pain from exercise and this has helped manage it. On those cold days I love having it on while working from home, no need for those little portable heaters anymore, I'd recommend to anyone who would usually grab a heat pack for pain relief or feeling a little chilly.

of 9 for body, 9 for feet) for a couple of hours and when I get in bed it’s just like body heat warmth. If you want it to be warmer within the hour then having it on over 6.6 is better. In bed it’s a different story, it heats up quicker if you turn it on while lying in bed. Either way, it’s comfy, you don’t feel the wires, it has four timer settings and it has prevented my hubby from getting cold/sick for the last two winters. We just turn it on early in the night so it’s ready in time for bed. Wouldn’t be without it.

chosen and the blanket is washable as the controllers just unplug from the blanket connector.

The only minor downsides are:

The blanket connector is not as close to the edge of the blanket as I would like and, depending on how you sleep, might rub up against your arm.

The controller switches from 0-1-2-3 which is normal, but having switches that are 0-1-2-3-0 would be better because if you have it on, you know going to either end will turn the blanket off, you don't even have to look at the controller.

Overall, though, great electric blanket.

would often go on sale for $25. I got one of these in 2019.

It had a nice large blanket (10cm more length than the typical cheapie) and a solid remote.

I got 4 winters out of mine with multiple washes and could have kept using it, though part of the cable housing came open, so I binned it out of precaution.

Nonetheless, it was a great buy overall: comfortable, durable, and presumably more than paid for itself in energy savings.

As a result, I purchased another one in 2023 for $89 (it's now a bit cheaper at $79), justifying the increased price based on my good experience with the last one.

But I opened it and found they had changed the product, evident by the new flimsy/hollow remote, and the addition of power on beeping sounds.

I kept it, thinking it should work the same. The blanket itself was still nice after all. And it indeed heated well.

But the remote should have been a warning that they are no longer built to last.

Because mine would no longer power on after 2 winters of use, rendering the advertised 2 year "peace of mind" warranty useless to boot (it broke just one month outside of it).

This is despite having been a lot more gentle with it than my old one, not even washing it nor running over it my office chair.

As a result, factoring in the higher upfront purchase price, I wouldn't have saved that much money compared to if I had judiciously used my old column heater over these two years.

Overall, I would not purchase this blanket based on the previously good reviews it received.

setting is 1 for the upper body and 2 for the feet on the colder nights. My wife prefers much warmer settings. So basically 4 separate climate zones from the 2 individual controllers. The Quilted topping is sufficient to mask the wiring network below and is rather comfortable. Timer settings for 1, 5, 8 & 12 hours allow for a wide variety of warming stints. Never had an issue with overheating in the blanket or the controllers.

be used under a blanket/doona in a layering system, or the heat they generate will be lost. Once set up correctly, they will produce a decent ammount of heat. We have tested down to -5 in a tent, and the feedback on highest heat setting was 'too hot'. Note, they do use a lot of power. Ours used about 6ah per night on full power, and given the timer is maxed at 3h, there would have been some downtime before it was switched back on. 5/5 great for family adventures

Needed to replace the electric blanket on our Super King bed. However, being a Super King has limits with the range of brands that support this size.… Read more

Previously had a Dreamaker Multi-zone Fleece-top which was serviceable but did not generate near the “heat” we had on our previous Sunbeam blankets. With a noticeable price difference in the two brands but wanting to get another Sunbeam we were able to source a Sunbeam “Sleep Perfect” Quilted electric blanket in a Super King size at a reasonable price. While not being a fleece and only a single zone, those previous options were not high on our list to be in a replacement.

Fitment Problem After unpacking the blanket and putting it on the bed, the first issue encountered was the fit. You really had to pull down hard on the sides to get the stretch mesh to reach down and be secured under the mattress. This left the quilted heating part well in from the edge of the bed (see photos at end of review). Our first thought was we had mistakenly been supplied with a standard “King” size blanket. However, the box and label on the blanket itself clearly stated “Super King”. It was only afterwards we notice the size shown below “Super King” was that of a “King” size.

After contacting the company that supplied the blanket, they investigated and found that Sunbeam had recently stopped producing “Australian” sized Super King blankets but were now supplying the Australian market with “New Zealand” sized Super King blankets. For some unknown reason, what New Zealand calls a “Super King” bed is what we call a “King” bed in Australia. The result is the Super King electric blanket that Sunbeam is now supplying in Australia was (apparently) designed to fit a NZ bed 20cm narrower (length stays the same at 203cm). The result is you have to stretch it wider width ways to get it to fit. While this is not a huge problem, what is more of a concern is that the hard plastic connecter where the electric cable joins the blanket is now a full 10cm closer in. The result being it tends to rub up against your shoulder while sleeping. One can only assume this was a choice by Sunbeam to reduce manufacturing costs through rationalisation of their product range. Sunbeam makes no mention of this on their site, however, the place I bought it from now does on their site.

Functionality Moving on from fitment issues, the quilt is comfortable to be lying on with no sense of the wiring contained within. Heat is good and met our criteria for what we wanted. Power lead/controllers are attached to the bed with a connector that is slightly difficult to align the prongs inside the blanket as well as being only able to be inserted one way due to locating “indents” (see photo at bottom of this review). Of more concern is the difficulty should you need to remove them (when storing away?). To remove the plug there are two prongs like harpoons and you have to put a couple of fingers through the narrow opening in the blanket to reach and squeeze the prongs together to release the connecter. The two controllers are easy to operate with a large mechanical toggle switch on the back which is easy to feel and operate without having to sight it. On the front are two square recessed buttons with one controlling the heat setting (1 – 6) and the other the operational time (1hr or 9hrs only). There is a blue light which then comes on to show the blanket has shut off after the preset time has expired. Sunbeam says the heat setting of “6” is for pre-warming only and should not be left on while sleeping. I can certainly echo that as after about 6 -8 minutes the bed simply becomes too hot for comfortable sleeping. Only issue is I felt the heating elements should come a bit higher up the blanket. They appear to stop below shoulder level.

I’d like to comment on reliability but it’s a little too early to tell. There is the reassurance of a 3 year full replacement warranty. Previous Sunbeam blankets I have owned made it more than 6 years with the only issue being having to replace a single controller (outside the warranty period).

What I liked * Good quality construction with both the blanket material and hand controllers feeling solid * Mechanical switch to shut off power to the blanket rather than the electronic one used on our previous blanket * Machine washable * Supplied 1.5m (approx) power cord

What I didn’t like so much * (Apparent) cost cutting by Sunbeam by selling Australian “King Size” blankets and labelling them as “Super King” with only the "cm size" of the blanket added to indicate otherwise. Who looks at the size when it is clearly labelled “Super King”? * Would have liked a 3hr timer setting too, rather than only being able to choose 1hr or 9hr

Overall, am happy with the blanket and its function. Would have given it 5 stars but for the size issue.

instructions let it down. The instructions talk about setting the control when there are 2 controls. One left side one right side. The guide refers to an LED to indicate the blanket is on, when there is numbers. I had purchased a queen size so smaller sizes will most likely have 1 controller. There should be diagrams for how to install the blanket. The instructions should also explain the expectations of the blanket. If this is your first electric blanket, you will question if the unit is even working. This blanket should be turned on max 30 to 40 minutes before getting into bed. Your bed will be amazing on the coldest nights. The instructions NEED to mention this wait time, as this will be the first time many customers will be using an electric under blanket. With a max output of 110W, its cheap to run and at current electricity prices that will be about 3 to 4 cents to warm your bed up (based on 37c/kwh) or just under a dollar to leave it on all day. Even though it will automatically turn off after 12 hours. So if you accidentally leave it on and went to work, that's about 50 cents and it will turn itself off. This product is not crap because of its function. Its a great entry level electric blanket and quite possibly the best $60 you'll spend on bedding. No, the issue with this product is the lack of any after thought about a 5 cent piece of paper called the instructions. Each blanket size should have its own instruction guide relevant to it as a single bed will probably have 1 controller. Telling people what to expect and how to use the product properly would make this a great addition for any linen closet. Its perfect for the guests in winter or as even a back up for more luxurious units. They should describe the goods as a "Fitted Electric Under Blanket" Also on smaller beds, the cord plug may be an issue while sleeping while the queen size is absolutely fine unless you sleep on the edge due to bed hogging cats.

An eye opening purchase, this is better than any previously experienced electric blanket – Our old electric blanket did a reasonable job but it was just that, old. What was a soft, fauxfleece covered top had worn down, over the years until… Read more

it was just material covering hard wires. It had fitted sides which was obviously designed with a conventional mattress in mind, we have a pillow-top mattress and the fitted sides didn't tuck under snugly, it was adequate for the job but just barely satisfactory.

*19/05/2024 we purchased our new electric blacket through Amazon Australia.

*28/05/2024 it was delivered & was put in place that very night.

Seeking a replacement was an eye opening experience because I discovered that I must have been sleeping on tight budget-minded, electric blankets for my entire life, 52 years, thinking that electric blankets were all the same and did pretty much the same thing.

Well, HALLELUJAH, I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT! I came across a multizoned, electric blanket, yep, both sides have two zones. One for the body and another for the feet, it has a timer too and temperature sensing cables for fire risk mitigation. The ability to have varied temperatures for body and feet zones is magic.

My first impressions of the Dreamaker Fleece Top Multizone Electric Blanket were even more eye widening.

FOUR IMPRESSIONS IMMEDIATELY STOOD OUT. I'm sorry to say my first standout impression was a slightly nitpicking and negative one. I was glad that I opened the box carefully as it DIDN'T COME WITH A ZIPPERED, REUSABLE BAG FOR STORAGE. I can't rate this electric blanket highly enough, I really do think this to be a very good purchase but as a package it wasn't complete to my mind. My former electric blanket was a much lesser quality one but it still came with a zippered storage bag should the user choose to store the blanket in the warm seasons. This dual zone electric blanket didn't, just a single use plastic covering and a cardboard box which will come in handy should we decide to take it off during our South Australian, outback summer's. This is my only negative comment and I know it's nitpicking, still it was legitimately, my first impression. I honestly felt that for the price I paid, it should've come with a storage bag of some sort.

The second of these four, standout impressions is that it COMFORTABLY FIT OUR PILLOW-TOP, QUEEN SIZED MATTRESS with ample side coverage to fully, amply & properly tuck in under the mattress. As mentioned before, our previous electric blanket was designed to fit a standard mattress but we have the thicker, pillow-top style and on our previous electric blanket, the fitted sides were barely adequate in size, only just tucking in on both sides by an inch or two.

The third stand out thing which I immediately noticed, THIS ELECTRIC BLANKET COVERED THE ENTIRE MATTRESS TOP Comfortably and has a larger, heated, element area. The heated element area of every other electric blanket I've used in my 52 years of life, just covered 65 - 75% of the bed, leaving a bit of room for the pillow area and an unheated area by the feet. I am 6 foot tall and if I fully stretched out, my feet would freeze. This is after making a concerted effort to pull the blanket away from the head, down to the feet area every once in a while but over time it'd migrate towards the middle of the mattresses length.

THE HARD PLASTIC LUMPY BIT THAT CONNECTS CORD TO BLANKET IS STILL HARD & LUMPY but ISN'T LOCATED UNDERNEATH MY UPPER RIBS, ARM OR SHOULDER AREA. Yep It's sited high up, under the pillow and nearer to the edge of the mattress. This was the fourth feature to immediately leap out and capture my attention.

*28/05/2024 I've just fitted it to the mattress and made the bed. It'll be some days before I can use it as we are caring for my 5yo grandaughter, her parents have been parted for a couple of years now, her father is a FIFO (fly in & fly out) worker in the Central Australian mines. Whilst he's at work we care for our granddaughter. Considering she is just 5yo and we're as old as dust, when her dads at work, she sleeps in Nanna's bed and Poppa (me) sleeps in the room shared by her & her father. He works for one week and has the following week off.

*9/06/2024 It's now been fitted and used for about 6 weeks and we love it. For me I preheat the bed for an hour before retiring for a good sleep. When I go to bed, I turn off the body portion of the blanket, have feet zone on with a 6 hour timer. My feet always have been like iceblocks in bed. My wife prefers both body and feet portions of the blanket to be heated but also sets the timer to shut off after about 7 hours (1 hour of which is preheating) . The timer goes upto a maximum of 11 hours, minimum of 1 hour. The 11 hours is a mandatory shut-off for safety. Even if you don't opt to use the timer, it'll still shut off after 11 hours (+ or - 30 minutes). Speaking of safety features, it's got temperature sensing cables. This safety feature blew my mind! Body and feet zones (for both sides) have 4 heat settings in addition to the OFF setting.

The cables are detachable for machine washing, when in a newer condition, our old electric blanket could be used as an underlay, between mattress and bedding. Even in summertime temperatures this fleecy underlay felt like it had a cooling effect on our bedding. This new dual zone electric blanket does not mention this as being a feature of its Fleece bed covering but I see no reason why it wouldn't also serve this purpose. That being said it's unproven, we are in June now (winter) and have yet to go through a warm season with this electric blanket.

One last point, my grand daughter is only 5yo and not able to give constructive feedback, however I can still state how we use it when she is in the bed. She sleeps on my side of the bed, I turn the body portion on & leave the feet area off. She isn't tall enough to need both heated zones and it allows my wife room to cool her feet should she feel overly warm.

Warm, snuggly and even saves on heating – I bought my original Dreamaker Chinchilla heated throw two years ago, and loved it so much I now have two of them, my sister has one, and I've… Read more

recommended it to multiple friends. They provide the option of personal heating without needing to heat the whole room, and are perfect for snuggling under when sitting on the sofa or at the desk.

The dreamaker heated throw looks very stylish, a lovely silver/grey combination, with faux chinchilla fur on the top, and a soft silver/grey finish underneath. It feels very soft and warm, and if it's not really cold, I sometimes don't even switch on its heating element, as it is quite warm as a throw rug anyway. It also has a very handy control with temperature setting and timer. In the middle of winter, when it's very cold, I tend to use it at its maximum temperature, and on a three hour timer, so it keeps me warm for hours but cuts off if I forget to turn it off at night. And if I'm at home alone, I often don't even bother to turn on any other heating, it keeps me so warm. It costs virtually nothing to power it, so I save heaps on my electricity bill this way.

The power controller is detachable, so I've washed the heated throw in my washing machine with no problems.

The heated throw works best to keep you warm if you tuck the edges under your body, so I have it sitting on my lap and legs, with the edges tucked under my backside and legs.

All in all, I would highly recommend this heated throw, particularly for people who are at home all day, or sitting a lot, as a way of keeping warm and comfortable without needing to use expensive room heating.

How do electric blankets work?

Insulated carbon wires distribute heat throughout an electric blanket or electric throw using attached power cord/s. Electric blankets only need to be switched on for about 10-30 minutes before bed for them to take the edge off chilly nights.

Trapping warm air between your quilt and mattress, they keep your bed toasty-warm during the night. This makes them a cheaper alternative to leaving a heater on all night.

Are electric blankets safe?

  • While they may have received some negative press, when maintained carefully and used sensibly, the answer is yes. All models are required to comply with strict safety standards before being sold in Australia.
  • Electric blankets should not be used by pregnant women, infants and toddlers under the age of three, pets, people with diabetes (as overheating can result in nerve damage) and those with poor circulation.
  • There are steps you can take to ensure maximum safety. Keep the blanket on a low setting, especially when leaving it on for a long period of time. While you can leave electric blankets on all night, avoid doing so to prevent the blanket - and you - from overheating.
  • Choose a model with an overheat protection sensor, which turns the blanket off if high temperatures are detected.
  • Replace your electric blanket every 10 years, or immediately if there are signs of bent or exposed wires, fraying fabric, burn marks, damaged cords, or any other visible wear.

Is it expensive to run an electric blanket?

Electric blankets and throws are gentle on your energy bill, with Energy Australia estimating they cost about four cents per hour to run. Selecting a blanket with a high energy rating also helps.

How to choose an electric blanket

Design and fit - should electric blankets be on the top or bottom?

Whether an electric blanket goes on the top or bottom of a fitted sheet depends on its design. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions on the packet to figure out how to get the best level of warmth from your electric blanket.

All of the following types of electric blankets are available in standard mattress size, so you can opt for an electric blanket for a single to king-size bed.

  • Over-blanket: This type of electric blanket is placed on top of your sheets, providing warmth from the top down.
  • Under-blanket: Also called a heated mattress pad, this sits between your mattress and fitted sheet. Under-blankets are available in either fitted or non-fitted designs.
  • Fully fitted: This electric blanket type is contoured to your mattress to fit over it snugly and completely. Choose a blanket the correct size for your bed. As these are slightly more comfortable and cover the whole of your mattress, they are dearer than non-fitted types.
  • Non-fitted: These tie down onto your mattress using straps. You can purchase non-fitted electric blankets for just one side of the bed. They're easier to put on than fitted types, and are also cheaper.

Heat Settings

Electric blankets allow you to choose your desired level of warmth. Typically there are three heat settings: low, medium and high. However, pricier blankets may be equipped with a more precise 1-10 heat setting range. Some electric blankets also feature different heating zones for different parts of the body.

Fast heating will also be a top priority on a cold winter’s night. Nobody likes cold sheets, so it’s useful to do some research on how long an electric blanket usually takes to warm up. Cross-check the manufacturer’s information on heating times against reviews by people who have bought the blanket.

More efficient electric blankets can heat up a bed in just 10-20 minutes. With slower electric blankets, you can diligently switch on your electric blanket half an hour before bedtime, but still be shivering when you jump into bed.

Comfort level

Wires

While regular blankets are created to be soft and smooth, electric blankets are designed with wires running through them. As a result, the material of an electric blanket should be thick enough that you can’t feel the wires poking through. This is especially the case for under-blanket designs.

Material

A comfier design may be achieved by quilted electric blankets, which are made with plush, multi-layered fabric. Electric blankets with a wool pile or wool fleece cover may also be thicker and softer than other materials.

However, it is still possible to buy a comfortable electric blanket that's made from a synthetic material like polyester. The material just needs to be thick enough that you don't feel the wiring underneath.

Control units

The control units of the electric blankets should also be positioned a comfortable distance away from your mattress. This means you won’t accidentally roll onto them in the night, and be woken up by an uncomfortable lumpiness under your back.

Handy extra features

Special features might hitch up the price tag of an electric blanket a little, but offer a more luxe and convenient warming experience.

  • Dual controls are available for non-single beds, letting partners pick their preferred level of warmth for their side of the bed.
  • Pre-set timers let you enjoy freshly warm sheets when you hop into bed at a set usual time each night. Keep on a low setting for safety.
  • Extra-warm foot zones help to banish cold feet.
  • Detachable control units are convenient because you can remove them to wash the blanket, so it lasts longer than a single season. Many electric blankets are machine washable once you remove the controllers. Make sure to check the washing instructions from the manufacturer first, though.
  • Illuminated controls mean that if you have to switch off the blanket or adjust the setting in the dark, you can still see.
  • Waterproofing is a safe and convenient feature if you have kids or pets that are more than likely to get a few splashes on the electric blanket.

Price

Heated Throws

A heated throw is a type of electric blanket that's thin, portable and made for one person.

The difference between an electric blanket and a throw is that an electric blanket is fitted to your bed, whereas an electric throw is portable, letting you enjoy warmth no matter where you are in the house.

Why choose a heated throw blanket?

  • A nifty alternative to spot heaters. Instead of stationing yourself stoically before the heater to stop shivering, an electric throw gives you wraparound warmth as you lounge around watching TV or reading, or as you relax on the porch with a hot drink.
  • Light and comfortable due to their intended purpose to be used all day long. They’re usually made of a soft material like microfleece, these blankets are light and comfortable.
  • Don’t be as cold as ice. If you’re using a space heater, you usually have to leave behind your well-earned warmth when you move into a different room. However, a heated throw is an easy way to take your heat source with you.
  • Doesn’t depend on your room type. If you have an open plan living room, heat generated by a space heater can leak out. In the daytime, an electric throw keeps you warm no matter your space and its dimensions.
  • Most throws are spill-proof, making them safe if you accidentally spill a drink onto them. Some throws also repel wind if you're outside.
  • Cheap to buy as a heated throw can be purchased for as little as $35.
  • Can still be paired with a room heater to maximise the warmth provided by a heated throw.
