rangehoods to effectively expel everything out of the kitchen and not pervade living spaces at meal times. The two previous ones have been noisy and ineffective so we researched extensively and finally settled on this external motor Sirius model. The unit itself is classically stylish, the buttons simple, discreet and understated. And the pulling power of the motor is great. Installed 18 months ago at time of this review, it hasn’t missed a beat. It might be three times the price of a regular unit but it’s much greater sucking power and oh so much quieter operation, with the external motor in the roof, make the investment thoroughly worthwhile. Easy to install with the kits available. We didn’t need a tradesperson, but to mount and vent it properly some decent handyperson skills are required. An all round excellent product.

extraction pieces are too wide to fit in. Its dangerous to wash by hand - the bits of metal are literally razor sharp and you will cut your fingers washing the pieces in the sink. And the oil gets trapped in parts of the equipment that you CANNOT get to and clean. Even with a high pressure hose.

And here's the thing - the company knows it and does nothing about it. Its such a pity because its an Australian company and you really want to support Australian manufacturing companies.

Actually, suction aside, I am not sure its a particularly effective exhaust fan even when it is properly ducted.

actually bother using it - unlike our previous traditional rangehood that we tended not to turn on as it was so loud.

The rangehood was reasonable simple to install. Despite having a roof mounted extraction fan the unit plugged into the same powerpoint in the roof as our previous unit. It did take a bit of work mounting the fan on the roof and re flashing the tiles but this would be simple enough for a handy man to do.

Schweigen service has been great too. I called them to ask where I could buy LED light bulbs for the unit - their reply 'we have them, would you like us to send some out free of charge?' - Wow, we were super impressed!

Highly recommended.

not extract air. We believed that our old rangehood was ducted outside as it had an air vent on the outside brick wall and we believed our old range hood was ducted outside with a ducting hose but it was just being ducted into the wall cavity . according to our installer many of the houses have this very same problem.

We had our new Bosch rangehood ducted outside , we bought a ducting kit from Bunnings and had it installed to vent outside,. By doing this , we believe that we have greatly increased the removal of cooking smells.

The Bosch rangehood juts out from under our cupboards over the cook top but we don’t bump our heads on it. It has definitely made a difference to the air in the kitchen because it is extracting the cooking smells from the front of our cook top as well as the back of our cooktop, unlike the old pull out rangehood we had.

The controls are conveniently on the front of the rangehood.

it has two boost levels, which automatically run for a period of time and then drop down automatically from the boost level (according to their website the boost level drops down to the previous level after 6 minutes.)

I love the lighting , it has 3 x 1.5 Watt LED Lights, which can be dimmed

It has a Saturation display for filters on the front of the canopy which lights up when the filters need cleaning. Not sure whether this function works all that well. The app it connects to via wifi also tells us the saturation level, I would say that it would be very hard for the rangehood to monitor saturation levels and we are not bothered that this doesn't work as well as we expected it to.

3 Dishwasher safe metal grease filters, fits in easily into our dishwasher. To me, this is important as it was very hard to clean the filter on our old rangehood.

It looks really good with our dark timber cupboards and black granite splash back.

It has wifi capability, It can be app driven although I don’t use the app. You can turn it off and on, You can turn the lights on and off and it lets you know when the filters need cleaning. I don't really bother trying to control our rangehood via the app.

For our installer, it was an easy switch over from our old 90cm Technika pull out rangehood, it fitted in really well, I just lost the use of the inside of an overhead cupboard as the flue of the canopy rangehood now occupies it .

I almost discounted this model as it had wifi and an app, I knew I wouldn’t be using any of these functions and didn’t want to pay for functions I would never use, but I love the powerful extraction on this and it has made a significant difference in the kitchen.

PRO (from their website)

Dishwasher safe metal grease filters Saturation display for filters Extraction rate max. Normal use 602 m³/h. Intensive 965 m³/h Stainless steel filter covers, dishwasher safe with one-way flap: prevents outside air from entering your kitchen Power boost - 6min Automatic run on - 10 min 3 x 1.5 Watt LED Lights SoftLight with Dimming function It has wifi functionality 3 power levels + 2 intensive levels

It is not too noisy, moves a lot of air and is easy to service. Like most modern range hoods it has a drum type centrifugal fan, which will in the future be tricky to clean but in the mean time works better than the old standard fan blades. It has the feature that in the event of a fire, it shuts down, protecting itself, and your roof cavity from fire. Also, if there is an obstruction in the ducting, or it has to go a long way, the motor works harder to shift the air. I like the look and we can put small items like oven mits on top of it. The corners are quite sharp however, so it is important to sit it up and a height where you are not going to bonk your head when looking into a pot!

together. While the extractor hood worked well enough during its time, I found it to be quite noisy. However, the most disappointing aspect is that it stopped functioning right after hitting the 5-year mark.

Given Bosch's reputation for producing well-built German products, I expected a much longer lifespan for their appliances. It’s disheartening to see this trend with multiple products failing around the same time.

Additionally, I’ve found the parts and repair service to be quite expensive. For anyone considering purchasing Bosch appliances, I would urge you to think carefully about whether paying a premium price is worth it, especially if you're only getting 4-5 years of functionality.

stand on your head, to actually look under the hood to see. You soon learn to poke about in the general vicinity and you find them. Other than that I'd been happy with the unit. That is until I came home the other afternoon and the rangehood lights were on, and cannot be turned off other than with the Power Point. They were red hot so had turned themselves on some time during the day. Luckily I keep my filters clean, so there was no grease to potentially spontaneously combust. First thing I did was try and find a Delonghi serviceman in the Penrith area. If you have a coffee machine there's a million of them. Got an electrician out who said the printed circuitboard needed replacing, and I would be better going through DeLonghi. Contacted Good Guys who gave me the phone number of a company. They have quoted $336 to fix it, then there's the potential for the halogen lights to blow, so, either pay for them to be replaced with the circuitboard or pay $500 for a new one. I have decided to switch the PowerPoint on when I need to use it, and turn it off when finished. I'll wait for them to come on special. I would rather not buy DeLonghi again, but the electrician said the hole has been made to take that unit, so another brand may be slightly different and not fit. Not impressed at all.

Looks great but didn't last long – Price reasonable. Looked great but lasted only 4 years. Not happy as need to buy new one now. Show details

A stainless steel canopy rangehood above a gas cooktop.

What is the purpose of a rangehood?

A rangehood is an important aspect of your kitchen, as it removes smoke, steam, cooking odours, oil, grease, and heat to keep the air clean. Plus, it’ll also help stop smoke alarms from going off unnecessarily.

A rangehood is placed above your cooktop. Not only does a rangehood keep air fresh, but it also protects the cabinetry and appliances close to your cooktop from discolouration, degradation, and odour.

Types of rangehoods

There are 4 main types of rangehoods. The type you go with will largely depend on the layout of your kitchen, its size, your existing cabinetry, and your cooking needs.

Canopy rangehoods

Typically found in commercial kitchens, canopy rangehoods are the most common type of rangehood. They’re set either against a wall or above a kitchen island, and are usually made of stainless steel. Because they’re usually large, they’re usually quite eyecatching in the kitchen, and are very effective at sucking up steam, smoke, and smells due to their large collection area.

Pros
Usually perform the best as they usually cover the whole range area.
Ideal for those who entertain often.
Cons
Often more costly compared to other rangehoods.

Slideout rangehoods

Slideout rangehoods are installed into your kitchen cabinetry and slide out manually. They have a fan that turns on as you slide the rangehood out, as well as lights that illuminate the cooking area. These are also called retractable rangehoods.

Pros
Can be pushed away and out of sight once you’ve finished cooking, so they suit minimalist kitchens.
Suitable for apartments.
Cons
Often not as effective as canopy or fixed rangehoods (particularly if recirculating air), as they have a smaller air collection area.

Fixed rangehoods

Fixed rangehoods are designed to be mounted onto the wall, and typically cover the whole stovetop area.

Pros
Work better than slideout rangehoods as they cover more cooking area.
Cons
May be obtrusive and get in the way, particularly if it’s located around head height.
Not as sleek and minimal as other types of rangehoods.

Undermount rangehoods

Undermount rangehoods are installed into kitchen cabinetry directly above the cooktop. They’re popular due to how hidden they are. These are sometimes also referred to as concealed or built-in rangehoods.

Pros
Unobtrusive, as they’re quite unnoticeable.
Ideal for small to medium families or those living in an apartment.
Cons
Their limited size also means they are typically less effective, as they have a smaller air collection area.

Ducted vs. recirculating rangehoods

You can either get ducted rangehoods or recirculating rangehoods.

Ducted rangehoods suck in odours and vent them outside

  • They tend to perform better, as they're more powerful and effective at clearing air in the kitchen.
  • However, having one might not always be possible, as you may need a builder to knock a hole in the wall or ceiling to install ducting.

Recirculating rangehoods suck in air and filter them, and then put the air back into the kitchen.

  • They aren't as powerful as ducted rangehoods, but they’re the option for those who cannot send their rangehood fumes outside via ducting.
  • They're a bit more expensive to run because you need to replace the carbon filters every so often.
  • With some models, you can also choose from top or front circulation

What to look for in a rangehood

Size

Size is one of the most important considerations when selecting a rangetop. You should measure the width of your cooktop, as you should buy a rangehood of the same size or slightly larger in order for it to to effectively remove smoke, condensation, smells, and more. Most rangehoods are available in a width of 60cm or 90cm, although you can find larger units.

You should also measure the area above your cooktop to ensure the rangehood you’re considering purchasing will fit in your kitchen.

Airflow rate

The airflow or extraction rate is usually measured in cubic metres per hour (m³/h). The higher the rate, the greater amount of air that can be removed from the kitchen. Your desired airflow rate might also depend on the type of cooking you do. For example, if you have a larger kitchen or cook with a wok often, you might want to consider a higher extraction rate of over 700m³/h.

Features

  • Automatic on/off: A feature that automatically turns the rangehood on when you start cooking, and turns it off when you stop cooking.
  • Lights: Rangehoods will usually either have halogen, incandescent, or LED lights; LED lights use less power than incandescent lights. Look for a rangehood with two lights for better visibility.
  • Wi-Fi: Some rangehoods can connect to induction cooktops and will turn on once you’ve started cooking.
  • One-way flap: Some ducted rangehoods have a one-way flap (either built-in or as an add-on) that can keep hot air inside during colder weather and cold air inside during hotter months.
  • Countdown timer: This turns off the rangehood once the countdown is up, letting you set a time so that it can keep extracting residual heat, fumes, and odours even after you've finished cooking.

Exterior design

You might want to choose a finish that suits the aesthetic of your kitchen. While stainless steel rangehoods are common, you can sometimes also find white or black rangehoods.

A rangehood with a sleek exterior and no nooks and crannies can also make cleaning a whole lot easier.

Controls

Ensure that the controls on a rangehood are easy to reach and use. They’re generally easier to operate if they’re located on the front panel.

Usually rangehoods will have either control knobs, touch control, or buttons. Some higher end models also have soft-touch buttons that are easier to push.

Filters

All rangehoods will have a filter; some are dishwasher-safe and easy to clean, while others can’t be washed and need to be replaced, which means ongoing costs. Most ducted models will have aluminium filters which can usually be handwashed or popped into the dishwasher. If you get a recirculating model, it’ll use a carbon filter which needs periodic replacement.

Noise level

The noise level of your rangehood may be a deciding factor for you, particularly if you have an open plan kitchen where the noise might affect those wanting to watch TV in the next room.

Noise level is measured in decibels. It’s not uncommon for louder rangehoods to be more powerful, and vice versa. However, there are still plenty of models on the market that offer great suction power and are still relatively quiet.

We recommend testing out a rangehood in store at all its different fan speeds so that you can see whether it’s quiet enough for your needs.

Installation

Rangehoods need to be installed by a licensed electrician, while plumbers can install your ducting. Consider the cost of installation when you’re shopping around to ensure you stay within budget.

Cost

Rangehoods can cost as little as $100 for entry-level models and can go well above $5000 for premium models. However, you’ll find many decent models for under $1000.

You should also consider the running and maintenance costs of your rangehood, as well as the warranty for its different components, including labour.
