"getting stuck" going backwards and forwards for short distances. I took it to my pool shop and was told it was one month out of its 2 year warranty. However, Maytronics covered the repairs under warranty which was a pleasant surprise. I give the product 4 stars because when it's working it does a good job, and I appreciate that the repairs were covered by warranty even though technically they could have refused this. But it's not great that there were issues after only 2 years and 1 month.

into flotation devices. Before the machine will sink and do its job, you need to spend quite a while first "massaging" the rollers to get them to start soaking up water. Both drive belts snapped. The cord twists around itself in normal operation *very* quickly, and is very difficult to straighten out (hint - for goodness sake, buy a cordless model of whatever brand you get). The constantly twisted cord reduces the robot's operational range and at times threatens to pull the controller into the water. The connector housing where the cord goes into the body of the controller became loose very quickly, and with all the cord twisting, it eventually severed the electric wires completely, thus rendering the machine unusable. The carrier supplied by Robotek began rusting almost immediately. The climb function can't deal with curved steps, and would often get hung up at an awkward angle. The mapping function is poor, with the machine focussing on one half of the pool and largely ignoring the other half. The device can't handle leaves from palm trees and struggled with slightly larger leaves such as those from some magnolia trees nearby. At the end of the day, any labour time the device saves you is cancelled out by the the effort of managing this device and the fact I had to finish the job properly with the traditional pool vacuum/brush. Positives: the filter bags, though painful to install, picked up fine dirt and sand well, and are machine washable.

model but couldn't find a new one in stock so brought an ex demo that still came with the 2 year warranty. Have used it 4 times now and I am impressed, a great little machine. My pool doesn't get overly dirty but it can get a lot of small leaves in there, due to surrounding hedges if it is windy, which is what happened this weekend. There were small leaves all over the pool so was keen to see whether the robot would get them all and am pleased to say it did. I do have a ledge along one side of the pool and although the robot does climb up it, it is not sophisticated enough to move along in a straight line and clean the whole ledge so I just sweep this first. It does climb the walls and does the first two steps of the pool but not the top one as the water is too shallow. Was a bit concerned as the model I purchased was not designed for tiles and although most of the pool is pebblecrete, I do have a few rows of tiles at the water line but it still gets up that high and cleans them. I would definitely recommend it and it sure beats cleaning the pool manually which is what I have been doing for the last 3 years.

Three things sold me on the cx50 model, the two filters, the trolley for storage, and the ease of removing it from the pool by simply pressing a button to make it come to the surface. It’s very easy to operate. Lower it into the pool by the handle, (otherwise it can take a couple of minutes to sink), and press the “play” button. There is a choice of modes, one does the floor only, the other, walls and floor. It makes no noise whatsoever when running. When you want to get it from the pool, press the “lift” button and hold it down. The robot will turn on its axis. When it points to your favourite wall, let your finger off and it will drive up the wall. Then grab the handle and pull it out. The filters are easy to remove, just open the cover, lift them out and hose them. Then place it back on the trolley. I’m very happy with my purchase.

code and need to enter that into the app just to login to get the cleaner out of the pool or anything else that’s required. Most annoying and frustrating. The filter basket is good and easy to clean, the robot always turns the same way so tangles the power cord quickly, the amount of suction is a little poor and generates a cloud of fine dirt as it goes. For the cost of this cleaner I expected more.

Average at best. It feels the same as very early vacuuming robots—it works, but not very well. There's nothing smart or sophisticated about it, aside… Read more

from the very high price tag for what this robot is. The app is just for viewing, really, as its functions are limited to setting the cleaning time and choosing whether to clean the walls or not. You can do all of that from robot panel as well. When the robot is underwater, it doesn’t connect, making it useless. I would only recommend it if you have a large pool (ideally square for the robot convenience is not the smartest robot) with lots of debris sinking to the bottom, so you need constant vacuuming. You still have to take it out for charging quite often, which isn't the most convenient thing to do—it really defeats the purpose for me, at least. Update: The robot is dead after a year. I'm currently waiting for Medimac's warranty will see what happens.

Update: The warranty process was very smooth, which was a huge relief after the frustration of dealing with a faulty product. I’ve been upgraded to a current model, and it is much better—many of the previous issues have been addressed and rectified. It’s great to see a company not only standing behind its product but also making an effort to improve it. In a nutshell, the replacement is smaller, lighter, and more powerful. The improved cleaning patterns are making a real difference. My only criticism is that the warranty does not reset; it remains tied to the original purchase date. I believe every product should last for at least a full warranty period, and if a replacement is required, the warranty should start over from the date of replacement.

Inside the control unit the wires between the power supply and the socket are incredibly light duty. At a guess they must be rated for five amps tops. As a result the joints between the wire and the lugs on the socket appear to have deteriorated, causing the socket and plug to become so hot that the plastic melted. You can easily check for this problem by feeling the socket where the robot plugs into the control unit. If its hot get an electronics repairer to replace the flimsy wites before the unit dies, or worse. The video shows the old plug and socket, and the more robust Narva plug and socket

If you own a swim spa and you’re tired of dealing with tangled cords, bulky pool robots, or manual vacuuming, the Zodiac Spabot promises something… Read more

refreshingly simple:

Drop it in. Walk away. Come back to a clean spa in 60 minutes.

After running it in our standard swim spa — and comparing it to our previous Dolphin robotic cleaner — here’s what I found.

What It Is

The Zodiac Spabot is a cordless, battery-powered robotic cleaner designed specifically for spas and swim spas — not swimming pools.

Key characteristics:

• Fully cordless • 60-minute autonomous cleaning cycle • Designed for floors, seats, and lower walls • Self-contained filtration canister • No hoses, no external pump required

It’s positioned as a convenience cleaner for spa owners who want automated maintenance without the complexity of traditional pool robots.

Build Quality & Design

This feels engineered — not adapted from pool equipment.

The casing is solid and well sealed, with a sturdy integrated carry handle. The wheels are stable and the brushes feel durable and purpose-built for textured spa surfaces.

The most important design advantage?

No cord.

Our previous Dolphin robotic cleaner performed well, but the cord frequently tangled and, over time, began to perish from exposure to the elements — meaning an expensive replacement cable was inevitable. Managing the cord every clean became frustrating.

The Spabot removes that entire problem.

Design highlights:

• Compact footprint ideal for swim spas • Integrated lift handle • Easy-access filter lid • Balanced underwater movement

It feels purpose-built for spa environments rather than a scaled-down pool robot.

Performance – Real World Testing

On Paper:

• 60-minute cycle • Autonomous navigation • Floor and lower wall cleaning • Water detection sensor (activates when submerged)

In Reality (Standard Swim Spa)

Submerge it, release the trapped air bubbles as instructed, and it activates confidently.

In our swim spa:

• It navigated methodically and consistently • It made clearly visible cleaning passes • It handled fine debris and sediment well • It climbed lower wall sections effectively • It floated to the surface at cycle completion

Unlike our previous corded cleaner, there was no cable drag influencing movement. It moved freely and predictably.

The 60-minute cycle felt perfectly matched to the spa size — not rushed and not excessive.

Noise is minimal and operation is unobtrusive.

Battery & Charging

Charging is straightforward:

• Standard 100–240V charger • One full cycle per charge • Must dry fully before reconnecting to power

Battery life aligns closely with the advertised 60-minute run time. In a standard swim spa, that duration feels appropriate and effective.

This is a cycle-based maintenance tool — not a continuous-duty cleaner.

Ease of Use

This is where the Spabot genuinely excels.

Start process: 1. Turn on. 2. Submerge. 3. Release bubbles. 4. Let go.

That’s it.

No hose setup. No external power supply. No cord management.

When finished, it floats to the surface for easy retrieval.

Filter cleaning is simple: • Release latch • Remove canister • Rinse • Reattach

Maintenance is intuitive and low-effort.

Cleaning Effectiveness in a Standard Swim Spa

This is where I was most impressed.

In our swim spa:

• It removed settled sediment effectively • It reduced manual brushing • It noticeably improved clarity • It maintained a clean appearance between deeper cleans

It won’t replace proper filtration or water chemistry management, but as part of a regular maintenance routine, it delivers real, visible results.

For a standard swim spa, the coverage and cycle time feel well balanced.

What could be improved.

(To stay balanced)

• No app control or cycle customization • No spot-clean mode • Not designed for large leaf debris • Must dry before charging

That said, these are trade-offs that keep the system simple and cordless.

Value Assessment

You’re paying for:

• Cordless simplicity • Zero hose or cable management • Drop-and-walk-away cleaning • Reduced manual vacuuming • Freedom from expensive replacement cables

After dealing with a perishing Dolphin cord and ongoing tangles, the convenience factor alone adds significant value.

For swim spa owners, this feels intelligently priced for the problem it solves.

Verdict

Buy it if:

• You own a swim spa or spa • You’re tired of corded robotic cleaners • You want simple, repeatable maintenance • You value compact, purpose-built design • Great price

Skip it if:

• You want pool-level robotic power • Your spa regularly accumulates large debris • You want smart app integration

Final Rating (Standard Swim Spa Context)

Build Quality: 8.5/10 Ease of Use: 9.5/10 Cleaning Effectiveness: 8.5/10 Convenience Factor: 9.5/10 Value: 8.5/10

Overall: 8.5/10 — A Smart, Cordless Upgrade for Swim Spa Owners

We sourced our Zodiac Spabot through LJ and Kirrily at Heater & Spa Parts, and the experience made the purchase even better. They’re knowledgeable, attentive and genuinely invested in helping customers choose the right equipment for their specific spa setup. Having a supplier who understands not just the product, but the broader spa system and maintenance requirements, adds real confidence to ownership. Even their resident dachshund, Chip, contributes to the welcoming experience.

I think Madimack no longer make this model or any corded robots, they only seem to now do cordless. All that Aiper offered me was an insulting $30 discount on their overhyped new Surfer S2 (which they’re now pushing with a two-year warranty). This is just an admission by Aiper that their original S1 is unreliable junk that they knew would not last a reasonable period. Feeling very frustrated that the company doesnt explain that the new "iQ" 2026 model doesnt do what the old 2016 model did, I tried calling the company and getting some advice. I purchased in January this year and have rang 3 times and cannot get anyone to call me back. Each time I have rung there is no apology. Just "the technicians are busy and will call you back when they can"! 3 months is a long time to wait for a call back! I then thought I may need to bite the bullet and buy a specific spa cleaner. However the one the have on the website says it does not clean right angles (in other words it is not smart enough to know when it stops moving to reverse or go up etc). Of course I would be able to ask about this if they ever called me back. But they just wont. My advice is to buy one of the cheaper models out there as this one does less than my old one. It doesn the pool just fine - but that is the least you would expect. Not worth the money and incredibly poor after sales service.

brand. I am writing this review to warn potential customers about critical issues with product longevity and customer support. 1. Consistent Failure Just After Warranty Expiration I have now owned two top of the range robotic pool cleaners from this brand, and both have failed shortly after the warranty period expired. My most recent unit, the Barracuda Adventura, has stopped working entirely, displaying the flashing 'i' light error. After troubleshooting, the core issue appears to be an internal failure. When I contacted the company for assistance, they immediately quoted their policy, stated the cleaner was out of warranty, and offered absolutely zero support or repair options. This pattern strongly suggests a serious quality control issue where the product is designed to fail shortly after the coverage ends. 2. Absolutely zero customer service and no care factor The response from the customer service person (both via email and phone) was cold, unhelpful, and purely transactional. Despite clearly explaining that this was my second unit to fail in the same manner and asking for genuine troubleshooting help or discounted repair, I was met with boilerplate responses quoting policy, terms and conditions, almost robot like reading from a list bullet point responses. There was no attempt to understand the history of the product, offer a pathway to a resolution, or even show basic customer care. This lack of support for a premium-priced piece of equipment is unacceptable. They simply do not stand behind their product or value repeat customers. You are better off buying a cheaper, no-name brand with similar features, as the level of support you will receive from this company is effectively zero anyway. Lesson learnt, i'll never purchase another product from MyFluidra,Barracuda,Zodiac Pool Systems again.

shop's recommendation. It came with 2 years warranty. The first repair was required after approximately 12 months when the land power unit irreparably failed and needed a complete replacement. The second failure occurred just before its warranty expired and was the robot itself, it needed extensive repair/replacement to all its parts (control panel, motor, tracks etc). Now, another 6 months on, it has another complete failure. Given it is out of warranty, likely the cost of the repair will be cost prohibitive. Also, given its track record, it is likely to fail again soon after. Please do not buy this unit. It appears to be made of low quality components (all plastic bleached and started cracking after only a year, now at 2.5 years old it looks like it will disintegrate if you look at it a bit strong) that not only look aged quickly but fail quickly too.

units and three faults in less than 18 months, at which point my replacement unit is dead and Aiper is essentially choosing to discontinue assisting me.

I originally purchased my unit in November 2024. It worked well for 6 months then developed a fault (the power button didn't work, the unit turned on by itself when out of the pool, it would stop and start moving intermittently when in the pool). It was sent back for repair and then worked well again for 7 months, at which point it developed a new fault (it would not turn off with the power button, only on full draining of the battery). This time, instead of repair, a new 2025 model was provided by Aiper as a replacement, which was good of Aiper. That cleaner also worked well, until it didn't - which this time unfortunately only took 3 months, and the battery has died/the unit won't charge.

I've requested another replacement unit, however this time Aiper is only offering a refund on return of the faulty unit. They're using some dodgy nonsense excuse about not having any replacement units available to provide, despite having stock available to purchase in their store (which they say they cannot access for replacement purposes - apparently "after-sales inventory is separate from the stock available for sale on our website").

They have said I can repurchase a new unit after I receive my refund, however the issue here is that I paid $765 for my unit on sale, whereas the current price is $1199. So they want me to pay an extra $434 (or 56 percent more) to access a replacement unit, which is both extortionate and illegal under Australian Consumer Law.

I have notified them that this is unacceptable and am awaiting a response. I've refrained from writing a negative review up until now because the cleaner is good when it's working, and Aiper has been amenable in its follow-up service, right up until it has not. But this is a step too far and I feel people should be fully informed of the risks if they're considering purchasing this product.

Obviously these units have design/mechanical/battery issues (just have a quick look at reviews) and are unreliable in the long term. Support is patchy, and you need to bear in mind that if you're sending your unit back for repair or replacement every six months it might be weeks that you're left without a pool cleaner, which could harm your pool significantly, so it's best to have a back-up cleaner on hand (which you shouldn't have to have, but I recommend you do if you go down the Aiper path, as otherwise you will find yourself manually cleaning for extended periods of time, which totally defeats the purpose of having a pool cleaner). Would I recommend this cleaner? On balance, no. Reliability and after-sales service need to be considered along with initial price, and buying this cleaner from Aiper is clearly risky, unacceptably so now in my opinion, from my experience.

How do robotic pool cleaners work?

Robotic pool cleaners are electronic devices that are like underwater vacuum cleaners. They use suction and brushing to clean pool surfaces, including the pool floor, wall and steps.

They do this autonomously, using programming and sensors to map and navigate a pool in order to clean it, ideally with minimal human intervention.

A robot pool cleaner works using internal filters. Depending on the model, their filters can capture anything as small as fine sand, to larger debris, such as sticks, leaves, and pebbles.

Since they’re self-contained, all of this ends up in a built-in dirt receptacle that you need to empty and clean.

To begin a cleaning session, you’ll need to plug the pool cleaner robot into an approved GFCI outlet, put the cleaner vertically into the pool, and turn it on using the control panel or through a smartphone app.

Are robotic pool cleaners worth it?

Do they save time?

Manually cleaning your pool can be a thankless job that takes hours. It’s also an ongoing job - a particularly windy or rainy day can turn your pool filthy the day after you’ve cleaned it, an understandably frustrating experience.

The convenient set-and-forget functionality of a robotic pool cleaner means you can walk away while you have your pool luxuriously cleaned for you, saving plenty of time.

Do they save money?

Robotic pool cleaners are the most expensive type of pool cleaners you can buy. Most will set you back at least $1000, while the more premium models range up to $3000.

This seems like a hefty cost up-front, but reviewers who were happy with their robot pool cleaner’s performance often reported that the expense was justified.

If you prefer to pay a professional pool cleaner to take care of your aquatic slime and grime, a robotic pool cleaner that lasts a number of years may actually save you money paying the pool cleaner’s bills.

Robotic pool are also energy efficient, as they don’t rely on your pool pump, and they have their own filtration system. This ability to work independently means when the robotic pool cleaner is doing its job, you don’t have to run the pool pump and filter simultaneously, saving electricity.

You may still need to run your pool filter occasionally, but not as often as you would without a robot pool cleaner.

Factors to consider when buying a robotic pool cleaner

Suitability for your pool

Pool surface

Not all robotic pool cleaners can handle every pool surface. Pool surfaces can include concrete, tiles, fibreglass, vinyl, pebblecrete and quartzon. Most manufacturers will state whether the robot cleaner is suitable for your surface, but it’s good to do some independent research.

For example, if your pool surface is made from tiles or fibreglass, you need to source a robotic cleaner with a soft PVA brush with super grip. If your pool surface is made from a different surface, a universal rubber PVC brush or a wheeled brush is suitable.

Pool type and shape

Inground pools generally have more demanding cleaning requirements than above-ground pools, which are simpler in shape and design.

Pool shapes can include rectangular, oval, flat, free shape, gentle slope, composite slope or diamond. Some pool robots can struggle cleaning coves with certain pool shapes. It’s important to check that a prospective robotic pool cleaner can handle the requirements of your pool shape with ease.

Read reviews to see how effective certain pool cleaners have been

Reading pool cleaner reviews is a good way to see how well a certain model has performed in the past. Sometimes a pool cleaner is advertised as suiting a certain shape, but reviews can paint a different picture.

Cable length

The length of this power cord or hose is important (especially if you have a large pool), as robotic pool cleaners don’t come with extendable cables. Look for the maximum usable cable length, rather than the actual cable length, if specified by the manufacturer.

A robotic pool cleaner needs to be long enough for the cleaner to reach the furthest corner of the pool from the power supply. The power supply also needs to be at least 12 feet (or 3.66 m) from the pool edge, for safety reasons. If your pool cleaner’s cable is too short, it won’t be able to reach all areas of the pool, leaving part of your pool dirty.

Consider both your pool’s height and depth for above-ground pools.

Cleaning functions

What will it clean?

Some robot cleaners only vacuum the pool floor, but many others can also climb walls, stairs and ledges, and scrub the waterline.

If you’re already shelling out on a robot pool cleaner, it’s probably better to pay for the convenience of cleaning functions that can take care of your entire pool. A robot vacuum cleaner that can get into hard-to-reach places, including edges and corners, offers a more thorough clean. Reading reviews from pool owners with similar-shaped pools can be helpful.

If your pool collects lots of a particular type of debris (e.g. gumnuts or pebbles), reviews can also shed light on whether a robot pool cleaner model is effective at vacuuming this.

Cleaning cycles

Some robotic pool cleaners are equipped with a choice of cleaning cycles and programs. You may be able to choose a ‘floor only’ program, for example, instead of the complete floor, walls, and waterline program.

Most pool cleaners will take 2 to 3 hours to fully clean a 15-metre pool, but some more premium models have a quick clean cycle, which takes 1 hour to clean the pool.

Suction power

This affects cleaning performance, referring to how powerful your robotic pool cleaner is when it comes to sucking up the dirt and debris in your pool. Higher-end models have a suction power of 250L to 290L per minute.

Choosing a model with a high suction power is important if your pool attracts plenty of large debris, is made from pebblecrete, or you live in a particularly windy area and leaves, twigs, gumnuts are constantly swept into your pool.

Micron value

This refers to just how small the dirt or silt particles your robotic pool cleaner can vacuum are. A micron is a measurement of size, and refers to one millionth of a metre. A filter bag or basket with a low filter value is better, for example a 100-micron filter is better than a 200-micron filter, as it can filter out smaller particles of debris.

If your pool collects a lot of fine dust, sand or other silt, opt for a filter bag with as low a micron value as possible. Anything from 20 to 100 microns is a good number to aim for.

Dirt bin size

Not all manufacturers readily advertise the size of the dirt receptacle that collects all the debris. However, if a dirt bin is too small for your pool, it might hit capacity halfway through a clean and start leaking out debris, which can just make a mess of what's been picked up. If you have a large pool, look for a dirt bin of 4 litres and larger.

Weight

Robotic pool cleaners are heavy compared to other pool cleaners, weighing around 6 to 10 kilos. Since robot pool cleaners can’t stay permanently in the pool (which can lead to corroded parts), you’ll have to carry it to and from its storage spot. If it doesn’t come with a wheeled trolley, consider the weight of the cleaner.

Ease of cleaning

It’s recommended that you clean a robot pool cleaner after every cleaning session. Robots that let you push a button to release the filter canisters from the top make it easy to remove the filter and dirt bin, and empty them out.

Extra features

There are some features to look out for that can make your robotic pool cleaner easier to use and more effective at cleaning.

  • Dual scrubbing brushes: This may quicken the time of a cleaning cycle, and also provide for a more thorough clean.
  • Handheld remote controls: These let you spot clean stubborn areas with grime.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity: This lets you use an app on your smartphone to control cleaning sessions away from the pool. It lets you program weekly cleaning schedules.
  • Weekly timer: A weekly timer allows you to program your robotic pool cleaner to clean the pool at specific times and days during the week.
  • Full bag indicator: A feature that lets you know when your filter bag is full and needs to be emptied.
  • Wheeled caddy: A wheeled caddy lets you place your RPC into the trolley, to transport it to and from the pool and shed, or other storage facility. It makes it easier to lift and move your cleaner.

Wrapping up

If you're willing to pay for the luxury, a robot pool cleaner may be able to save you hours of manual labour and take the pain out of having a pool. Above all, make sure a robot cleaner is suited to your pool - its size, surface materials, shape and structure. Also consider the cleaning functions and type of debris it can pick up, and any extra features you'd like that will make the robotic pool cleaning experience even more convenient.
