I recently had a claim denied by Budget Direct, and my experience has been extremely disappointing. It felt as though their first instinct when a… Read more

claim is lodged is to look for reasons to deny it, rather than genuinely assess and support customers through the claims process.

The company appears to invest heavily in marketing, advertising, and paid endorsements, including recognition from organisations such as Canstar, which can create an impression of customer value and reliability that does not align with my claims experience.

Insurance is ultimately tested when you need to make a claim, and unfortunately this is where my experience with Budget Direct fell well short of expectations.

Coles Home Insurance is hands down the worst insurer I’ve ever dealt with. They lie, delay, and dodge responsibility at every step. I’ve been waiting… Read more

endlessly for my claim to be resolved, and every time I ask for updates, I get excuses, false information, or silence.

They will do anything they can to avoid paying — twisting reports, ignoring evidence, and even sending out the wrong or unqualified contractors who make things worse instead of fixing them. Their behaviour is completely unacceptable for a company claiming to provide “protection.”

I’ve now had to take the matter to AFCA because Coles refuses to do the right thing. Their treatment of customers is shameful, and their lack of integrity is beyond belief.

If you value honesty, professionalism, and peace of mind — stay as far away from Coles Home Insurance as possible. They are a total nightmare.

At far as I am concerned dealing with RAC has been one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. They are super cocky & tell you if you aren’t happy… Read more

just complain to AFCA, well my advice would be don’t waste your time. We had several issues including way undervaluing everything that was damaged & not one of the complaints I lodged with them went in my favour. We have been insured with RAC for 11 years & had one other claim so hardly be a bad customers to them & your are not believed at all & the argument I had with DAWN WOOD from RAC Complaints Resolutions department was next level. As far as I am concerned RAC & AFCA are a legal SCAM. From this experience I would will be thinking twice about having household insurance again, it definitely shouldn’t be this hard & the complaint took 2+ year to come to a conclusion. They come & removed 1/2 the ceiling in the lounge room & carpet 2+ years ago & still to this day they haven’t repaired it. A copy of my file was sent to me by a staff member of RAC & the things they had in their note was next level disgusting about our house & things that had nothing to do with the claim.

premiums by 40% and 70% (compared with premiums for last year) for the upcoming renewals in end of May 2026. I have good insurance history, with Suncorp Insurance and all my previous insurance providers, for more than 30 years. My last vehicle insurance claim was in the 2000s - total loss due to sudden torrential rain and flash flood on the street where I had parked my vehicle, and that was all. I have never claimed on home insurance. Even after the vehicle total loss, I had never had my premiums raised by that much, as Suncorp is going to, for many, many years. Only after having been with Suncorp Insurance for 2 years, I am already being treated as a customer being too loyal, and I am being robbed. Even worse, Suncorp Insurancr is so arrogant that it has not responded to my email complaint/protest about their greed. It is businesses like Suncorp Insurance that cause the inflation problem in Australia and the resultant non-stop interest rates rises by the Reserve Bank, that in turn cause so much pain to all Australians!

vulnerable, they do not care. They wont pay us enough to be able to put ourselves back into pre destruction state. They also refuse to pay for temporary accomodation while the house is unlivable and dangerous despite GIO destroying our property through their negligence and conduct, and then leaving us essentially homeless and without contents.

GIO are part of the Suncorp group which also includes AAMI, Suncorp and Shannons insurance amongst others. Please do your research very carefully if looking to insure with this group. They seem to spend more energy denying and delaying claims than doing what is noted in the PDS.

I cant say this enough times….GIO have destroyed our health, our property and our lives over many years and they do not care.

The Australian public need to be made more aware of how many claims are mishandled and swept under the carpet, how many complaints are made internally with insurers and how many of those are forced to go to AFCA or drop off. How many people just give up because they cant fight or don’t know how to fight an insurer. How many claimants have been tricked by insurers during claims and don't even know it, because they trusted the insurer and the assessors and the often corrupted insurer panel contractors who get most - if not all their work from insurers. The public need to start demanding via MPs a return to a government run home insurer so we have a choice to move away from the misconduct that is enabled within the overly greedy and non transparent private sector. The insurance premiums might also be better with a govt insurer as the annual salary might not be anything like what Suncorp CEO [Name Removed] took home last year - a whopping $6.3 million which includes a $2 million bonus. These types of undeserved salaries and bonuses are why victims of insurance are ABUSED by insurers. They will blame it on weather events and shareholders but who’s tracking the costs for what insurers waste on misconduct to worm their way out of legit claims? No one! WHO is tracking the unethical and criminal panel contractors and their shonky reports and repairs? No one - GIO goes silent when busted. Who is also tracking the health damage insurers cause during their claims misconduct? No one! Im aware of numerous people left homeless, in final stages of life, kids sleeping in tents for extensive periods in all types of weather and CEO’s being fully aware, many with severe mould illness, disabled and elderly people left abandoned, many having mental breakdowns - all because insurers refuse to behave during claims handling. This needs to stop.

We’ve had an extremely frustrating experience with RACQ Home Insurance over our storm-damage claim lodged in December 2024. For 11 months, RACQ has… Read more

consistently failed to communicate. We have spent countless hours on the phone trying in vain to speak with someone who understands our claim, and each time it’s a different person, forcing us to restart the story. Trades and contractors would often ghost us without notice, and when they did eventually attend, they came in the wrong order and were unable to complete their work. In particular RACQ's “make safe” measures for ceiling mould were woefully inadequate, consisting basically of some masking tape over a small triangular piece of tarp which fell down after 2 days, leaving our young children exposed to the health risks of uncontrolled mould for many months. The extensive delays had resulted in much more extensive structural damage to our property due to uncontrolled wood rot/mould and further water damage.

Two formal internal complaints to RACQ resulted in no meaningful action and further gaslighting. RACQ continues to delay to this day, now asking for a third leak detection test with no schedulable date as an excuse not to proceed, and bizarrely claim that irrelevant issues with lower window trims can somehow defy gravity and cause ceiling mould above them. We have had no choice but to escalate the matter to AFCA. We wouldn't wish our experience with RACQ on our worst enemy. Pls avoid RACQ at all costs.

Great value for money – I've been with this company since 2011, so only 2 years so far. I first heard about them by doing research on canstar and they were recommended and… Read more

had MUCH lower premiums than other companies. My first premium for both home AND contents was under $400!! How they do that, I'm not sure so I was a bit unsure at first and read the policy very carefully. It looks ok to me in comparison to others and for the cover we need. Each year I've done another evaluation and they still come out on top. It sounds like the other reviewers on this site who actually have cover with Australian Unity (Calliden) have good experiences with claims as well, so hopefully if that time comes for me I will be equally satisfied. I did have a very long phone conversation yesterday to discuss the policy in detail and was extremely impressed by the Calliden representative. She was very friendly, well informed and never made me feel rushed.

The only company that was close to comparison in price was Cominsure (now the top canstar company) but they have very bad customer reviews. The only downside I can see so far is that they only have 1 excess for home and contents (so can't be less for contents)- but on the good side, you only pay the one excess even if your claim involves both. Now I'm just trying to get the most accurate estimate of building, demolition and architect costs so I can be sure we have the right amount of cover. Value for money, inexpensive, good customer service Only 1 excess for both home and contents
