an error message 'attach steam tip'? I use the machine for one coffee a day, occasionally two, and it is cleaned and descaled regularly as reminded by the automatically generated message. I contacted Nespresso re this fault, and they were great! I can't fault them. I packed up the machine and took it to the post office to be sent off for repair four days ago, postage is covered by Nespresso. (I had to buy a box and bubble wrap from Bunnings for approx. $6.00). Today I have received notification that it has been fixed and will be delivered back to me today, just in time for the weekend! I have been very happy with my purchase and really impressed that I wasn't out of pocket for the repair, and the quick turnaround. Hopefully my machine will last for many more years.

leak from the base. Just be aware of this. The coffee’s fine but once the leak sets in you’ll know about it. The pressure becomes weaker then too. didn’t require Lavazza coffee pods. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with Lavazza’s blend, it simply doesn’t deliver that "great" taste. I bought the Desea after my old Caffitaly S23 sprung a leak, and while the Lavazza far outshines it in build quality, the coffee output is another story. Using Grinders Crema pods with the Caffitaly, I consistently enjoyed a café-quality flavour. In my opinion, Grinders pods are about as close as you can get to coffee shop standards in a capsule. Sadly, Grinders doesn’t produce compatible pods for the Lavazza system—and likely never will. Now I’m left with an excellent machine that may end up collecting dust… or worse, heading to the council tip.

My machine has started leaking, a slow seep. It is constantly sitting in a puddle of water. It was only a couple of months old when I noticed it and I spent the next couple of months making sure it was the machine, not user error.

Now to the customer service, or lack thereof. To have my faulty $1,100 coffee machine looked at, I have to pack it up, take it to a post office and send it back to them. They'll look at it and decide what to do from there. We'll be without our coffee machine for at least two weeks, not to mention the inconvenience of having to return such a large machine.

I've been a faithful Nespresso customer for 15 years. I'm on my fourth machine. Had I realised their faithful clients are now being treated as a number, I would have bought the Breville Barista I was considering.

Note Added: After lengthy discussions, Nespresso were able to resolve my machine problems to my satisfaction. Despite Australia Posts's usual attempts to mutilate a successful conclusion, I am now enjoying my morning coffee, made with with my non-leaking Virtuo Creatista. Thank you, Nespresso.

As a concept the machine is a great idea, in reality it’s rubbish. The cartridges they use to allow for different coffee options are poorly designed.… Read more

A standard Nespresso coffee pod does not fit inside the cartridge and is forced/squeezed in to the cartridge to be used. After you deepened the coffee you have to remove the cartridge which is hot, pop the cradle that holds the pod to release the pod which is also hot then remove the pod from the cartridge and throw it away, which is also hot. But the biggest pain is the residual stoppage after dispensing coffee. The cartridge drips for at least 30 seconds after machine has stopped. We take the cartridge out of the machine after each use to wash it and to stop it dripping but this is also painful because the hot water drips onto your hand and burns you. The Nespresso cartridge simply is badly designed, where the coffee comes out from the cartridge bottom, there seem to be a chamber that stores the coffee before it come into the cup, this chamber seem to always be full of water coffee and after a while I’m sure it’ll be full of mould as the chamber always seems to have water in it even after it siting in the sink for hours.

The water tank is another problem, it just doesn’t open easily to fill the tank it also has issues. There are lugs on each side of the lid and the lid doesn’t just simply open, you literally have to force it open to the point of nearly breaking it. Again just another issue that no thought went into. The tank only holds enough water for the long blacks, that’s it!!

This unit is cheap and nasty in its design and construction, it does make good coffee although making this coffee has it’s challenges.

Making ground coffee, coffee is messy and trying to empty the cartridge is hot wet and messy, in a traditional barista machine after coffee is dispensed a coffee cake is left behind which is thrown away, no such luck with this unit.

All I’d like to finish with is just as well we only paid $145 otherwise I would take it back and throw it at someone. I wouldn’t recommend this unit to anyone.

Simply Brilliant – Sorry to read that reviewer mikerv had what seems to be a dud machine and little back up support from Mistral. My experience of the machine has been… Read more

the opposite, however I can't speak for back up service as I haven't needed any, so probably keep that in mind. Had the machine for over 6 months now and it has been given an absolute flogging by my husband who would make 4 to 6 cups of latte type coffee a day. I have used multiple coffee machines over the years ( all reviewed) with varying degrees of success. I avoided the capsule type as I didn't like the idea of consuming something that involved steaming water penetrating plastic and then having to dispose of more plastic. So when they changed the capsules to alluminum I decided to give them a go. It heats up blindingly quick, we are talking a couple of minutes. We use Lavazza capsules but any brand of similar size will do ( if the box the capsules come in says 'capatable with Nespresso coffee makers' then you are good to go). Extremely simple to use: fill the water compartment, turn it on, wait for the flashing light on the front to stop flashing and then press the button of the size of cup you want. Both sizes are quite small so we pick the larger size and use the strongest coffee capsule to get a full bodied brew with a decent amount of crema (see photo). The result is a warm and close to a good quality barista coffee. However if you like your coffee hot you will have to zap it in the microwave. I like mine somewhere in the middle of luke warm and hot so I only zap mine for 10 seconds and I can't detect any change in the flavour or quality of the coffee. We then add the whipped milk from our Expressi milk frother (see my review). It has paid for itself in coffee already and if it lasts for another 6 months it will have been well worth the purchase price. Bought from an Australia Post agent $99. Pros: so far the best "cheap" coffee machine I have used. Fool proof to operate due to being a capsule machine, fits all capsules that fit Nespresso machines, slim design so takes up little benchtop space and produces quality barista type coffee. Cons: coffee only warm so if you like your coffee hot may not be suitable for you.

but definitely worth it.

Aldi sold this as a special and I replaced the crapy one I recently brought with this one. It has different temperature setting and also coffee size settings it also offers a much larger tank size but still offers a compact machine. Where as I previously complaint about the temperature issue with the other models, this one lives up to my expectations of hot coffee

The only disadvantage is as it can use both pods and ground beans you need to dispose of the coffee straight away as it does not offer a pod waste bin. I also had to remove the drip tray as my cups were too tall

If Aldi offer this product again and you only have the current model. I would strongly recommend you spend the extra money and get this one.

The Morning Coffee Machine delivers on its promise – Summary The Morning Machine, with its unique capabilities, brings you as close to barista-made coffee as you can get from a capsule/pod system. It's… Read more

not about matching your barista's skills but about getting that quality coffee with minimal effort. It's the convenience of a capsule machine but with the added advantage of customisable settings that allow you to create coffees that rival your local coffee shop's offerings. It's like having a barista in your kitchen, ready to brew your favourite coffee at your command. The Morning Machine is not just a coffee maker. It’s a tool for those who want more control over their coffee. It's for the coffee connoisseurs who want to experiment with different settings and create their perfect cup of coffee. But if you are prepared to invest a little time in the process and experimenting, you might be more suited to a basic machine

My story I’m an over-thinker I spent months researching a replacement for the Gaggia Classic Pro While I loved the manual espresso machine, making a coffee at home was a bigger task than I wanted it to be. I had plenty of local coffee shops where I could get my daily coffee, so the capsule machine seemed to be the way to go in between coffee shop visits.

I came across the Morning Machine, and because I like technology, its special features, including the ability to alter the temperature, yield, and pressure, kept me curious and made me research it more. I wanted to know if it was any different to any other capsule machine.

One of the attractions of the Morning Coffee Machine ecosystem is its links to artisan coffee roasters worldwide. Morning Coffee sells these capsules through its store; most have a recipe on the Morning Coffee app. This allows you to brew the capsule the best way the roaster says.

You don't have to use any of the capsules the seller sells, as any comparable Nespresso capsule will work in the machine. However, having a dialled-in recipe is intended to ensure the best results.

You can get the machine's precise details from the Morning Coffee website.

The website says the machine is for coffee aficionados and busy professionals

It says you can dispense the perfect cup every time by calibrating temperature, pressure profiles, and your preferred water-to-coffee ratio!

One of the unique features of this machine that you won’t find anywhere else is its built-in recipes and blooming and pre-infusion functions. These advanced features are designed to maximise the extraction flavour in every brew, giving you a truly artisan coffee experience.

If you don’t want to use the app and its recipes for specific brand capsules, several built-in recipes cover basic coffees and roasts. On the other hand, if you wnat to make it more like a regular Nespresso machine, you can select a classic setting and use only one button.

The machine is packed with technology. It connects to Wi-Fi to get firmware updates and talk to the app, and it has an extensive menu to guide you through setup and maintenance. You need to be prepared to invest some time in this technology to get the full benefits of the machine.

After using the Morning Machine for more than six months and experimenting with its settings, I am more than impressed and happy with my results.

First is the recognition that this is not an espresso machine that will serve up your two-shot flat white your barista makes for you at your favourite coffee shop.

That double-shot espresso uses between 18g and 22g of coffee and outputs between 40 to 47g of coffee liquid. The capsule uses between 5g and 6g of ground coffee, and depending on the rooster's recipe, you get between 20g and maybe 30g.

From my reading, I learned that the espresso and capsule brewing processes are very different in how the water is pushed through the coffee, and the pressure involved is greater in the espresso process. Understanding this difference helped me appreciate the unique characteristics of the Morning Machine and how it affects the flavour and strength of the coffee it produces.

In my research, I discovered little information exists about the changes you need to make to coffee input, pressure, and time if you want to do something other than load a single capsule and hit the button.

I aimed to emulate a double-shot flat white using capsules - possibly two. For instance, when I aimed to emulate a double-shot flat white using capsules, I was initially told that it wasn’t simply a matter of loading two capsules and using the total yield of both. The suggestion was that I needed to reduce each capsule's yield to get the final volume's balance. This required adjusting the machine's settings, which I learned to do through trial and error and some guidance from the roasters.

I set about writing to roasters to get their ideas and even discussed it with one of the coffee roasters who wrote the app recipes for their brand of coffee.

The settings are slightly different for each roaster capsule I used, but the recipe when using two capsules is 20-22g output of coffee at 93-95 degrees and the pressure in the original recipe. My flat white uses around 150ml of milk -- which means I end with the equivalent of a single shot of flat white

I have been using the Morning Dream - the new milk steamer from the Moring Coffee company. This has verified everything I trialled in my testing. I can now make the equivalent of a single-shot flat white coffee that goes close to the coffee stratification I get at my local coffee shop.

Conclusion: The Morning Coffee machine has given me the ability to enjoy barista-style coffee at home through the convenience of a capsule machine. Its technology might not be for everyone and often takes patience and time, but for me, the results are worth it, You should buy this machine if you want more than the basics from a machine and you are looking for consistently good home coffee.

The Nespresso Citiz coffee machine with cup of coffee besides a box of pods

How do coffee pod machines work?

You simply fill up the water tank at the back beforehand, then drop a compatible coffee capsule into the machine via the silver lever in the image pictured. Press the button for your chosen size/strength of coffee. This pierces the capsule, mixing the coffee inside with hot water to pour your shot.

Usually a capsule coffee machine has 2-3 buttons, to make a risretto, espresso or lungo. A risretto has the least caffeine but also the least water, making it the most concentrated shot type. A lungo contains the most caffeine, but also the most water, so tastes more diluted.

Some models have an integrated milk frother or one that uses a steam wand. More advanced models let you further customise your brew. For example, the Breville Nespresso Creatista Plus lets you choose the temperature, milk texture and type of drink you prefer, like a latte or cappuccino.

Do coffee pods work in all machines?

No, unfortunately not all coffee pods are compatible with all machines. For example, if you buy an ALDI Expressi Machine at selected times of the year, you'll then need to buy the compatible Expressi coffee pods, which are available exclusively from ALDI.

Nespresso machines are a little different; there are now several non-Nespresso brands that sell compatible capsules. Some of these include L'OR, Mocconna, and Starbucks capsules, all of which are available from your local Coles.

Some other pod machine brands like the award-winning Philips L'OR Barista Latte also accept capsules with boxes labelled 'Compatible with Nespresso pods,' making them more convenient to use.

Are capsule machines worth it?

Pros
Quick and convenient, thanks to speedy heat-up and brewing times
Suitable for beginners to using home coffee machines
Easy to clean, as there aren’t any small or intricate parts
Cheaper to purchase than other coffee machines, including manual coffee machines, semi-automatic and automatic
Cons
Hardcore coffee aficionados may find the coffee made in a coffee capsule machine lacking a full-bodied flavour
Sourcing compatible pods for your machine may be tricky if supply is limited, for example if you have an ALDI coffee machine but you don’t have an ALDI store near you to buy their exclusive pods
More expensive to run than other coffee machines due to the ongoing purchase of pods – but it’s still cheaper than going to the café

Capsule coffee machines are quick and easy to use, which is ideal when you're trying to rush out the door in the mornings. DeLonghi’s Nespresso Citiz and Essenza Mini both have a heat-up time of 25 seconds.

You also don't have to spend time making ground coffee like you would with a manual coffee machine, or fiddling with an excess of buttons, which is sometimes the case with an automatic coffee machine.

Funding a daily cafe habit can get expensive. This makes a coffee capsule machine an ideal kitchen companion for anyone who craves a well-brewed cup, but doesn't want to pay handsomely for the luxury.

It's true that coffee pods pose an ongoing expense (averaging around $5 for a pack of 10 from Woolworths). However, considering you could buy about one barista-made coffee with this amount, they still work out to be cheaper than going to a cafe.

Environmental impact Leaf icon

Since most aluminium or plastic pods aren't recyclable, the majority end up in landfill every year.

Conscious coffee drinkers can look into options like SealPod, a reusable stainless-steel coffee pod. It's compatible with a number of machines, such as Nespresso, Aldi K-fee, Caffitaly and Nescafe Dolce Gusto. Nespresso also has a recycling program, which you can read more about below.

What is the best brand of coffee pod machine?

Nespresso takes the win

Nesspresso has planted its seed far and wide when it comes to pod coffee. You might recall the Nespresso ads featuring a suave George Clooney, or the brand's colourful boutique pop-ups in your local Westfield's. Thankfully, the brand has matched its advertising efforts with quality coffee, according to reviewers. The top three rated coffee pod machines listed below are all Nespresso coffee machines.

Nespresso also makes recyclable aluminium pods, as an eco-friendly alternative. You can save used Nespresso-branded pods and return them to Nespresso for recycling - either at a boutique store, at a drop-off collection point or by posting them to Nespresso.

Factors to consider when buying a coffee pod machine

Versatility

Range of programs

More basic coffee pod machines have 1-2 buttons - offering small and large shot options. If black coffees are your go-to caffeine hit, or you’re perfectly happy with your machine brewing espresso and adding your milk afterwards, there are machines like this that are also high-rated and affordable.

However, if you shell out a bit more, a coffee pod machine will be equipped with more programs, giving it crossover functionality with an automatic coffee machine. For example, the Nespresso Breville Creatista Plus can make a latte, cappuccino, and latte macchiato. This is in addition to the 3 sizes of espresso - ristretto, espresso and lungo - that many coffee pod machines can make.

Range of coffee pods

Just because your coffee pod machine has only 2 buttons and no fancy drink selections, it doesn’t have to limit your choices. Sometimes it’s the pods that offer the variety in drink choice. For example, the K-fee pods for an ALDI Expressi Machine include chai latte and hot chocolate, along with making an ordinary black or white coffee.

Ease of use

One of the best things about coffee pod machines is their simple design, especially when compared to other types of coffee machines. When checking ease of use, make sure all buttons are clearly labelled, that the lever for the pod compartment is easy to open and close, and that removable parts - like the water dispenser tank and used pod container - are easy to detach and clean.

If you’re opting for a more premium model with a digital display, see if you can have a play around with the display in-store to make sure it’s easy to use.

Consistency

A pod machine that’s consistent in its coffee-making performance will be a coffee machine you can rely on. The best way to determine whether the machine will give you consistent results is to read reviews by people who have already bought the machine.

When reading reviews, look out for comments about the consistency in taste, in the amount of coffee per shot, shot temperature, crema texture and colour, and milk texture; if your machine has a milk frother.

Milk frothing

If you’re a fan of milk-based coffees, a pod coffee machine with a milk frother can make you tastier coffees.

A milk frother uses steam to aerate milk, which adds froth to it. A good milk frother will help achieve that satisfyingly silky, creamy texture to milk that makes a fresh brew feel more like a barista-quality coffee.

There are two options, an integrated or standalone milk frother.

Integrated milk frother

This is also called an automatic frother. You just need to press a button, and the in-built milk frother will get to work preparing the milk you’ve placed into the included jug, which may be stainless steel, glass or plastic. Since a milk frother is not a standard feature of a coffee pod machine, you’ll have to pay extra for an integrated frother.

Standalone milk frother

This is a manual milk frothing accessory that’s purchased separately to the machine. The good news is that these can be bought for cheap, and include anything from handheld whisks to sturdy 6-cup electric frothers.

Other features

  • Removable water dispenser: Any prospective coffee pod machine should have a water tank that’s easily removable from the back of the machine, so you can refill it with no dramas.
  • Water tank size: If you’re constantly brewing cups daily, or there are multiple coffee drinkers in your household, a machine with a larger capacity will be convenient. Smaller tanks are around 600mL, while larger tanks are about 2 litres.
  • Quick heat-up time: This is handy if you’re usually rushing to get out the door in the mornings. Higher-end coffee pod machines feature quick heat-up times as short as 3 seconds, compared to the 25 second heat-up time or longer seen on more affordable machines.
  • Auto shut-off: This feature automatically switches off the machine after a set time if it’s inactive.
  • Cup warming tray: While this is a bit of a rarity of a capsule machine, this can be a handy addition if you're not able to get to drinking your coffee straight away.

Wrapping up

Compared to their semi-automatic, automatic and manual counterparts, coffee pod machines are quick and easy to use and clean. If you're not a highbrow coffee conoisseur, a capsule machine also brews a decent cup of coffee by most people's standards. Before buying, do research into a pod machine's range of programs and features, eco-friendliness, consistency in performance, convenience in sourcing pods, and its price.
