with water or milk and also great for adding into meals. I can add it to my overnight oats or wheetbix to help reach my protein goals without realising it’s in the food. it satisfactory in every way. I espcially like the absence of carbs. By accident, I bought a jar of chocolate. The taste is a little sweet, but otherwise good. The problem is, it does not matter whether you shake it 100 or more times, or stir it for a long time, the stuff doesn't dissolve. Instead, it clumps to the spoon or the shaker cap or the sides of the shaker. Consequently, you don't get the full 25 grams of protein unless you maybe round off the scoop, which means fewer servings per bottle. If you want Dymatize ISO 100, buy the vanilla, NOT the chocolate unless you also want a lot of waste.

Raw protein, but labelling can cause confusion – Straight great quality whey protein. Clean taste of WPC, and pleasant. If effectiveness holds over the current 3 kg purchase, I will be buying more.… Read more

Would give it 4 stars but for the confusing labelling.

22 July, well it seems, there is an ingredients list and then another comment saying Raw has no additives. Saying two opposites statements is confusing. Ingredients list should list what is inside the package. It should not be listing ingredients of other packages, in my opinion. Anyway I have updated my rating.

13 Dec 24 After further research, and while the raw protein is excellent, I have decided to limit taking supplements once only at breakfast. Qualified medical advice is get your proteins thru food. Supplements dont have other nutrients. (See link to Harvard article below.) I mainly get it via chicken, tuna (Aldis) and Sardines Also it is a PITA getting protein out of the 1 kg bag. The bag does not open fully, and you get powder all over your hands and often powder will spill because of the un functional bag. This is caused by the “crimped sides” . Terrible.

One more, they send a scoop in every pak. This is not environmentally friendly, as scoops end up in garbage. Scoops should be sold separately. Maybe a free one with first order.

A man opening his protein shake bottle to drink his protein shake.

Is using protein powder good for you?

Protein powder can be a quick and easy way to increase your protein intake. If you already consume enough protein in your diet, then it may not be necessary. However, if you have increased protein needs or find it difficult to meet your protein needs through food sources, then protein powder may be a good option.

Some instances where protein powder may be beneficial for you include:

  • You exercise intensely
  • You’re trying to build muscle mass
  • You’re trying to maintain muscle mass while reducing fat mass
  • You’re trying to lose weight

Keep in mind that whether protein powder is good for you will also depend on the protein powder itself. If it’s a good quality, tested product that has minimal sugar and harmful additives, then you’re likely on the right track.

Protein sources in protein powders

Protein powders will contain either animal-based or plant-based protein sources. Animal-based proteins include whey, casein, collagen and egg. Plant-based protein often includes pea, soy, rice or hemp protein.

Whey • See all

Whey is a milk-based protein. It’s digested quicker than casein - your body can break it down and absorb it in just 20 minutes. It may be more beneficial if your exercise routine involves daily or regular strength training, as it can quicken post-workout recovery.

Concentrate vs. isolate vs hydrolysate

Whey protein is available in concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate form. However, some supplements contain a combination of all of these.

  • Whey isolate has been filtered to remove almost all fat and lactose, making it a great option for those looking to increase protein intake without taking on the extra calories or fat. It helps in muscle growth and repair, and is one of the leanest proteins you can buy.
  • Whey concentrate isn’t as filtered as whey isolate, but it contains a higher percentage of carbohydrates and fat, which is useful for muscle recovery. It usually contains 70 to 85% protein, and is generally cost-effective and easy to digest.
  • Whey hydrolysate has a low fat content, making it great for those on a low-fat diet. It also undergoes the process of hydrolysis, where water is added to break down the protein so that it’s easier for the body to digest. Hydrolysed whey is, however, usually more expensive.

Casein • See all

Casein is a milk-based protein that’s digested more slowly; after you consume it, your body’s absorption of amino acids and synthesis of proteins will peak after around 3 to 4 hours. Because it’s a slow-release protein, it can be useful for feeling fuller for longer, which is why a lot of people take it at night. It’s also often preferred by those who do less strenuous workouts or tend to have meals that are far apart.

Egg • See all

Although less common, egg white protein is considered a great alternative to whey and casein if you want to avoid dairy.

Plant-based • See all

If you're vegan, eat a plant-based diet or have a dairy allergy, you can find many plant-based protein sources, such as pea, hemp, soy or brown rice. You can also find powders containing wholegrains, nuts and seeds in their blend.

Collagen

Collagen is sourced from animals, as it's found in the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and skin of humans and animals. It isn’t a complete protein and is less capable of muscle growth and repair like other sources of protein, such as whey and pea. However, it is easily absorbed and can help the body build muscle after strength training.

What to consider when choosing a protein powder

Ingredient and nutrient quality

Different protein powders can have very different ingredient lists. Read the label carefully, taking note of ingredients you may want to consider avoiding, such as artificial sweeteners and colours.

If you want extra peace of mind about the quality of what you’re buying, you can also opt for a protein powder that has been tested by a third party for safety, quality and effectiveness.

‘Athlete safe’ protein

If you’re a professional or competitive athlete and you’re subject to substance screening, then you should take extra care when taking supplements like protein powder. If a brand has a protein that has been screened for prohibited substances, then they will usually advertise this. Independent companies such as HASTA or Informed Sport screen supplements for prohibited substances, but this isn’t a guarantee that you won’t test positive if tested, so do your research before buying.

Flavour and texture

Proteins often come in different flavours. You can easily find classic flavours like vanilla, chocolate, or coffee, but more out there flavours like salted caramel or cookies & cream are also widely available. If you’re making a protein smoothie that includes other ingredients, you may even want to opt for a flavourless protein powder.

Some protein powders will also mix more easily than others and the texture between them may vary. Online reviews can help you see what others have thought of the flavour and texture. Otherwise, see if a brand sells or offers single-serve packets so that you can try the protein before you commit to buying a big bag or tin of it.

Price

A 1kg bag or container of protein powder can usually cost anywhere from $38 to over $80 for more premium blends. How much you pay for a powder will depend on the protein source, the types of ingredients and ingredient quality, and the reputation of the brand itself.

The bottom line

It’s important to include protein-rich foods in your diet, as protein shakes shouldn’t be a stand-in for a balanced diet. However, if you have additional protein needs - such as those who do regular exercise - then protein powder can be an easy and effective way to meet your nutritional requirements.

Make sure you pay attention to your body and how you react to different protein powders; sometimes, shopping around or alternating between different products can help you find a way to consume protein that works for you.
