first consultation, including poor attention to detail and communication difficulties that made it hard to feel confident in the advice provided. I also felt that my request for appropriate antibiotic treatment was not properly addressed, and the medication provided did not appear to be the most effective option for my situation. As a result, I had to organise a further appointment with a different doctor, which caused unnecessary time, cost, and inconvenience. I would encourage the clinic to place greater focus on clear communication, careful assessment, and ensuring patients feel properly heard and supported.

refunded for, was rescheduled on THEIR end 3 times, even though the booking was over 3 weeks away. I went to change to 'next available' and was expecting a call at 3pm one day, and NEVER got the call, not even the next day. When I logged in to the app (which is also VERY clunky), it was still showing my wait time eta was 1hr 45m, which didn't suit me that day, so I rescheduled to a future date, and it got changed on me AGAIN!!! (Note both of the bookings were 3weeks or so in advance, so no idea why it kept getting changed so early). Wanting to try the 'next available' again, I was expecting a call by 6pm and as I'm someone who gets up at 4am for work, I was disgusted when I got a text at 7:43pm then a call at 7:44pm, waking me up. Due to it being a random mobile number I cancelled it then got text messages about missing the appointment. I will not be renewing my script with Youly again, as the value is no longer matching the cost.

I have had issues previously with not receiving timely calls, despite me booking a time slot. This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. I am considering getting the Ombudsman involved, because only then will you be treated like a valued customer. I will look for another medical provider, as I need a certain degree of service, one that Medmate has proven not be able to provide. I would recommend, run from them!

I booked an urgent telehealth consultation with Qoctor and paid the additional priority fee expecting to speak with a doctor within about 15 minutes.… Read more

In reality, I waited around 30 minutes before the consultation began.

During the call, the doctor appeared rushed and repeatedly interrupted and spoke over me while I was trying to explain the reason for my consultation. He then stated he could not hear me properly and that he would refresh the browser, after which he abruptly ended the video call and never reconnected.

I later received an email stating that my request had been cancelled due to incomplete medical history. My concern is not about whether the referral was approved, but the unprofessional conduct during the consultation and the complete lack of follow-up after the call was terminated.

A woman wearing a surgical mask attending a telehealth appointment over video call.

What is telehealth?

Telehealth involves a remote consultation with a healthcare provider when it’s determined that a physical examination isn’t necessary. Telehealth services are also used when you can’t see your healthcare provider in person. They can include diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Healthcare providers that can provide telehealth services include general practitioners (GPs), specialists, allied health providers, nurses, and mental health professionals.

Before the onset of COVID-19, telehealth services were mainly used by those living in remote areas or who didn’t live near the medical specialists they needed to access. However, now these services are widespread and able to be accessed Australia-wide.

Is telehealth right for me?

Whether telehealth is right for you will largely depend on your location and how accessible your desired healthcare provider is, your access needs, time commitments, and personal preferences. There may be some instances where you’d choose to use telehealth services, and others where you’d attend face-to-face appointments.

Here are some pros and cons of using a web doctor or telehealth service.

Pros
More accessible and convenient than face-to-face healthcare, particularly for those who don’t live near the healthcare providers they wish to access.
Saves time travelling to and from appointments.
Reduces chance of infection, particularly during a pandemic or flu season.
Cons
Not all appointments can be done via telehealth, as sometimes there’s a need for a physical examination, procedure, or in-room treatment.
Technical difficulties or computer illiteracy may affect access to telehealth.
May be harder to discuss certain health topics over phone or video call.

Is telehealth covered by Medicare?

This depends on the healthcare provider. All Australians with a Medicare card can access telehealth services from certain healthcare providers without paying more than they usually would for an in-person appointment.

That means that if your appointments with your GP are bulk-billed, your telehealth appointment with the same GP will also be bulk-billed. If you pay a gap fee, then you’ll pay the same gap for a telehealth appointment.

There are also many online health providers, partiularly startups, that do not offer any Medicare rebate, which means you’ll pay the full cost of the service out of pocket.

Make sure you're eligible for a Medicare rebate with your GP

Check with your GP first to see whether you’re eligible for a Medicare rebate for a telehealth appointment. To be eligible for a Medicare rebate, you must have had an in-person consultation in the previous 12 months with the same GP or another GP at the same medical practice.

What to look for when choosing an online doctor or telehealth service

Services

You can find a variety of health services offered by different online providers. Some online health services specialise in certain areas of healthcare. For example, Kin Fertility specialises in reproductive health, and offers a contraceptive pill subscription service, which involves consults with a GP via text message and medication delivered straight to your door.

Similarly, Stigma Health offers discreet STI testing, allowing you to get a referral for testing without seeing a doctor, and sending results of your test straight to your phone.

Generally, e-health websites do not offer services for medical emergencies.

Communication

Check the communication methods offered by a provider, such as video, phone, email, or text consultations, and choose a provider that offers a method or methods that suit you.

Ease of use

Considering most or all of the service is done online, via video chat, or over the phone, it should be easy to navigate without assistance. Look for an easy sign-up process for online services, as well as easy-to-reach customer support, just in case you run into any issues on the website. If the service has a mobile app, look for a user-friendly interface that’s easy to understand.

Read reviews to see how accessible an online health service is

Reading reviews to see how simple an online service is to use will help you decide whether you want to try it or not. Reviewers on ProductReview.com.au discuss things like how easy it is to make an online appointment, how quickly their medication or results arrive, and how user-friendly they find the website or online portal of the service they’ve used.

Availability

Although telehealth doctors and services are seen as more convenient, you may still have to book an appointment well in advance. Check wait times, appointment duration, and compare your schedule to the operating hours of the service to ensure it’s easy for you to access.

Quality of care

Looking for reputable, experienced healthcare providers can help ensure you have a positive experience. Look for the credentials of a doctor to learn more about their area of expertise. Again, reading reviews can help you figure out whether practitioners are informative, helpful, and empathetic.

Privacy and security

If the privacy of your personal and medical data is a concern to you, make sure the healthcare provider has strong privacy and security measures in place to protect your information.

How can I get a medical certificate without going to the doctor?

If you’re too sick to leave bed but you need a medical certificate, then there are services that can help you. Now, there are plenty of online services, such as InstantScripts and updoc, that let you get a medical certificate without a face to face consultation with a GP. These completely online services usually come at a cost, usually costing between $20 to $25.

Some pharmacies, like Priceline, also offer medical certificates at a cost, letting you skip the doctor’s waiting room.

The bottom line

Online doctors and telehealth services offer a convenient way to access the healthcare you need, particularly when a face-to-face appointment isn’t necessary. Knowing what services are out there, whether you’ll have to pay, and how to choose a service that suits your needs will help you keep on top of your health and wellbeing.
